    English for French kids

    Two of my neighbours have asked if I will help their children with their English studies. Both are girls, one just starting her second year of English classes at school and the other aged about 6/7. I've agreed to help but have been unable to access any suitable teaching materials. Would really appreciate some help and advice from any of you with knowledge/expertise in this area. Many thanks.

    Hi Ray and Jo,

    With regards to Inc. Ben., you need to get in touch with Newcastle and ask for info/help re. obtaining a form E121. When I applied for mine, over a year ago, there were rules about how long I had been in receipt of the higher level of Inc. Ben. - think it was a year, but not 100% certain. An E121 entitles you to 100% reimbursment of some drugs/treatment and about 70% of others. It is also possible to include family members on an E121, via an E107 (We're still in the middle of that process!) Good luck with the move and all your medical probs.

    Our passports need renewing in June next year. I'm not sure what to do as we now live permanently in France and we have British passports. I have tried using the search facility, presuming that this will commence an archive search. It doesn't. All I can access is a mish-mash of posts, mostly recent, covering a wide range of subjects, none having anything to do with passport renewal. The first ten or so posts are shown but the following pages don't seem to appear when requested. Maybe the relevant info. is in these following pages which I don't seem able to access? Please can anyone help?

    Inheriting property

    We live permanently in France and own no other property, although we do have endowments etc. which are not paid out for a few years yet. We have no children and no living parents and have had a "Donation Entre Epoux" drawn up by a notaire which ensures that when one of us dies, the house and monies etc. go automatically to the remaining partner. We THOUGHT that we could then make a French will, leaving house, monies etc. owned by the surviving partner to whoever we choose. However, we do have relatives in the U.K. Having read the above, and various similar threads in the past, does this mean that any surviving relatives must inherit or can we leave our money/property as we wish? This is really complicated stuff and we THOUGHT we had got it all sorted!!!

    Thanks for the reply. Have already contacted Counselling in France and unfortunately, there are no counsellors in this area. most appear to be in the south of France.

    Hi Trisha,
    We've lived in a small hamlet near Corbigny (just outside the Morvan!) for about 18 months. All contacts I've made with a local doctor have been fine. Neighbours, obviously, have preferences re. doctors but so far, everyone seems happy with services received. Also have French neighbours/aquaintances who've had minor/major surgery carried out quickly and efficiently. Think there's less "homely bedside manner" in the hospitals but the work they do seems to have good reports. Tests are carried out very quickly and results come fast too. It all seems a bit daunting at first because the system is very different - but, all in all, medical services in the region seem to be fine. Suppose Nevers is a bit of a treck for hospitals/clinics etc. (Local transport is more or less nil!!!) but there's a building in Avallon devoted to various/all(not sure)specialists and also an emergency dept at the hospital. Can't comment on dentists as we've only just made our first appointments - I'm terrified as usual.
    My major problem is the level of my French. We've managed officialdom and all the usual things OK. But talking to a doctor, even a really sympathetic guy like mine, can be very frustrating. I've come back from an appointment today knowing what to take, when and for how long. But I missed a good deal about the doctor's opinions about the types of drugs in general and their overall effects, usefulness etc. Guess this could be a real problem in a serious situation. Hopefully, your French is a lot better than mine.
    Best of luck with the house hunt. It's a wonderful area to live in. As I said, my only regret is not being able to speak fluent French.

    Someone once posted info. about a health phrase book, either here or in Links. Anyway can't find it anywhere , the book that is, so now think I may have some of the information wrong. As far as I recall, it was entitled, "What should I do?" and I have the ISBN number as 1-902983-01-7. Would be really gratefulm if anyone can help as I couldn't find anything relevant in the archives. Many thanks.

    Yesterday I discovered that I was no longer logged on to LF forum. Is this something to do with the changes that we were warned about recently? No trace of me could be found in LF records. Was told that I might have "disappeared" when the site crashed last October. Consequently, I've re-logged on today. However, there must have been some trace of me, as my profile shows my previous e-mail address. Can't change e-mail address on profile as it's marked with a red asterisk. Anyone know how I can change this bit of my profile?

    Cherry tree gunge

    Spent most of the day picking the first flush of our cherries (more to come!) so don't think the gunge did much harm. Spoiled the appearance of the tree for a while though.

    We have a huge cherry tree which is heaving with "would be" cherries. Last year it produced two cherries, right at the top, which of course the birds ate gleefully. Neighbours reckon they've never seen the tree laden with such a potentially huge crop, due they inform us to there being no frosts this May. So, we're now very down in the mouth as an infestion of black fly-like insects has descended. They seem to be concentrated at the ends of branches where the newest shoots are. The gunge from this infestation is actually oozing from the tree to the ground. However, the majority of the fruits seem to be unaffected. Does anyone know - will we have cherries, are these ordinary black flies? The tree is far too big to spray, although the ladybirds do seem to be gathering! Any help/advice/good news would be most gratefully received.

    Tips for learning vocabulary?

    Sorry,
    No wonderful tips. You've just got to knuckle down and learn the b*****s I find!!! However, listen to French TV and choose a word that occurs regularly - then learn it. That's how I got "selon" and "malgre" for instance. Also, listen to your French neighbours and do the same thing. This way I learned "tantot" and that you can't use "visiter" for visiting people. Slow, but it works for me.
