Correct me if I'm wrong, but a couple of years ago didn't the government put up the taxes on cigarettes, and the tabacs protested (complaining of reduced sales as a result of the price hike) so the government paid all the tabacs a lump sum payment to compensate. The idea behind the hike was to help pay the national health debt.

plants-et-jardins.com
I think you mean plantes-et-jardins...! [;)] The website is at www.plantes-et-jardins.fr
Yes sorry - it's this new version of the forum - I can't cut and paste a web address. (the .com bit was correct - .fr or .com both work)
About this vodka, I have decided that Ricard and water is about the best carb free drink you can have. Unless someone knows differently? Not that I drink of course. Just in case....
AND it all goes towards the water intake, doesn't it?

Yummeee! When some friends came to my birthday/New Years party, they bought me two whole mi-cuits with fois gras in the middle (best of both worlds [:D]) and insisted that they be kept to enjoy ourselves - anyone fancy a slice?

Other kids prgrammes I used to watch that haven't been mentioned so far are Mary, Mungo and Midge; The Herbs (or was it called The Herb Garden) and Crystal Tips and Alistair.

Hi all, Just half a pound down this week. I had eaten some baguette (with butter) and also had frites during the week - total lack of self control!! I'm now at 13st 3lb / 185 lb / 84k total loss 6.5 lb / 2.8k's. Weighed myself Saturday morning instead of the usual Sunday am as we had friends for dinner last night (very tasty they were too[6]) and the idea of weighing in after a few glasses of wine, fois gras, dauphinoise potatoes and pot au chocolat (the other bits of the meal were quite healthy) didn't seem like a good idea to me. I'm going to be really good this week - I WANT to lose 2 lb at least. I'm off to get dressed and get the spade out to dig over the potager, that should help [W]

From reading your other posts you have lived in France for some time now - or am I wrong, surely you should not still be on a UK health card. Apologies in advance if I am wrong.
I don't think you'll need butter! A local restaurant (Auberge du Moulin de la Sée) has taken to serving up the foie gras with fruit and all sorts of bits and pieces. Not a route to go down, in my opinion.
Agree, but your serving suggestion above (which is the way I usually serve it) is very nice with a type of chutney 'confit d'oignons' or a fig conserve. My local resto is having a 'soirée sur la thème de fois gras' soon - have booked our places and really looking forward to it, lots of tasters I hope!

My agrément is to look after 2 children at any one time. The max you can have (at any one time) is 3. You could of course have more children on your books but look after them at different times, for example if one of the parents only worked part-time. My french is not bad, I'm in my 4th year here (and 3rd log-in name - I've been around longer than my 'date joined' suggests) and upto Christmas had been going to advanced classes at GRETA in Riberac. There's still lots of vocab I don't know but my grammar is quite good! I often slip out a 'tu' to someone who I probably shouldn't and hope they either didn't notice or aren't offended [:$] Where abouts are you in North Dordogne? We may be fairly near each other - PM me if you don't want to broadcast it.

Hi tetley, I have registered as a childminder (assistante maternelle agréee) here having worked in childcare in the UK. It is fairly painless process, lots of forms to fill in including a doctors certificate, a few home visits/inspections and a day long meeting with other applicants and speakers from the various relevant departments. I would suggest that you go along to your Mairie and ask that you want to apply for the agrement to become an Assistant Maternelle and they will point you in the right direction. Once you have your agrement your name will be added to the list at the Mairie and you will, I'm sure, receive demands from parents looking for a Nou-Nou. I would warn you though that the pay is very low especially compared to UK pay (OH's 20 year old daughter earns a bomb compared to me!!). Here's the website with details of pay and agrementation etc (look at the menu down the left hand side of the page): www.assitante-maternelle.org
I would be very careful taking someone on to care for your children unless you can get very good references. There doesn't seem to be the vetting/police checks in France as in the UK.
The vetting of 'Assistante Maternelles Agréee' is very thorough (been there, done that). As Les Lauriers said, your local Mairie holds a list of these, just ask.

I agree with Ty, lichen (which also cover many of my trees in the Dordogne) will only grow in pure, unpolluted air. It does not do any harm to the trees. Personally I take it as a sign that I'm no longer breathing in 'bad' air (my asthma has been much improved since moving here). With regards to the greengage, it does sound very sick (without having seen how bad it is) I would be tempted to cut it right down to the ground and kill off the stump with a stump killing product or get in a stump-grinder.
It's unintelligible!
I was trying to be polite [;)]

It depends on where it's location is, but what about having it as a wild flower meadow, you can buy packs of seeds that contain a multitude of different specimens and only needs cutting down once a year.

It probably wasn't worded very well but I know what he means. MOH has bought commodities directly from the Bourse on Paris. But then he spends hours following the stock market and knows what he is doing (that's what early retirement does to you!)

Hi Laura, We brought ours with us having de-installed it from our last house (bought from John Lewis)! BUT, they are commonly available here, just visit any large Brico or Plomberie/Sanitaire store. They're called Adoucisseurs.

It's quite a long time ago now, but I seem to remember that we hand wrote an 'Attestation' with regards to our NCB. Attestations seem quite commonplace in France, we even did one for our application for chilldbenefit with regards to our income for a particular year.

Help for a poor little lad........

Hi Liz, I'll email you. -
We adopted a dog from the SPA. She's gorgeous, completely soppy and great with the kids - go for it. It costs about 100€ to adopt a dog, this covers the vets bill/vaccinations etc. You could also try Pheonix Refuge - they always have loads of dogs (check other threads for their phone number or do a Google)

Next year....

Oh Alexis, that is soooo disappointing for you - have you been making a real effort? If so double bugger!! The only reason I feel I have lost the weight is because I have virtually cut out all alcohol (total of 3 or 4 glasses since New Year!) and also my bread, pasta, potatoes intake has been reduced RIGHT down plus no biscuits, cakes etc., if I hadn't done that then I'm sure I would be still where I started. Bon chance for the coming week - stay focussed, you CAN do it! [{]
... and where are you Mr. Dog... location location, which département is that? It only seems five minutes ago we were talking about them coming down, they can't already be going back [:O] Edit : Sorry Dog, I have just seen further above that you are 450ft 24 near Perigueux.
Mr Dog, Go into your profile and update your location there, then we can see each time you post where you are [;)] It's great news that Spring is around the corner. It always seems to us that 1st March and it is like someone flicks a switch - yipee. Will watch out for the Grues - I love seeing the first northerly flight, I get very excited about it [:D] -
Weighed in this morning. It's getting a bit predictable: another 1 lb lost (6 lb in total or 2.7 kilos in new money - nearly 11 packets of butter!!). At least it's in the right direction but it's slow - I'd rather be losing two pounds a week otherwise my target seems a long way off. Just checked my BMI - argh still 'obese' by 0.3 points [:'(] Next week then to get to 'overweight'. Weight now 84.1k / 185.5 lb / 13st 3 lb 5 oz
