1. Brit shops are not something that we look out for or take notice of, so I have no idea if any exist locally. Similarly we don't know of any Brits driving back and forth. It's a quandary !
2. We normally have sliced roast gammon with poached eggs and champagne for Christmas Day breakfast. Unfortunately, this year we have no gammon to roast and don't seem to be able to find any in the supermarket butchery sections. Is a gammon for roasting not available in France or are we asking / looking for the wrong thing ?
3. Bolton has never been the same since the Pasty Shop closed down. I remember queueing for pasties at lunchtime having run like h*** from the College to try to get near the front. ( this was back in the late 60s )
4.
Papa C [8-)] Are I allowed into the mystery as I have no idea what is going on here [:-))]
Me too, I have no idea who ''Papa C'' is. Could the comment be '' cliquish ''
5. I most certainly will, but...........I'm not holding my breath in the hope of a quick result.
6. Our claim for the last two years has been submitted, acknowledged and we have been informed that it has been passed on to some sort of decision making section.
7. Interesting reasons and I can see the logic, but..... It just does not apply here in our part of Normandy.
8. Why do you have to pay the 23 Euros to your GP when you have given him your carte vitale ? We certainly don't. We never have and Mrs PD has to see the Quack at least every 3 months and has had to for years.
9. The cylinders I am describing are the 11(?) kg Actigas ones from garages / supermarket fuel stations.
10. What 'seal' is that John ? Our cylinders come with a valve and the only thing to be removed is a black plastic cap screwed onto the valve outlet, it's not sealed and is basically a dust cap / thread protector.
11. The site from which I got my figures is :-http://www.tradingeconomics.com/united-kingdom/exports.
12. Contrary to the 40% export figure quoted above by Quillan, the actual percentage export to EU countries is close to 25%. Germany (10 percent), France (7 percent), the Netherlands (6 percent) and Ireland (4.5 percent). Other exports to the rest of the world via Rotterdam and Antwerp are classed as exports to the EU because they enter an EU country before being sent on to non-EU destinations. The actual May 2015 figures are :- Exports total 43047.00 GBP Million Exports to EU 10904.00 GBP Million ( March 2015) This gives a figure of 25.33%
13. Hoddy wrote :- To be absolutely fair - the British government has given the French authorities £12m to help pay for the policing at Calais.'' According to the Calais Mayor, the UK has not spent a cent in helping Calais handle the problem. I guess £12 million doesn't count.
14. Chancer, as the OP I feel you should know that my car was bought in France, is registered in France, Is used primarily in France, is insured in France. It would be unusual if it were any different given that I live in France. I was questioning the insurance situation regarding my caravan ( which is also French registered ) and the very high rates that I have been quoted.
15. Yes, there are a large number of camping cars in France but equally there are a considerable number of French towed caravans. We have towed a caravan through Europe for many years and prefer it to having the restriction, on site, of a camping car.
16. We have, at present, our touring caravan insured via AXA who also do our car and house insurance. The caravan premium is quite a lot, bigger than the car premium by a considerable margin because, whilst the car attracts a 'no claims discount' the caravan does not. We have a feeling that we are being 'ripped off' but cannot quantify that feeling. I have 'heard' that a caravan is covered, whilst being towed, by the car insurance, is this true ?, can anyone confirm or deny this. If true then our substantial premium is, in effect, covering our van only whilst it is parked in the garage at our home and whilst on a camp site. We are members of the FFCC who offer caravan insurance at discounted rates but seem to demand that the car be covered by the same company. This is a problem because of the different start dates of each insurance period. Does anyone have any information or comments which may be of help ?
17. Rabbie wrote:- ''If we were all agreed on the correct solution the there would be no need for debate but as we differ in our views on this let's agree to discuss it without personal abuse which invariably leads to more heat than light.'' I totally agree Rabbie.
18. Betty wrote:- So, for my benefit if not anyone else's, what other key policy proposals of UKIP did its supporters find so attractive that they were swayed to vote for them? What do the UKIP intelligentsia know that us poor saps have overlooked? I suggest you read the summary of the election manifesto at the link below:- http://www.ukip.org/ukip_manifesto_summary
19. I certainly agree with the analogy. However ebaynut, you must be very careful, it's not PC these days to say stuff like that. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
20. Rabbie wrote:- ''I suspect the majority of those who voted UKIP did so because they thought Nigel Farage was correct in saying all our problems would be solved if the UK left the EU. No clear explanation has been given as to what the UK does after leaving the EU. Some have suggested something similar to the Norway arrangement but as the Norwegian foreign minister has said this would give the UK all the costs with no say in the rules - hardly a big step forward. If there had been a lot of tactical voting then I would have expected UKIP to have won more seats but as we have a secret ballot then who knows'' As I understand the tactical voting situation it was that UKIP supporters voted Tory in many places to ensure that Labour did not win in order to avoid a Labour + SNP National government. Therefore such tactical voting could never have led to an expectation of more UKIP seats, exactly the opposite in fact - as happened. Your suspicion Rabbie, that the majority of those who voted UKIP did so because they thought Nigel Farage was correct in saying all our problems would be solved if the UK left the EU is IMO misplaced. It is somewhat condescending and arrogant to assume that anyone who supports UKIP must be so very gullible and unthinking. As for no clear explanation of what the UK does 'if' it leaves the EU, well, think back to what the UK did before the EU, It had it's ups and downs, it's successes and failures, it's good times and bad times. Membership of the EU is not a panacea for all National ills. Those who support and wish for 'Brexit' do so because they believe that the UK can be a successful independent Sovereign Country, trading with others around the World, friends with most and ruled democratically by its own Government.
21. I would guess then that the answer to my original question is that UKIP voters are (supposed to be ) uneducated, have strongly held 'not nice' (ie not PC) opinions etc etc. All 4 million of them, plus the ones who tactically voted to avoid a Labour + SNP alliance. A somewhat arrogant assumption by someone.
22. I have just been catching up on the forum and came across this thread. someone posted '' My guess is that UKIP's primary appeal is to relatively unsophisticated voters whose voting behaviour is somewhat tribal.'' Could whoever please define 'unsophisticated' in the context of voters as to me, it sounds somewhat condescending and arrogant.
23. '' There is no easy solution to this problem - possibly no solution at all but I don't believe that repatriation is a viable option.'' Repatriation is not an acceptable solution ( why not ?) Opening the doors to everyone in the World who wants to come to UK / Europe is not an acceptable solution ( not enough space ) Housing the illegals in camps ( located where ???? ) would be considered to be 'concentrating' them and would not be an acceptable solution ( again why not ?) No solution is going to be totally acceptable to everyone but there really has to be action taken or, I fear, local violent action will be taken by those most affected. Not a good scenario at all.
