  1. I love BMI Baby! I fly with them almost every month from Birmingham to Bordeaux and they have always been brilliant.  They are always punctual although I have had friends who have flown and been slightly delayed.  The worse thing about them is that they have still not listed any flights this winter from either Birmingham or Manchester to Bordeaux - this will be a total disaster.  They are always CONSIDERABLY cheaper than Flybe who must just think of a number then double then treble it and then add some more.  What area of the market are they aiming at I wonder?!
  2. We're lucky to have a really good course on our doorstep - Golf de Guinlet.  It's excellent and with a reasonable golfing calendar.  We also play as often as possible at Mont de Marsan which I think is a superb golf course and thankfully undiscovered.  There aren't too many others around here though so I can see what you mean.  You've some wonderful courses around you haven't you?
  3. Just in case nobody else replies to you (there don't seem to be many golfers who use this forum) I'd like to say that if we were closer we would take part.  We're in the Gers though and the north of the department too so sadly not close enough .  I really hope you do manage to find some golfers down there - best of luck.
  4. I can't believe that they would cancel the Birmingham flights as they are always well supported and it's the only airline that flies from Birmingham to Bordeaux.  Sadly the only other carrier to France from Birmingham, and it's to either Toulouse or Bergerac, is FlyBe and I really don't know where they conjure up their prices or what sector they are aiming at.  It certainly isn't a low cost airline - the prices are ridiculously high.  I've written to BMI Baby to ask for an explanation - amazing that an internet based company is not contactable by email but just snail mail so I may well be waiting until November for a reply!
  5. The Winter schedule for BMI Baby is now out but with no flights to Bordeaux from either Birmingham or Manchester after the end of October.  Does anyone know if they're cutting these services?  I phoned a really unhelpful call centre where the woman said that they don't fly this route in the winter which is weird because I've flown it almost every month for the past 3 years.  I therefore don't take her word for anything but does anyone know any different? Thanks
  6. Hey thanks again for the recommendations.  We didn't actually go to Pau on that day in the end as it was pouring with rain here in the Gers, but we do intend to go in the very near future.  Trouble is now I will be spoilt for choice! We did go for a brilliant meal here locally however which was a real discovery.  For anyone in the Gers looking for an exceptionally good lunch or dinner then try Le Phare in Moncrabeau near Condom.  Don't be put off by the look of the place - the food is gastronomic, the welcome is warm and the four course meal for four with two bottles of very good wine and coffee came to just 150 Euros.  I'm not related to them honestly!!! Kim
  7. Hi Jo No it's not too late - we will be in Pau on Sunday so your recommendations have come in the nick of time.  They all sound good so now which one to choose.........?   I shall consult the others and then see if we can get a table at one of them. Many thanks, Kim [:D]
  8. Thanks for the suggestions, however I'm looking for a more informal restaurant than the Michelin starred ones.  Somewhere where we can eat good regional food but in a more relaxed atmosphere if you know of any please?  Thanks again. [:D]
  9. Hi I'm looking for a good restaurant in Pau to go for Sunday lunch.  Does anyone know somewhere that serves good regional food with a good ambience please?  I've searched the internet and come up with one possibilty called O'Gascon but I'd love to hear from anyone that knows better. Many thanks [:)]
  10. We're going to Pau for the day with friends and are looking for a good place to have a leisurely Sunday lunch.  Can anyone please recommend somewhere that serves good regional food with good ambience?  I've been searching the internet for ages and have come up with O'Gascon which sounds  as if it might fit the bill but I'd love to hear from anyone that knows better! Many thanks [:)]
  11. We have a house in  a village nearby and from what I understand this is to be a retirement home just for the Dutch who are already colonising the local area.  From what I hear from our very friendly French neighbours and friends they are not at all happy with the current situation where the Dutch don't seem interested in integrating or using any of the local businesses.  The building of what would amount to be a Dutch ghetto is a terrible prospect and I can't understand why the local Maire would be encouraging this.  Retirement villages aren't a problem but race specific ones are a frightening prospect.  Maybe I don't know all the facts but I've heard about this many times and from many people so I have to assume there is a some truth in it.
  12. Hey Thanks for this information - I too lost the facility to preview the post and now thanks to your advice have re-enabled the facility.  Excellent! Best wishes Kim
  13. Hi Maggi That's a great help - thanks so much for the information and please thank Peter on my behalf.  The only problem will now be trying to make a decision as to which ones to play!  I think we'll eventually try all of them as they aren't more than 2 hours drive from our house but it's just finding the time really with so many other things to do. Many thanks, Kim  [:D]
  14. I'm about to book two rounds of golf somewhere around Biarritz for September.  There are many clubs to choose from all with their own merits but I'd be very interested to hear anyone's suggestions for the best two courses in the area that a group of 10-18 handicappers mights enjoy.  Perhaps we might take time to play at Pau on our way back to the Gers - would it be worth the detour? Many thanks
  15. Hi Our favourite is a white fleshed melon scooped into balls with the same amount of peeled seedless green grapes in a sugar syrup to which you add a teaspoon of rose water.  It's fiddly to peel the grapes but it's worth it.
  16. My husband travels between Calais and the Gers via Rouen, Le Mans, Alencon, Poitiers and Bordeaux.  He breaks the journey sometimes near to Poitiers at http://www.blondinhotel.fr/htfr/0001.htm  It's a clean well run hotel with a very good and busy restaurant and it's very reasonably priced.

  18. Hi I hire a car on a regular basis from both Bordeaux and Toulouse airports and always book through Auto Europe.  They give excellent service and their prices always seem to beat every other operator.  They use National Citer and Europcar but I prefer to use National Citer as they have better quality cars and a much easier check in system.  I have tried obtaining a quote from National Citer in France but they are never as cheap as going through Auto Europe and do not give unlimited mileage.  I have also hired with Auto Europe in Portugal and Spain and their service there has been excellent too.  http://www.auto-europe.co.uk/ They do cover Dinard airport and I have copied the agency hours for you as shown below: Hours: * OPEN Mondays 08:00 am-noon ,02:00 pm-06:45 pm * OPEN Tuesdays-Fridays 12:45 pm-06:45 pm * OPEN Saturdays noon-06:45 pm ,09:30 pm-10:30 pm * OPEN Sundays 09:00 am-10:00 am ,02:00 pm-06:45 pm
  19. I too would recommend the Michel Thomas course, both the initial 8 CD set and the Advanced Course.  I progressed through these last year and was able to converse quite well with our french neighbours who remarked on ho much my french had improved in a short time.    I have supplemented this with reading as much as possible, Paris Match etc and also watching TV5 on sky tv which helps with listening skills.  I also have the Independant free CD and the book and it's quite good but not as good when you just want to learn whilst driving or in other free time, unlike the Michel Thomas which you can listen to at any time. Good luck Kim
  20. I totally agree with you on the ridiculously high fares being charged by Flybe.  They need to watch out now that Easy Jet will be flying to Toulouse from Bristol and with people having the option to fly to Bordeaux with a very reasonable BMI from Birmingham the south west of France is well covered for people living in the Midlands and west of England.  Not only are their fares more expensive but they also charge for checked in baggage.  I don't understand their business model at all - are they a low cost airline or not?
  21. Well it's a crying shame that he didn't have the courtesy to personally say a public thank you to the brave soldiers who risked life and limb to save him.  In my opinion they should have left him there to suffer the consequences of his misguided actions.  If he had an ounce of common sense he would have known that he risked kidnap and that  ultimately it would result in some poor soldiers having to go and rescue him.
  22. Hi Chris I wonder if it snowed in March when you lived in Shropshire?  The weather is truly awful here at the moment - I bet it isn't like this in the Gers!  Thanks for the information, it sounds as if we will be busy in July - there is quite a lot to take off one of the trees so i guess it will have to be done over a few years.  If we did it all at once does it mean that the fruit will suffer or could we actually damage the tree itself? Best regards, Kim
  23. We have two large cherry trees in our garden.  They are 21 and 16 years old and were planted when each of the previous owner's sons were born so we daren't cut them down!  Last year we had a superb crop of cherries from each tree, the second one fruiting about a month after the first one.  However both trees are badly out of shape and one is too tall for the size of the garden and proximity to the surrounding houses.  When is the best time to prune these trees and does anyone know of someone who could do it for us?  We are in the north of the Gers - Montreal du Gers to be precise? Thank you
  24. I have rented many cars in France and have always used Auto Europe as they broker the best deal available every time.  Some other companies appear cheaper but when you add all the extras they always end up being more expensive.  Auto Europe tend to use National Citer and Europcar.  National Citer are an excellent company with the best quality cars and the least hassle checking in.  If you rent a Citroen C3 it will always be with National Citer.  I've tried going with Citer direct but they always end up being more expensive that going through Auto Europe.  When you reserve your car with AutoEurope it will say who the actual car hire company is and you can always change the booking - their after sales is superb. http://www.auto-europe.co.uk/index.cfm?site=gbr&changesite=1&c=0&aff=AUTOEUROPE Good luck Kim
