  1. We found a snake curled up around our water stopcock in the garden - its down a nice deep hole so safe and cosy. It was black with yellow rings, about a finger in diameter and from what we could estimate about 40 - 50 cms long. A friend in UK who knows a lot about these things said it sounded like a King snake and the photos online would back this up. However, these only seem to be found in the USA. Can I assume therefore that this has escaped from someone's collection or perhaps its a different type of snake. Can anyone help and advise especially if dangerous. Don't think my husband will be turning the water off again anytime in the near future in any case! Thank you - think I posted original message in wrong section, sorry

  3. Thanks for your responses. Have spoken to our notaire and his reply is that there must be no payment of a rent, in money or in work done on any other part of your property – this is to avoid them having a lease contract (bail agricole). If there is no lease contract you will be able to ask him to stop using the property at any moment – no notice is required. For more security you could use a letter in which he recognizes that he doesn’t have a lease contract but only a "commodat ou prêt à usage" contract. This is something that can be drafted up yourself and is signed by both parties. You can either renew it every year or as the notaire says, use of your land can be stopped at any time.
  4. We have a large field attached to our garden and a British friend has asked if he can cut it and bale it up each year and take away for his animals. Obviously this is helpful to us and no money is going to exchange hands. Does anyone know if I need to get anything in writing before agreeing to this arrangement and if so what. Although obviously I trust my friend I realise its always best to think these things through should the friendship go belly up in the future! We may also wish to annexe parts of the field to our garden once we are ready to extend flower beds/lawns etc - which would obviously make the field smaller. Thank you
  5. Thanks all for your excellent suggestions and comments - we needn't have worried about the weather, it was blasting hot the whole time we were there and the day we flew back from Carcassonne it was 34 degrees and bright blue sky. Stansted is drizzly, cloudy and 11 degrees so back to normality for us. Whilst posting -although we have visited the Monday market at Mirepoix many times, can anyone recommend (or otherwise) the Thursday farmers market. Is it worth a visit for a young family with a small child? Bit of a drive for them from their rental property so just wanted to check. Thanks again all.
  6. Thank you so much John, never knew this place existed, must have driven past it a dozen times. Will definitely be visiting.
  7. Haha, might well do that! Have visited Nebias, agree, its a very nice village.
  8. Does anyone have any recommendations for things to do when its raining around the Quillan area, within about 30 miles or so? Preferably not the cinema. Thank you
  9. Will do, thanks. Has anyone visited this enterprise - would like to know if its worth a drive over? Thank you
  10. Hi there, has anyone visited this enterprise. Quite a bit of information on the internet but the website link doesn't work so am wondering if it is still open. Thank you
  11. Hi Chancer, yes you're right, the local supplier would not work it out for us. Its a six sided polygon as you have correctly surmised. Thank you for the mathematical advice, I will try that. Definitely not going to mix it ourselves!! Many thanks again
  12. Thank you all for your advice and suggestions. We have decided, following comments on the forum, to concrete just the area around the house and re-gravel the long part of the drive as this is quite steep. The gravel/calcaire we had put down 8 years ago has lasted til now and it was pretty painless to install and relatively cheap. I have noted the comment about attempting to do all the concreting at once, partitioning off is sound advice. However, I do have one final question (hopefully) - how do you calculate the square metres of ready mixed concrete you will need on an area with unequal side lengths? We have done numerous calculations and come up with widely differing measurements every time!! If there is some mathematics whizz out there who could work it out for us (or tell us how to do it) this would be great! Measurements around the edge of the drive are 5, 13, 20, 5, 5 and 15 metres - depth of cement will be 15cm. As always, thank you everyone who has taken the time to reply
  13. Called the Mairie and had a reply back today. No, we don't need permission for the landscaping or re-routing of our driveway as long as the access onto the road remains in the same place
  14. Perfect! Found the info by googling - in Aude its 18 euros for a "holiday" permit for an adult (i.e. over 12 years) so will invest in one of these this year. Thanks again everyone
  15. Thank you Lingone for the information. Seems a lot of hassle and expense for a few hours holiday fishing - probably won't bother this time!
  16. We go to our house in France each year in June and the Mairie allows fishing for free in the village lake during certain days of the month. There is a little chap who oversees the lake and we asked him last year whether we needed a licence. Whether this was lost in translation or not we don't know, but he said we didn't need anything. I'm not too sure about this and as my son wants to go fishing again this year I don't want him to get into trouble by not having the necessary licence/permit.
  17. We want to terrace our sloping front garden and cut a few winding paths into it because its quite steep to walk up in a straight line. We then intend to create large flower beds and plant up. Because the front garden is large, more than 2 acres and obviously very visible from the road, we are wondering if we need to obtain permission to landscape it? Thank you
  18. I am assuming it can only be the footer they are querying as I just ticked a box on the form, signed it and scanned it back by email. There wasn't even a message and in any case, if I do put a message on there I always do it in my broken French! Oh well, at least they've acknowledged receipt of the form which is all that is required!! Thanks all for your knowledge!
  19. I completed the document for the TV licence, ticked the box and signed it. Scanned it back as I always do but have received the following email reply. I didn't write anything in French so not sure what is meant by this! Can anyone shed any light as I must be missing something here. "Bonjour, Merci d'avoir rempli le document. Cependant, votre message ne peut être lu sans être rédigé en langue française."
  20. Hi there, can someone please advise as to what type of enterprise I need to search for in Pages Jaune for a company who lays asphalt/tarmac driveways? Thank you
  21. Thank you for your advice. I think we will go for the latter to be on the safe side. We have clay soil has a lot of rock in it but the site is quite sloping and we do get the occasional heavy vehicle at the house. Definitely using the wire mess and as its a large area want to get it right first time.
  22. Could someone advise on correct depth of concrete for a driveway. Thank you
  23. http://www.bricodepot.fr/carcassonne/plaquette-quotmaderaquot-beige/prod40081/ Thanks for this. They are actually these ones! Same range, different pattern
