  1. When we moved over to our place in the Creuse last June we bought an Orange pay as you go. Since then we've found it a pain in the bum having to use up any credit left on the card before it expired or lose the money. As we only use the phone for emergencies, breakdowns etc., we bought an Orange payg sim card on E-Bay for £2 and ask our daughter in the UK to top it up for us in Tescos every now and then. We no longer have to worry about time limits on the cards. We had to unlock the phone but there are several internet sites you can log onto for this. I think it cost about £4.50. As long as we make at least one call every 6 months the sim remains live.

  2. OK understood. I've just done a search and come across a post which indicates I should have asked for a Petite Licence for Table d'Hote which includes group 1 & 2 drinks but as we will only be offering evening meals occasionally, therefore not full blown table d'hote, I didn't think it necessary. Looks like I will have to change it to be on the safe side.

  3. We received our drinks licence from the douanne in Gueret in the post this morning but I'm not sure we've got the right one. I asked for a petite licence for chambre d'hote and they've given me a "Category 1" licence which according to the blurb on the back entitles me to serve "boissons sans alcool" from the premier groupe, but doesn't say what the premier groupe includes. This is okay for breakfast but if we want to do the occasional evening meal, say Sunday and Monday when local restaurants are closed, and we include wine with the price of the meal, is this the correct licence category? The only other one I can see on the document is a "Petite Licence" under the Restaurant section which entitles the holder to sell drinks but only with a meal.

Have we got the right one? Can someone please advise as we don't want to get off on the wrong foot.

    Many thanks

  4. Some time ago, just before we moved over to our new home in La Creuse, We were in touch with someone about taking a kitten or two. Unfortunately I've lost their details in the move. We decided to leave it until after Xmas and so if anyone has or knows of some kittens or cats available we can offer a very good home.

  5. Yes it is easy-peasy, at least it was in our part of France. Would have taken about 5 minutes but had to make a return visit as I had forgotten our marriage certificate. The person at the desk even had a large English/French dictionary which she used to aid our conversation. We were given a temporary number there and then and received our Carte Vitales within a couple of weeks.

I must say, I've found most "official" things fairly easy since moving over permanently, such as health registration, car registration, insurance, solving problems with taxe fonciere and habitation, first-time visit to the dentist etc etc. Perhaps we've just been lucky but I think it helps to do a bit of research first and make sure, as the other reply says, you have all the documents you think you might need plus all the ones you think you won't need!

However, having said all that, still got to cope with the tax return Ah well, all part of the learning curve I suppose...
