1.
My God, I hope not too many French people get to read this garbage.
No wonder some of them don't think much of us.......[:(]
How sanctimonious can you get? Have you ever actually spoken to a French person? My English students (intelligent, professional French people) really enjoy this sort of stuff - yes, it is garbage, but they think it is funny, they like understanding what sort of 'stereotype' they have in the eyes of other nationalities, they enjoy telling me what they think of the Brits, it is just a bit of fun. So just get over yourselves, stop being so policitally correct, and perhaps try getting to know a few real French people.[:)]

  2. As long as your gite business earns less that the microbic plafond of 76,300€ you do not have to register with the ch de com. There is no texte that says that you do, provided that you are just doing 'locations meublés' and do not offer any ancillary services such as meals. You can get a SIRET by registering with the hotel d'impôts. However, bear in mind that if you have no other income in France you may not get health cover now either unless you register with the Ch de Com (if the CMU is no longer available to immigrants for the first 5 years).
  3. I have an IKEA sprung mattress and it is soooo comfortable. 229€ is not much to spend on a mattress (assuming it is a double?) compared to some other shops. If you are going into the hospitality business you should at least make sure your guests are comfortable.
  4. I've been replacing mattresses in the gites recently and was told by the people in the shop that foam or latex mattresses are better with the sommiers that most French beds have, that is why there are fewer spring mattresses available. The latex mattresses are quite expensive, similar to the spring, and I went for these. I would not buy really cheap mattresses for any of the beds, I wouldn't provide anything that I wouldn't be happy sleeping on myself.

Catherine2, do the outof eden protectors have a little give in them to fit the extra 5cms of a French double mattress? And has anyone found any genuinely impermeable mattress covers in France? I have discovered that the ones I bought from Carrefour are not[:@]

  5. If you actually read the texte, it says that to be considered a loueur professional you must be registered at the chambre of commerce. It doesn't say that you have to register when your income is equal or more than 23,000€. You should register if B&B or gites are your principal income, but there is no official texte stating this obligation and it isn't widely enforced by the authorities either. However, due to the proposed changes in healthcover you may have to register to get state healthcare in future as CMU may no longer be available.
  6. I didn't know about it and don't do it. I have no problem with providing the detail of the person who does the booking (except for perhaps asking their age/DOB) but with large groups it will impossible to get the info and a real pain in the neck for the person booking, especially if they are only staying for a weekend.

It was an interesting document, I was struck by this part
II. CONDITIONS DE FONCTIONNEMENT

      1. A. Information du locataire

Does this mean that guests who arrive at a gite and find that it doesn't conform to the advertising on the website and is in fact a real coalhole can now report this to the gendarmes?

  7.

I've used FF for a long time, what on earth is the "Remove All Formatting" button? I can't find anything like that on my screen.
ditto
The RAF button is the little rectangle next to the 'create link' one. Unless I quote something in the reply, the my cursor won't go into the reply box unless I click on this button. I've cleared all my history on FF and it is working now with this forum, but I've always had and still have to click on the RAF button when I reply without quoting. It isn't a problem for me, it must be something in my settings if no-one else using FF has the problem.

Chains only snap because they are badly maintained...for which read, lack of lubricant. I have just returned from a place in Normandy (with 12 other members of my family) that had 6 bikes, all were in a terrible state of repair. I oiled the chains, put air in the tyres, adjusted the seats and away we went, most of them had a little use over the week but as a paying guest, I expected the bikes to be fit for purpose on my arrival...it'd be like a gite owner expecting me to clean a dirty pool, oh and could you just rewire that barn while you're at it.

I cannot see a problem at all in getting a few differing size VTTs from say Decathlon, £70 each new, if looked after they will last a few seasons, a list of do and don'ts together with the rest of the house rules etc
I agree that the tyres should should be inflated (and not have punctures) and the chains oiled, but I think seat adjustment depends on the person using the bike so it isn't the gite owners job to do this. I check all my bikes at the beginning of the season and get them fixed where necessary and make sure any punctures are fixed if they occur during the season.

  9. I never used to have any problems and I've got the lates version - I've always had to click on the 'Remove All Formatting' button but I can't click on that icon now, nothing happens. It's probably something in my set up, but using IE7 I can post without removing the formatting.
  10. Until recently I could click on an url in an email in Outlook and it would take me direct to the webpage. Now if I click on a url I just get a search box asking me to find the internet browser file. I use Firefox as my default browser and have tried de-installing and reinstalling it without success. I can't think of anything I've changed in my Outlook settings, I use AVG anti virus. It isn't a huge problem as I can copy and paste the url, but if anyone has any ideas of what I could try I'd be grateful to hear them.

  11. Bear in mind that a listing site that works for one gite owner won't necessarily work for another. Frenchconnections was useless for me after they changed their site a few years ago, there are others around now which work better for me, but I still have to review all of them on an annual basis. Do a search on Google using the keywords that you think people will use to find your gite and see which sites come at the top of the list.

  12. Well, if you have 3 or more children, the CAF benefits are quite good. But what percentage of the population have a morgage and/or new car? Granted I live in a rural area, but most people who live around me have neither, they live in rented accommodation and have very old cars. Or rented accommodation and a new car. But not a morgage and a new car.
Is anyone having any problems with Googlemail via outlook with Orange as the ISP, or is it just me? Googlemail uses the SMTP port 465, so I don't think it can be related to the port 25 being closed. I haven't been able to send my gmail e mails via Outlook since last night.
Are you still having trouble sending gmail via Outlook?  If not, did Orange solve the problem or did you find a fix?
It's OK now - I've had the problem before with outgoing gmails in Outlook, but it only lasted a couple of hours at most, not 24 hours. I think the problem was with Gmail, not Orange.

  14.
Empty all bins into binliners and put binliners out for collection. Toilets are clean, personal rubbish such as newspapers, magazines etc are packed or thrown away, curtains opened, windows opened for fresh air, cutlery and plates washed or dishwasher loaded and running, outside areas tidied and anything used put back where i found it. Beds stripped and sheets piled for collection.  All told less tahn an hour of effort.  If you want it gutting, you need to do that yourself...im on holiday :-))
That's exactly what I would like all my guests to do, I wouldn't expect anymore than that. Most do.

  15.
I still like it, but I  admit we all have different tastes..

propose something you like then .. [:P]
OK Frenchie (I can't believe I'm doing this)

for today, it is corny, but it reminds me of all the holidays I took in France when I was young - of course the sun always shone then, but now I live here it doesn't [Www]
