  1. [quote user="Eslier"]Not only has the weather turned but today is the last "red day" for Tempo electricity users. Half price electricity after today until the autumn ! Time to open up the pool. [/quote] And all the white days are used up now too. So that's exactly what we're doing today! We've removed the abri and are jet washing it and the patio around the pool and at 6am tomorrow the pumps will go on!! [:D]  [:D]  [:D]  [:D]  [:D]
  2. I get manure from the stables and yes it is a little bit too fresh, but I put it in the compost bin to mix with the kitchen and garden waste.  Auchan have bags of lovely well composted (black) horse manure for €3.65 though I can't remember the volume 10k/25k - I'm not sure, I'll have a look when I next go. Garden centres tend to be very expensive, some Brico sheds may stock sacks of it cheaper then the GCs.
  3. [quote user="hastobe"]Where are you Suze?  The house we are buying is about 25km NE of Perigueux and we wish we were there - instead of enduring the miserably cold British weather - freezing and black ice this morning [:(] [/quote] Lisle
  4. 40 (she says quietly!). I am talking about infants school though.
  5. What a georgeous day! Clear blue skies, 17 in the shade (over 25 in the sun) [H] and I've just seen the first lizard of the year scooting across the drive.  I've now seen loads of flights of Grues go over. The leaf buds on the trees are getting fat.  Spring is here [:D] though not officially until next Monday. What signs of Spring have you seen?
  6. [quote user="fcr"]I hate milk anyway never got over the warm sickly sunbaked stuff at school. ugh Fi [/quote] Me too!  I was the only one in the class to have the orange juice in the little milk bottles at break time!
  7. My daughter goes horseriding.  She goes to the stables at 9am and I pick her up at 6pm (or whatever times I want, any day of the year!) She takes a picnic or eats with them (for €7.50) and it costs €12 which I pay for in blocks of 10, her card is marked each time she goes.
  8. It usually comes in a bottle/carton with a green lid. I have found though that there are a couple of (even large) supermarkets that do not stock it. I use it all the time as I find the blue topped supposedly semi-skimmed far too creamy especially in tea, though I do like it in the occassional cup of coffee.
  9. My kids are just the right age for them, 8 & 11, so going by all your recommendations, I've been on to eBay and have bought a few relevant ones - can't wait for them to arrive!
  10. For us, the important part of having a water softener is the comfort factor when showering/hairwashing, not having scaled-up baths, shower doors, tap fittings. Having a 'clean' kettle, not damaging expensive appliances,  being able to use a lot less soap/detergents etc. Drinking the stuff didn't even come into the equation, apart from filling the kettle we buy bottled water for drinking neat or with syrops .
  11. Phew [:|] I really thought I may have put on weight again this week.  But no, I am exactly the same as I was last week.  Still, very disappointing that I haven't broken that stone-barrier but hey, what did I expect when I've been eating chocolate (no headaches[;)]) and biscuits all week! 12. We have a softener installed.  The salt we buy for it clearly states on the packaging that the water produced is for human consumption.  We do not have a separate non-softened water tap and use the water for all alimentation, even the goldfish are happy with it! We have been using a softener with this set up for the best part of 20 years now (both in the UK and here in France - always seem to live in a hard water area!) and we have no problems with it what-so-ever. For some 'concrete' [8-)] answers: http://www.lenntech.com/water-softener-FAQ.htm#5 5.2 Is softened water safe to drink? Softened water still contains all the natural minerals that we need. It is only deprived off its calcium and magnesium contents, and some sodium is added during the softening process. That is why in most cases, softened water is perfectly safe to drink. It is advisable that softened water contains only up to 300mg/L of sodium. In areas with very high hardness the softened water must not be used for the preparation of baby-milk, due to the high sodium contant after the softening process has been carried out. For a different point of view: http://www.dwi.gov.uk/pubs/hardness/index.htm#6 But if you do install a water softener you should make sure that you have a supply of unsoftened water for drinking and cooking. This is because: there is evidence of less heart disease in hard water areas than in soft water areas, although not all studies find this link. If something in hard water protects against heart disease, water softeners might remove this protection along with the hardnessmany water softeners work by replacing the hardness with sodium. Too much sodium can be a problem for premature babies because their kidneys are not good at filtering it out of the blood, and for people who are on a low sodium (low salt) diet  [probably agree not to use softened water for baby's bottles] soft water may release lead from any lead pipes downstream from the softener [if you have lead pipes in your house] a softener which has not been properly looked after may release germs into the water. But this seems to be rather ambiguous in parts.
  13. Around here the general idea (I won't say 'rule') is that if you have already seen the person during the day and wished them a 'bonjour' then you can say 'bonsoir' if it is mid-afternoon + (or indeed say 're-bonjour' which is quite popular). If it is the first time you have seen them, and it is after mid-afternoon, then either/either would do - but it really doesn't matter, though someone did greet me with a 'bonsoir' one morning and got rather embarassed at their gaffe. 'Bonne journée/bonne soirée/fin d'apres midi' is usually a departing  wish.
  14. The effigy is called 'Pettascou' (I don't think I've got the spelling correct though!) . Many towns and villages will be having a carnaval around the time of the first day of Spring, culminating in him being burned.  At our carnaval the children often do a speech before telling him all the bad things that have happened over the winter. Everyone dresses up in fancy dress, there are games, face painting, horse-drawn caleche rides, and little tractor train for les petites, lots of gouters and wine. We have confetti battles, often with cans of silly string  as well and balloon releases.  It's always a really good afternoon.
  15. Thanks, but I was just now thinking of changing him for something else, I'm a bit bored with him now and his hips must be aching like mad!
  16. I don't 'eject' them from our house, I think they're quite cute.  Do they cause any sort of damage where you wouldn't want them in the home?
  17. On TF1's news this morning there was an item on equality in Government. They showed a league table of European countries with the % of women within Government.  The UK was fairly high up the table with 35% (or was it 37?) but France was way down the bottom of the table with a poor 13%.  There's clearly a large bit of inequality going on there!
  18. [quote user="Debra"]Do they not have any adult education in France, then? [/quote] Yes, they do have adult education.  It comes under the banner GRETA and covers many subjects.  [url=http://www.education.gouv.fr/fp/greta.htm]This[/url] is the website with all the information.
  19. I heard an 'ad' on the radio yesterday saying that the tax forms will not be available until May.
  20. I suppose it depends on the restaurant and on how polite the staff are, but the ones we go to (in the SW) often say it after each course, so I don't think it's a northern thing..
  21. Thanks, that's very useful as my son will be in 5e next year.  He was very pleased when I told him that he can do some maths during the Grand Vacances!!
  22. Oh nooooo!! the first time since the New Year that I have put weight ON! I've gained the pound that I lost last week [:'(] During the week I have felt really cold and had a bit of a cold - I've binged out on some biscuits, buttered toast and Marmite, I've had three croissants, though no alcohol [A] and I suppose I can blame half of the pound on being PM [6] ! 23. [quote user="Suninfrance"]Suze - I like the link you've pasted.  I tried to do it myself, but it didn't work.  Can you give me any clues as to how I can get my own "ticker" onto the site?[/quote] It took a bit of working out myself!  When you have finished making your ticker it gives you 4 web addresses options for it.  One of them works - I think it was the one 'BB code' - highlight the full address then do control 'c' then on your post here do control 'v' and it will come up when you preview your post.
