SFR, Bouygues, especially Orange etc then you would find very similar complaints .. people very rarely write in to say how excellent the service is .. ?
  2. ericd wrote the following post at 26 Nov 2020 18:31: Have you seen the customer comments ...???? .... Oh yes I have .. but you know the French they love to complain ?. You asked for good Internet provider and I gave you one. I have almost lost count of the number of people to whom I have recommended Sosh .. For most people it works very well at v reasonable cost. I have been with them for 4 1/2 years .. mint for almost the same length of time. Many friends of ours here are with Sosh .. If you don't fancy them then there are others.
  3. It is more like a génoise as regards the form .. Edit : Quatre-quarts is slightly more dense than a Victoria sponge .. but it depends on the quality of the Quatre-quarts. Edit 2 : You're right mint .. the pic was visible when I posted it but smthg odd seems to have happened to it since .. tant pis.

Exactly .. plus the sounds of the birds darting to and fro overhead. Makes life worth living.
  5. Loiseau wrote the following post at 25 Nov 2020 2:27: It's what's known as a "quatre quarts" in French, Lori. Equal weights of four things: eggs, self-raising flour, butter and sugar. Except it always has some sort of filling in the middle ? I was taught to weigh the eggs .. then whatever their weight the same quantity of flour, fat and sugar.

I have cracked one of my molars; now a piece of tooth has detached itself - and I now need a temporary crown as an emergency. Apparently there is a system of 'dentistes de gardes' for such an emergency on a Sunday or you can ring 15 .. it's worth a try. Edit :There is usually a list of 'dentistes de gardes' if you put that into Google followed by your postal code. 'Vous pourrez Ă©galement contacter le SAMU au 15 ou encore le commissariat de police au 17 '..

Théière wrote the following post at 21 Nov 2020 20:59: Looks pretty nasty stuff creme fixe, packed with sugar and carrageenans which can cause inflammation, gastrointestinal ulcerations, and that it damages your digestive system. Maybe xanthum gum would work? Don't know about your option .. but I will add that the amount of crème fixe that is added/used is tiny .. so I'm convinced that it would not be enough to provoke the disastrous problems you mention.
  8. Weegie wrote the following post at 21 Nov 2020 18:44: You can use crème entière (Elle & Vire Normandie) and add a sachet of Crème Fixe, which thickens it. An alternative is Elle & Vire Crème à Fouetter et Mascarpone. I can endorse both/either of these methods as I have tried them both with success. Apparently, according to the tv adverts Elle et Vire has a new thick cream for sale .. but I can't remember the name, sorry?
  9. mint wrote the following post at 20 Nov 2020 11:17: Piece of cake, take photo, save and upload. Just be prepared to have photo rejected on some flimsy basis. We were told that OH's photo only "showed the face" ie only part of the head. But you can "insist" that you want to use the photo and, as long as you can give an explanation, the photo is then accepted. OH explained that, at his age, he'd lost some hair and what was left was white and didn't show on the photo. No problem after that. Oh you are getting so bolshie in your advancing years (smiley face) Brilliant description of what to do .. I shall save this ..

So very sorry to hear your news .. he had a lovely life with you .. you were fortunate to have found each other. I kept our cats' passports .. no one has ever questioned this.
  11. ericd wrote the following post at 14 Nov 2020 16:03: Question concerning the best (cheapest ...) internet provider. We now unplug the internet but carry on with our monthly internet subscription of €24.99 ..... The telephone itself has been off for more than one year and as we don't use it, I leave it off (we are in credit with Orange by €1.99 ...) Things have moved on a bit since the days of Orange Découverte .. you don't pay separately for phone and for internet any more. Nowadays most Internet contracts have included-in-the-price telephone calls to fixed phones in many countries of the world viz UK, Europe, USA etc. Sosh (Internet-only arm of Orange) sounds as though it would suit you very well. It costs 20€ a month all in. https://m.shop.sosh.fr/box-internet? or 30€ pm if you have a fibre connection nearby. Edit: Sorry my link is not live so you will have to copy and paste it into your browser. Apologies agaib .. the precise link was too long and caused problems on the Complete France web-site software.
  12. Just to see if this will post .. https://www.wionews.com/world/youre-fired-twitter-reminds-donald-trump-his-own-signature-style-341502 Sorry but you'll have to copy and paste .. but it is worth it.
  13. EuroTr@sh wrote the following post at 06 Nov 2020 11:06: Well yes Polly, you're not the first person to say that but nobody is listening right now, and for as long as Trump and Johnson stay in power they never will. Hopefully Biden will manage to scrape in ; he'll survive the Trump attacks and barbs, survive the legal avalanche to try to deter him . . without causing him a heart attack. As you say that might well upskittle Johnson's plans enough .. though with his wealthy cohorts behind him I'm not sure about that.
  14. EuroTr@sh wrote the following post at 06 Nov 2020 11:06: I've quite liked Polly Toynbee's pieces in the past but I think she's way off the mark with this one. So what is Toynbee's point? She just seems to be saying "let's cosy up to Europe again because it's nicer than America". Perhaps the British people want the UK to be more like America .. faster food, cheaper food (never mind the quality, feel the quantity) and cheaper clothes, cheaper fuel .. cheaper everything. But I think they might object if they then dialled 999 to request an ambulance because they didn't feel well and were told to get their credit card out to pay for the trip before the ambulance will be sent.
  15. mint wrote the following post at 25 Oct 2020 10:35: Parsnips, you mean that we can claim for 2018 and a reduction for 2019? mint .. please don't get your hopes up too much. Whilst it is truly great to hear from Parsnips (and I for one have hugely missed his well-considered advice) I was assured by our tax office .. (the senior bod himself) that they compute the years differently .. so my reclaim for years 2015/2016/2017 was relabelled by them as 2016, 2017 and 2018 .. this was when I queried their figures. So when I queried their calculations is when I rec'd his highships word .. from 2018 (income declared in 2019) the soc charges were (legally) changed to the 7.5% solidarity charge .. which apparently we have to pay as residents of France. So ditto for 2019 (declared in 2020) .. Unless Parsnips has again worked his magic spell and discovered that this 7.5% solidary charge is smthg else that we don't have to pay .. for the moment. Brexit looms large.
  16. AnOther wrote the following post at 25 Oct 2020 19:16: Many may remember the scabby wreck of a Merc which sat in virtual pole position in Bergerac airport forever too. We were there once (in 2010) to collect our son who flew in from the UK whilst OH and I were on holiday in the Dordogne. I do remember there being a motley assortment of abandoned cars in the airport car park .. so it was difficult to find a free space. Presumably, with the modifications there the wrecks have been removed. Years ago at Caen Ouistreham too there were many such wrecks abandoned in the car park .. hopefully they have now been removed.
  17. EuroTr@sh wrote the following post at 17 Oct 2020 18:38: The latest messages from the French government should have been reassuring for those who are firmly established here. And the latest gouv.fr output is reassuring for me and my ex-UK friends who have lived here for many years in the required stable and regular manner.
  18. Sunday Driver's Daughter wrote the following post at 17 Oct 2020 23:44: Hello - I'm Sunday Driver's daughter, Caroline. I was on this forum reading all the lovely comments you left when him and Mam were in the car crash. I thought I'd search for some of his posts when I came across this one. I'm really sorry to say he passed away January of this year after battling Alzheimer's and Dementia, not helped by mobility issues after the car crash. Thank you Caroline for taking the time to update us .. I am so sorry to hear of his death. He was so unstintingly helpful .. the slightest query and if it was in his realm of knowledge, then he would help. There are quite a few of us left on here .. but there are those who have moved on. Your father's name still crops up, especially where something bureaucratic rears its head. He was a genuinely lovely person so you must miss him hugely, we did when he left here .. so you take care of yourself .. and thank you once again.

  20. Lehaut wrote the following post at 11 Oct 2020 8:48: We toured Estonia and Finland very close to the Russian border on our motorbike three years ago, still few plugs in sinks and bathrooms! Yes I had heard that it was recommended even recently that you pack a plug of each size if you were planning a visit .. perhaps just not at the moment. On the serious side .. it is very grounding to learn of dreadful examples of 'man's inhumanity to man' .. in many ways humanity has come a long way in the last 100 years .. in some countries nothing much seems to have changed. It is still nigh on impossible to find out the truth about the awful treatment being afflicted on some citizens by their own governments.
  21. nomoss wrote the following post at 11 Oct 2020 18:14: Surely the hospital should have checked with her previous employers. Apparently they didn't bother ..
  22. How awful for you as well as the young mother concerned .. it was the most appalling event. The anaesthetist was reported by the staff on a couple of occasions saying that she was an accident waiting to happen .. and it did with catastrophic results. https://www.ladepeche.fr/2020/10/10/trois-ans-de-prison-et-linterdiction-definitive-dexercer-requis-contre-lanesthesiste-9130293.php Only 3 years prison for that .. it's not much is it ?
  23. NormanH wrote the following post at 10 Oct 2020 17:54: Even over 70 for some as I said on another thread. Guess OH and I will stay with Groupama then .. thank goodness they have been great. Possibly not the best, we'll never know .. but most satisfactory nonetheless.
  24. Michael Palin .. in young guise .. in once again on our screens. Talking at the mo of forced labour extracting uranium to build the Russian atomic bomb OH hates M Palin so I am filling my boots .. I studied Russian at a progressive Girl's High School in the UK in the 60's just before, and then around, the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Even though the film dates from 1997 M Palin had trouble finding a bathplug .. reminds me of the many stories our teacher (recently returned in 1966 from an exchange year in Russia) told of GUM and the difficulties of trying to buy anything useful .. even in Moscow. Brilliant .. for me ?

CJ wrote the following post at 08 Oct 2020 21:24: I came here for some general advice after a lot of reading and researching, some of the replies are spot on and some could be deemed as really negative , I haven't explained our background or our circumstances ... This is usually the problem .. not enough detail given in in the first post by a newbie and then, at the end, an invitation that all replies are welcome. It often leads to exactly the scenario you have recently experienced.
