1. Why is there such feeling against owning a 4WD. I never owner one in the UK but here I live out in the sticks and at an altitude of 550m in a very hilly region. In the winter its essential otherwise I would not be able to get out at all sometimes. I bought the smallest 4WD  that would do the job. I get 12 kilometres per litre (gazole) which is better than some non 4WD cars. It's an essential, not a polluting status symbol Tony
2. Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately in my case the boards are pine and no more than 40 years old. Room was used as storage, not treated etc and so worms had fun especially on the edges of some boards. New owner subsequently treated floor and stopped further worms but although the boards are still quite strong, not pretty.. Still unsure of the best way round it as I agree an old floor looks better than a new one. Might sand, stain and polish a decent strip (where it won't show) and seem how it comes up. Tony
3. I am in exactly the same situation and am debating which is best. Old floor is structurally sound  but having got down on hands and knees to examine all over and tried a test sanding on an average bit I know that won't work. My supporting beams about 8 inches by 5 are sound, so there should be no problem with the extra weight. I was thinking of laying the spongy roll stuff in between (like that used under laminate floors) just to even out. Then nail new boards into the beams over the old ones. Haven't made a final decision yet as it a month or two away yet. I too, would be interested to hear from anyone who has tried this. Tony
4. If yoiu right click the link it should bring up a box with option. Choose the 'open linkl in new window' Viola. Tony
5. I buy all my DVD's from -  www.play.com Very reliable and full technical details as to languages etc. that are on the discs. Free postage to France/EU. The prices are good also. I think this was discussed in an earlier thread and the concensus of opinion was good. Tony
6. On a similar vein - I have a Sky subscription with a Uk address but am using digibox and card in France at the moment. I have a second tv running from the sky digibox. If I wanted a third tv could I buy a digibox and freesat card and run the third tv from a dual LNB ????. Obviously I would only receive the free channels on the third set. Also can anyone provide a link or list of which channels I could receive. Thanks - Tony
7. Is this for internal walls only or can it be used outside? I have to repoint the front of my house and need something with a consistent colour. Tony
8. Can you be more exact on your location. There are quite a few St. Sulphice. If its the one not far from me we may be able to help or know someone who can. Tony
9.
Checked out the website. They only seem to do single vision lenses and advise you to go to a regular optician if you have any out of the ordinary issues. Maybe ok for reading/driving glasses but tha...
I have just had a reply from them about this. They now do varifocals (individual quotes depending on prescription). If the price is right I will be giving them a try, as my last pair of specs in the UK cost £200. Tony
10. Used them about 15 times over the last year. Always had good service, and has been pointed out, the prices are usually lower. Tony
11. I installed one a month ago. All parts in box and pre-assembly was fine. No subsequent leaks in plumbing/drainage but did have a leak on one seam where I obviously did not seal correctly. Now fine. Perhaps you just got a bad one off. Tony
12. My friend has three adorable kittens that need good homes (or home !) Two females (one tortie, one tabby & white) and one male (white with black markings). All ready in next week or so. Near La Soutteraine, Haute Vienne (87), Creuse (23)  borders. Replies on the forum or tel 0555 71 30 07
13.
hi, having checked the site, http://www.phonexpat.com I am unable to find where It states that you recieve 240mins free calls, although the service does seem very good.
Got confirmation of our changeover to phonexpat a few days ago. The free 240 mins is included with the confirmation e-mail. Tony
14. 430 euros for a 2005 Hyundai Sante Fe 8cv 2 litre CRDi - with AGF. This is Fully Comp with max NCB and clean licence. I didn't think that was too bad and certainly less than I would have paid in the UK. Tony
15. Hi Car hire - only hired twice, and prebooked both times. Only a ten minute turn around. No problem. As for the terminal building - well completion was due April 2005. No update, so allowing for the French way of doing things I would say several months yet. Looks good though. Tony

cat export to France

We moved over in February this year. All 5 cats with rabies jabs about 7 weeks previous ( no blood tests as we/they aren't coming back ). Arrived Eurotunnel with full car and cats in caravan. "Do you have any animals travelling with you" " Yes five cats" Ok stick this in your windscreen" They didn't even ask to see the cats passports. Friends have had similar experiences. They don't sem to worry to much going to France, much more thorough comimh back to UK. It all depends on whether you want to take a chance. I doubt you would have a problem but you never can tell Bon chance - Tony
17. Europcar have an office (well portacabin) alongside the others just outside the temporary arrivals tent. used them last May. Good service and one or two of the staff speak some English if your French isn't up to it. You can book online. Prices were better than Avis or Hertz. One word of warning - I booked a Clio or similar but it was not available so they upgraded me prior to arrival - to a large 7 seater MPV. Not a problem for me but if you would be unhappy with that, make sure you advise them that you would want a similar size replacement if the booked model category was not available. I also used Europcar from Limoges this month - again good service (and right car this time) Bon Chance - Tony
18. Russethouse, I installed AVG7 about 3 weeks ago (was running v6) and have it set for automatic update but to be informed before a restart. It has updated and tested files flawlessly since them, without any restarts. (Win XP HE) This indicates to me that there are no major flaws in the new program. That only leaves yor PC. I am far from an expert but have you tried uninstalling AVG7, downloading it again and reinstalling. If that doesn't work then the problem must lie with your PC/firewall etc. It may be that you have one or two corrupt system files. Is your PC running smoothly apart from the AVG problem ? I don't know if ME works the same way as XP but could you try a repair of ME using the supplied ME disc. I had to do this once on a previous PC and it cured the problems I was having then. Sorry I can't be of more help. Tony
19. Nothing usually happens that quick. This is France after all. Ours took 4 months ! I, like you, thought all CdU applications HAD to go to the DDE. Strange, but if you have a positif legal CU good luck P.S. Don't bet on the builders being that fast Tony
20. Our C de U (in Creuse) was applied for mid August, as part of the compromis. We have just heard that it has been granted, but that the notaire won't receive official confirmation for another two weeks. That makes 4 months. Add another few weeks onto that before the acte can be signed. Look at it as an introduction to the normal (slow) speed of French systems Tony
21. If it is Virginia creeper, then all I do is rip it off. It comes away quite cleanly, leaving little in the way of tendrils/suckers. I just hack it back to the size I want and it just grows again. I have never tried this in winter, only spring or early autumn, so I don't know if a hard cut back would affect it if the sap is not rising. If its grown under roof tiles etc then you may have more of a problem. Tony

selling up

Regarding question 2, you said compromis, which is easily dealt with by post, without the need for the signature to be witnessed. If you meant the actual acte de vente, then answer 2 applies. Tony
23. ANPR - Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras have been in use in my area of the Uk for about 18 months. As you pass the camera it checks the Police National Computer (in about 2 seconds) which is also linked to the DVLA and insurance company databases. If your vehicle is untaxed (not just a few days late), you have no current insurance or you or the vehicle are of other police interest (e.g. wanted for unpaid fines or some other offence) then it will flag up automatically. These cameras usually have a team of police officers working with them and if your car is flagged they stop it. They have been so successful that the idea is being adopted nationally. Tony
