  1. It certainly is against all Masonic belief and etiquette to use membership for personal gain, although as with most organised bodies there is a small fringe of brothers who take brotherly love to the limit, In my Masonic career I have had many rewarding experiences , one thing I have never come across is a lady Mason as the Grand lodge does not recognise women as being eligable , I think that COCO must be referring to the Lady Charoptomists ( think thats how you spell it ) which is an organisation set up by some ladies many years ago , but most certainly is not allied to or in any other way part of The grand lodge of England . Sorry got on a soap box for a minute Billy10
  2. Thanks Sunday Driver,                                  Wish I did qualify for wealth tax !!! All in its not so bad for the high standard of treatment that is available , I think its the old parody of " you only get out what you put in " which I am quite happy to do   Regards   Billy10  soon to be billy dix
  3. Just thought I would put my toe in the water also , the way I understand it is , for instance I am going to take up residence in France in Mid january , so my E 106 will cover me in the health system for two years ( as I will only be 60 years old and retired early) and I will have to provide a top up insurance for this two years if I want an almost 100 percent repayment of my medical expenses. After the two years I will have to pay a percentage of my un earned income  ( I think 11 percent) towards the Health system as well as providing myself with a top up insurance. All this happens irrespective of whether I am an early retiree , retired thro ill health etc etc as I understand it , it is compulsory whatever the circumstances ( aprat from a few special cases).I understand that un earned income in  the main is interest off investments , bank accounts etc but excludes Capitol ( apart from the interest portion of it) Once I am 65 I believe it gets a bit easier ( not sure how much easier ) Is this a reasonable synopsis of the system ???
  4. I am thinking about putting a conservatory on the back of the house , nothing too grand just an ordinary victorian style 3.5 metres x say 5 or 6 metres , well that was the plan until I started to look at the prices in France for said item , first of all I thought he was having a laugh but as I looked at more and more conservatories in France I realised they were serious, so I am thinking of reverting to plan  "b" which is buy one in the UK and van it over for probably a third of the price , Has anyone else had any experience of doing this for instance are there any duties or tax's involved ???
  5. Received ours this week , a bit up on last year but not so bad.(dept 36) Billy10
  6. how very sad for you Diane, you must be feeling very low at the moment, my sympathies are with you.
  7. It is my understanding that any unearned income i.e mainly interest is taxed at 11 percent for the social fund , with no allowances ,it starts at the first Euro , is this also the case when one reach's the age of official retirement 65 or are you exempt, because It could be possible to also class OAP as unearned income ( cheek) worked 50 years to accumulate it, Any views or advice ??????
  8. Thanks Andrew, see what you mean, I will empty it to 50 cm to all that I want to
  9. When I have the pool "winterised " they pump out about 2 feet depth of water and put the covers on ( pool is 10 metres x 4.5 metres ) when I asked why they dont drain it I was told that you should never drain a pool completely because of the " forces in the ground" acting on the sides of the pool, anyone know if this is correct or just a bit pool mystique, I wanted to empty it so I could give it a really good clean on the sides , take out the fittings and clean them etc etc , but now I am not so sure ???
  10. Hi Nick, Thanks for that , but surely I will not be expected to pay 11% tax on my capital as this has already been taxed as earned income in the UK,
  11. Sorry if this is an old chestnut but I am a bit concerned , imagine a situation retiring early at sixty and moving permanently to our house in France , will declare permanancy early January and join CPAM system etc and get full two years, we are a  married couple and our income will be made up of a pension from a UK goverment source, Capital, and interest off a UK online account, the total taxable (taking out capital) is only a little over our joint tax allowance so we will pay little tax ( i will have all incoming paid gross and pay whatever the amount is as French tax, however what social charges are we in for ???? and what are the allowances for a married couple before one starts to pay.????
  12. Hope this is the right forum, here goes   I will be moving to France permanently end of August 2007, I was going to get a French registered left hand drive vehicle delivered to my address in thr UK in a few months time , however all of a sudden I thought about French vehicles not having any road Tax ( would i have to tax it for 6 months use in the UK as I would be using it until I move over , and would the authorities allow me to do it ) Also does anyone know if UK insurance companies insure foreign registered vehicles?? The reason I want to do this is that I have found a supplier in the UK that will take my UK car in part ex for a new French car, he orders direct from the maker and registers it and delivers it to me in UK, its a reasonable deal , but most of all it saves such a lot of hassle in selling vehicles etc. Anyone found in a simmilar situation ?????
  13. Hi Andrew,                   Although I said I would not be ready for a heat pump until next year (finances permitting) have you any info on what size heat pump I would need for my pool 9.5 metres length by 4.2 metres width i.e 55 cu metres of water, also does the pool pump have to run all the time that the heat pump is active ??? and when a heat pump is rated at 14 kw or so does that mean that when you run it , it takes 14 kw of power equivelant to running 14 bars of a electric fire or am I totally missing plot on how these things run ????  Everyone tells me they are very economical but no one really knows any guidance figures on running costs.    Regards Billy10  (return address  [email protected])
  14. I transfer minimum amounts of 5000 pounds from my Natwest account straight to HIFX where I get a spot rate better than the bank rate and a free transfer to Britline, seems to have worked fine for keeping my French bank account well in the black
  15. I am thinking of fitting a heat pump in my pool for next year , at a cost of about 2500 pounds , does anyone have any experience , i.e do they actually work , are they expensive to run, are they easy to fit etc. My pool is 10 metres long and 4.5 metres wide so the pump I have identified says in the technical spec that it will handle the volume no problem , but is it really a cheap alternative to other forms of heating and if so what sort of results can one expect , my house isin the very south of dept 36 so we get some fairly good weather .
  16. Just seen Leslauriers reply , but that only applies if you have taxable income above the French tax allowances , for instance it is my understanding that if you calculate all of your interest plus any other income you may have coming in from UK , divide it by two if you are married , counts wholly if you are not married and provided it is not above your allowance then you will not pay tax, you will pay tax on a sliding scale for anything above the allowance starting at 6 percent. If you have moved totally to France then I believe that you are entitled to 2 years in the French health system provided you register as resident on or shortly after the first Sunday in January and all you will need is a top up insurance which are widely available and are a matter of choice as to what level you want. This will enable you to regain approx 70 percent cost back from goverment plus remainder back from your insurance. For a lot of Brits this all works out well as most people live on interest supplimented with Capital (capitol although you must declare the capital the only part that is taxable is the interest and then only if it is above your allowance, this system is great for people who have retired early and are not yet in possession of a UK pension, of course after your two years it all changes and then you are in for social charges and 8 percent of your taxable income , however with careful planning this can be catered for to a minimum requirement. It all depends on your available funds and how much of it is disposable and taxable It is also my understanding that UK Government pensions are still allowed to be taxed in the UK , however , having looked at my own situation for me it is better to declare it in France and pay tax on it in France as I would pay less than I would in the UK.  The whole thing is not rocket science if you get on the net and find out what your allowances are and calculate your own situation on the premise that everything above your allowace is taxable on the sliding scale as set out by French government. If anyone on Forum knows different please let me know as I have spent a lot of time researching the financial situation and would appreciate any alternative advice     .
  17. Could'nt agree more old boy ,by the way Pun is my mower fixed yet !!!
  18. Thanks Paul . Unfortunately I am not in France now until September , but when I go over I will take a close look at the regulator on the bottle and see what it says , The bottle is located only 1 metre from the hob , so the 12mm pipe should be OK , Do you need the other valve if only the hob is using propane ??? If so I presume I could get one at Brico or somewhere similar and just fit it in line . Regards   Billy10
  19. Hi Guys ,                Another poser from billy10, I have a feeling gluestick will know somethingabout this, here goes, my hob at the house in dept 36 is currently run from a butane (blue)bottle , it has one valve that screws directly into the top . It burns with a blue flame at the bottom but goes to an orange flame at the top and consequently makes the pots very sooty, I am told it is OK.  However my hob is also jetted so it will burn propane which I am told will burn hotter and will not soot up the pots , but a frien d who has recently had propane installed says that he has two valves , one on top of cylinder and another one in line  and maintains it is part of the European directive to have these two valves , anyone know anything about it and what do I have to do to cajhange over to Propane (red bottle) gas, to be within the law Thanks all Billy10 Incidentally gluestick , I managed to get a registered installer to do my central heating for the price I wanted which in the end turned out at 5000 euros lower than the two quotes I got, I think it is down to " brit adjustment" just goes to show .
  20. Hi Evie The answer in short is yes they can , provided when the overpayment is recognised they eventually pay you back, eventually in France of course means "whenever". As I said previously Notaires are practically untouchable , however in the main honest and straight down the line, you have to put it down to experience  Regards Billly10,
  21. Hi Hacker                   My experience of notaires in France are that they are almost untouchable and generally they are correct and absolute right down the line, for instance when I purchased a house in France some two years ago I paid all my fees, etc etc and we all walked away happy, two months later I had a cheque from my Notaire for 1500 Euros as he explained that expenses were not as much as calculated originally. I f a genuine mistake has been made by your Notaires I think you will find that there is not much you can do about it , the onus is on you to query any amount you pay particularly if the amount is less than you agreed.Sorry to be a party pooper but if you agree to pay x amount , then that is what you will end up paying
  22. Pun , is that you Danny or should I say Monsuer Chamois Leather Billy10

    Diabetics

I am a type two diabetic and control my diabetis by diet, I do have to take other medication to keep my cholesterol and blood pressure down which in turn helps my diabetis control, will I be eligable to get any medication I need free of charge or does that only apply to type one isulin dependant diabetics. I intend to move to France shortly and I will be 3 months short of 60 years old when I go.
  24. After some astranomical quotes for oil fired central heating I have decided to install my own system, I am an engineer and so is my brother who will help me, is there anything we should know , for instance do we have to get any form of certification on the completed installation and if so how do we go about it,(bit concerned about house insurance being affected etc) I will buy the boiler and the bits in the UK because they are cheaper through our trade account, anyone out there on the forum know anything about it ??? Billy 10
  25. Still trying to decide what heating system to have istalled , thinking about solar so maybe in the winter heat the radiators and in  the summer heat the pool, has anyone had any experience, I understand that there are grants available because it is a renewable source for french residents, any ideas of cost etc ???   Cheers Billy10
