  1. Can anyone recommend an English-speaking cosmetic dermatologist in Paris?
  2. I know that for French inheritance/tax purposes, foreign real estate is miraculously exempt - but does this extend to cooperative apartments? My husband and I recently purchased cooperative shares in a building in New York; would that be considered real estate as far as the French are concerned?
  3. What are the alternatives - if any - to having a signature notarized (simple attestation), other than doing so at the consular section (where it takes three hours and costs a fortune)?
  4. I'm looking to sell my car, and was told that a typical practice is for the used car dealer to take it on a 3-month consignment. Is this common? There's no guarantee it will sell (though a minimum price is agreed upon), and if it doesn't, I will have lost 3 months of both the use of my car and the opportunity to sell it otherwise, with the dealer not assuming any risk that I can detect. Are there alternatives?
  5. Hi all - I've just been handed some excruciating news; I need 2 root canals, my private insurance is good for only a tiny fraction and the French Social Security not much better, not that I'm enrolled yet as my residency paperwork won't be processed for another couple of months. My dentist recommends someone who will charge upwards of 900 euro for each root canal, exclusive of crowns and heaven knows what else. Are there any options? Yikes
  6. Mine, too. We moved to Paris in November, neither of us working, my husband on a UN pension which I know to be taxable as income in France, but is there some sort of cutoff date for filing the previous tax year? That is, since we were late arrivals in 2005, do we need to file, and when and how? Sorry to be such an ignoramus...
  7. So we thought. They seemed almost too amateurish to be so, though!
  8. I had heard something about a modification to the law, but the latest I can find is the the one from 2002. Can anyone direct me to where I can find more current (in English, preferably) info? thanks a bunch
  9. We listed our car (not on ebay, that's next) on an online classified and got two very similar responses, full price or more offered, with us to pay the "international shipper." It seemed like a scam and we didn't pursue it, but perhaps we are being too skeptical? Anyway, the car's still for sale if anyone's interested!!
  10. Hi - my husband and I just bought an apartment in Paris. I don't think we went the tontine route, and I am pretty much at his mercy because I don't as of yet speak French. He has two grown children from a previous marriage, we all love each other but I'm concerned that I may be left unprotected. What about assets outside France?
