  1. We has a 5 bed CdH's and managed with registration at the CdC but if you have over 5 beds you come into the realms of all sorts of fire/food regs and are classed as a hotel. It does seem to vary from area to area but the easiest way of finding out might be a visit to the CdC.I've no doubt the easy tax regime applied to CdH;s doesn't apply either.
  2. Reading the above posting from BJSLIV,I hope that the Poole Harbour Authority will be renegogiating the harbour fees with B.F. and joining in those talks. The extra time talen on crossings to Portsmouth is and always been a pain. The design of the new ferries seems to miss the point that hundreds of passengers might want a HOT cup of coffee or a breakfast, even the loading and unloading of cars seem to now be a bit of a performance. So much easier and quicker on the Barfleur.
  3. Bread and dripping. Now that brings back memories. The best bit was the jelly in the bottom of the bowl but my brothers nearly always beat me to it. They would spread the jelly +dripping from the bottom by tipping the bowl out onto a plate ,then put the dripping back in the bowl minus the jelly. Another habit my younger brother developed was to empty the very rare tin of fruit by opening the tin bottom and then putting it back in the larder ,empty, the right way up.My elder brother usually got the blame. Back to KFC. ther's one in Winton Bournemouth and you get a nice waft of the burnt fat from about 200 yards. How the clothes stores nearby put up with it I don't know as it stinks, also amazed that the local council haven't insisted on a better extraction system.I suppose part of my dislike of KFC goes back to the late 70's when a friend of mine managed one ,also in Winton. I seem to remember the chickens arrive whole and they portion them in situ on a bandsaw. They were supposed to get 9 portions from one chicken but he managed to get 11. Our little gang virtually lived on chicken/chips/coleslaw/beans for about 3 months. No wonder I've gone off them.
  4. Having just driven to Dundee and back twice in the last month, one smell stays with me,that's the burnt fat smell when approaching the "Welcome Break's". How anyone actually eats the stuff I don't know, add to that the cardboard bucket of some strange brown liquid you see littering all the tables. No Thanks.
  5. When I mentioned the buildings/gardens I was referring to China. Having watched Kevin Mc Cloud trip in and around Mumbai, that put me off India. I do agree about the people striving for their childrens education and the pristine condition of the uniforms of those able to go to such schools. A land of have and have nots. The caste system seems even more extreem than our class system. Having a bit of a do some years ago I invited an Indian Barrister and an Indian Couple I knew well who had 3 restaurants assuming they would at least chat but my restaurant couple said that he won't talk to us as we are a lower caste. They had all been in Uk for many years. The intesting thing about watching the Chinese railways was the platform staff, in spotless uniforms standing to attention and saluting as the train arrives in the station. My last train journey in UK,I was directed to the wrong platform and the Buffet Car's first announcement" No hot food is available".
  6. Channel 209 on Free sat if anyone wonders what we are talking about. The Architecture and gardens are worth looking at and no litter.
  7. Some very sad sights indeed, couldn't agree more. Hard to comprehend the filth that many families and areas endure when you consider the wealth and man-power available.I wonder how the UK health and safety bods would get on out there?
  8. Brilliant series, very interesting insight into the local people.Glad to get and keep any job to advance themselves and provide for family young and old and very happy with their lot. Also watchedTomohiro 's journey around China on the trains shown on Japan Channel. Also a very interesting look at the people and places.I've always wanted to do one of the long train journey's like across Russia but have been a coward when thinking of the hygiene and food aspect and will probably settle for the Canada option.
  9. Yes,Very helpful and on the ball. Don't forget you have to sign up with your details a week or so before you want to transfer money. Once signed in and code number and contact given it is fairly straightforward. Allow for French bank delays and possible charge. If you bank with HSBC you will find MoneyCorp don't charge extra.
  10. My wife likes black and white photo's and having changed the Lumix G 1 to B&W can't find instructions to change it to colour. I have also read the 150+page instruction book several times but can't find this either. Any help appreciated. Regards.
  11. If the route was not up to profit margin I would have thought they could have reduced the number of sailings thus reducing fuel and port costs. How much incentive or advertising was put into advertising for trade from this side. I wrote to Mr.Longdon the M.D. about offering us cheap 24hr crossings from France during quieter off season periods, his reply was that they tried it once but many passengers didn't make the return trip? As you had to book by card payment and were informed at the time that a non-return would be debited at full price I thought the reply was poor. Why they still try to offer a "Cruise" experience with slot machine gambling and expensive shopping on these short routes I've never understood. One thought it that when the ships are designed and fitted out ,they are thinking of the re-sale value but it does seem an expensive long term profit making exercise. Anyway,as I can't afford to buy my Sunseeker to cross the wet bit I will remain most grateful for the remaining service. On that note I noticed a huge stock of Sunseekers at Poole and am informed that some staff have been laid off, a double shock for Poole and the Harbour income.
  12. I am hoping that some Mariner on the site could give some info on the comparable running costs Barfleur to Cap.F. having been on most of the "Cruise Ships" as B.F. now call them ,I still think the Barfleur was the safest and quickest to load./unload and sailed in virtually all weathers giving a very reliable service. Amazing how they have apparently run the Barfleur at a loss for over 7 years ,yet still managed to invest hundreds of millions on new ships.
  13. Having now read the "Catch" in the small print,:Anyone already on the land register doesn't qualify."I wondered given the way they deal with any other enquiries if they will notice I'm on there 14 times? Still wondering how many first time buyers can afford £250.000?
  14. After listening to Mr Darling's attempt at balancing the books,I just wondered as an O.A.P. if I return to UK and buy a house under £250K ,will I qualify for the stamp duty exemption? The other question is if you borrow another estimated £163 BILLION next year and slightly less each year for the next 3 years ,exactly how do you half what you aleady owe? I know I was only top in Art at school and somewhat down the ranking in Maths, usually 4thor5th out of 28 but I think I'm missing something somewhere, possibly in the repayment and interest department.
  15. My wife was an R.G.N. in Bournemouth,I believe I can safely say she was a Mature student and went to night school to get the required GCE.O-levels before she went on for nurse training which took a full 3 years. The interesting thing is that of a group of 14 who trained together only 2 are still in the NHS,both in Admin jobs. At no time did anyone from Management enquire why the other 12 where leaving the profession.Poor staff relations!! there was a common consensus that you definitely did not point out any failings of senior staff,a black mark would follow. Another member mentioned the savings that could/should be made by ridding the Agency syndrome and I wish they would apply some contract terms to the Consultants who seem to use the NHS services as a private income. The one problem with Agency nurses was that there was no patient knowledge, sometimes Agency nurses or nurse would be in charge of a ward after a hand-over and be there for one night only. Recently my eldest brother was in Hospital in the I. C. Unit and on several visits I couldn't understand what the nurse dealing with him was saying, neither could my wife and twice when phoning we were put through to a ward desk with details of the wrong patient after giving both Christian, sorry, first names, surname and date of birth. To cap it all he had £70 stolen out of his locker when someone didn't think he'd come to. Never happened before we were told, but soon found out differently.
  16. Quite funny really the criticism of the Daily Mail figures. Perhaps they take the figures,as in crime, immigration numbers, jobless,Army budgets/etc.etc issued by the Labour Party and double or quadruple them to try and get nearer the truth? Jay,please sort out your keyboard or your typing.
  17. Perhaps Mr Brown should have asked for your advice Krusty as you obviously have the ability to see several years into the future. Labour obviously can't as they are now re-opening 4 job-centres that they closed last year. I did note that one they closed in Bournemouth was a very large premises in one of the most expensive commercial property roads in the town and when vacated all the desks/info centres etc. etc where just left behind. Never mind ,as they like to say"Lessons will be learnt".
  18. Having just driven to Edinburgh/Dundee/Perth and Stirling ,I think you'll find that Scotland seems to be getting the Lion's share of the monies available at the moment. The amount or road improvements and bridge building going on was quite staggering. Especially so when the busiest parts of the motorways were this side of Scotch Corner. Just heard on the news of the decrease in funding to the Universities but not so in Scotland where an increase is expected. At one meal it was actually said, by our Scottish host ,that many in Scotland were amazed at how the English were allowing themselves to be dictated to.legislated and drained of their earnings and pensions ,by a crowd of Scots. Perhaps Brown and his cronies are going to jump ship now they've virtually sunk it and return to an Independant Scotland?
  19. If you advise your house insurer you should find that they will pay on receipt of your paid invoice.
  20. Following on from Benjamin's posting,I wondered why the UK had decided to take all this upon themselves. The only reason I can think of is to employ lots of unemployed, more perks for the higher desk bound and a slower rate of receiving any monies due.Or perhaps other E.U. member states don't trust the UK to pay up?
  21. With the projected drop in UK house prices of 30% over the next 5 years[mind you I did read this in the Mail ] I'm waiting for the B&Q sponsored shows that will show the profit .advantages and new life style from moving to the UK.
  22. As it's pouring with rain and my dear wife was having a nap I watched, without the sound on, "Sink The Bismark" for about the sixth time and yes they did but with horrendous losses on the H.M.S. Hood. Anyway, I noted how stunning the only lady, Dana Wynter, looked in the film. presume Hair extensions/face-lifts/botox/liposuction etc wasn't available then or the necessity to reveal the majority of one's body to get an admiring look. Pity the Mags/Rags and Add Companies couldn't start putting the message across.
  23. I note that the Government is withdrawing it's 100% guarantee on money deposited in Northern Rock in 3 months time. The FSA £50k still applies. Big queues tomorrow then?Just to keep "Will "happy I have 2 computer read-outs from the Nat,Ins. giving all payments made for my pension.Starting at 15 yrs old. When I queried certain entries I was sent another computer read-out giving 6 different entries plus a letter saying rip up the other one as these are quite often incorrect? Fills you with confidence doesn't it?
  24. THe most incompetant department in the Government!!! Just what I need this morning ,after 7 tax returns as a resident in France and virtually every tax office in the UK having many many files of forms and letters ,I had a letter this morning with about the 12th or more form to complete asking when I was leaving the UK? My reply nearly caught fire while I was writing it.No doubt it will cool down in the average 12 weeks in somebody's in-tray before it's binned, again. You never seem to be able to escape their clutches unless you are the biggest crook, scrounger or drug dealer going.
  25. You seem to know more about it than most but when faced with a similar problem at our last house on four joists in line, I accrowed up the joists from inside the house on a scaffold board to spread the load on the floor joists, plus one from the ground floor as in belt and braces ,then cut a mitre about 600mm in and grippfilled joint onto new piece.cut piece of marine ply about one metre long and gripfilled and screwed this on the side showing least. I think the house is still standing.
