What I cant get my head around is -yes, before it went I saved on a thumb drive all my word 2007 documents then deleated all documents and emptied  bin on the laptop.

Now because Office Word 2007 programme has gone, (and all other software like photo suite -sigh!) will it still open my saved documents of word on my thumb drive.?
You could download 'OpenOffice Suite' http://www.openoffice.org, its better than Word and is free forever.....just set the default 'save' to .doc and you can continue to create files that Word will open.

  2. Ah! the price of business !!

but to be serious, I have a colleague at the Conseul General in Charente Maritime, and from my conversations with her, the authorities are trying to extract a few sheckels from where ever they can, the gite business, more especially the expat run businesses who have been getting away with not paying their share, are now a definite target.. This conversation evolved from our discussion of a mutual friends 30 weeks booked already for 2009...

Do you wish to edit your comment to say "If they are in gaine bent at more than 45 degrees" then ?

I still completely disagree with such a sweeping statement though [;-)]
True,

however, I was speaking generally, as I said, the OP might have an ideal installation to allow him to do it, but frequently its not possible,,,

lets wait and see how the OP resolves it......

I still have a couple of decent hats to eat :)

What are you talking about ?

Why on earth (sic) wouldn't you be able to thread a 'tire fil' and subsequently draw a new core through a gain of 20mm dia or larger with only two 1.5 or 2.5mm cables in it ?

    With respect, balderdash !

A 'tire fil' is at least twice the diameter of most normal domestic cable cores and I have often threaded one to a length of several meters and if it goes through the gaine why wouldn't it happily and safely draw in a new wire attached to it. It's the whole point of gaine and one of the few good things I can find to say about French electrics.
It always amazes me that people who have a bit of DIY electric experience like to dispute the facts from those who do it for a living !

First of all lighting circuit gaine is 16 mm, and if there are any bends in it more than about 45 degrees, ' no chance', you have obviously never tried pulling wires round a 90 degree bend, which is not uncommon here, since often gaine runs round corners, between the courses of stone etc.

Thats not say, the OP doesnt have the perfect installation that would allow him to do as you say :)

If the wires have actually been run in modern gaine it is likely the earth maybe lurking there somewhere, just inside the ceiling, since, generally you would always pull 3 wires to a light fitting, just in case a metal fitting is used.

If they are in gaine, but only the two wires, it will be virtually impossible to pull an earth through it.
One should never try to pull in another wire with existing wires already in situe, as it just burns the insulation off of the existing wires. If the gaine that feeds the light goes to a local junction box that you can locate, then it is normal practice to pull out the existing two wires ( attach a dra wire first !), and then pull in three new wires ( phase neutral and earth).
I didnt suggest pulling a single earth?

If the junction box is a few feet away ( unlikely ) and in a straight line from the fitting ( unlikely ) its still more than unlikely you can pull the new wires thru even with a draw wire which you will find difficult to pull thru in the first place !

  7. It is enough to say that you swept it!

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I have heard this so often, and certainly my insurer, Macif, do not require it.

When we first arrived and were renting, the agent made us do it, but thats french estate agents for you ( as%^&**'s, but in any event its only 50 euro's, so what ever makes you sleep comfortably :)

  8. Hi Jr

There is no requirement to pay for chimney sweeping, in general terms, if your insured with some oddball insurer that does require it, then I suggest you change insurer :)

As to the brush, you state correctly, a metal and a nylon one,,

If the house is old and the flue has been installed into an existing chimney breast, then I would guess the chances of it being circular all the way to the top are remote, in this case a nylon brush is the best option, it can be easily cut down to allow easy passage from top to bottom.

On balance I dont see the neccesity for a metal one in any event, prior to sweeping you should burn the cleaning blocks to loosen the debris inside the flue liner.

  9.
Your chimney needs to be swept at least once a year (if in use) by a legal sweep if you are to fulfil the conditions of your house and fire insurance policy.
You know, I knew you were going to say that ?

    its not true,,,,,,,

  10. If there is a security update then yes it is essential.

Since IE8 is a beta version, the update may improve some elements.

If I were you and need to have IE, I would go back to IE7,,,,, beta versions of any programs are really to allow software savvy people the chance to use it , find the bugs and provide feedback so improvements and fixes can be made.

  11. Hi

    interesting thread.....

    2 questions,

it is still unclear if there were two men or just one, since you reference ' when they arrived' ?

What would you have done if he had quoted the same price in advance, bearing in mind this was an emergency situation for you, and your number one priority was to have the leak fixed,,,,,just curious as to whether you would have agreed ?

Robert's fluffed it in his attempt to prompt Obama, after Obama missed the oath, correctly read by Roberts the first time.

  15.
I agree - but what point were you making originally?  Perhaps the issue of verbal fluency, in which case should we ridicule the new president for having to retake the oath of office after understandably fluffing the first attempt?  Can you point me to a source that strongly correlates verbal fluency with overall intelligence?

    Mr Cat
Given the nature of the event, it was understandable nervousness, just by the way, he had to take the oath again today because of the mistake.

GWB however had no excuse, after inflicting 8 years of misery on this world, with grave consequences still to come, and throughout his term in office, regularly being unable to string a few simple sentences together, and pushing the world into the mess we now find ourselves in, is a good enough indication of the mans intelligence.

  16.

At least he's educated, unlike previous Presidents.

Although I fear he will have to do as he's told,  no new broom here! Mind you he surely can't do any worse than GWB.
So who was 'uneducated'?
Solely being in attendance at  Harvard, Yale etc does not an educated man produce, university produces more of lifes failures than anything else, not forgetting these days many attend just to put off the inevitable move into the real world !
