  1. I'm not sure if this has been touched upon, as I have not read the complete thread but, inmates are allowed to smoke in prison, and submariners are allowed to smoke in submarines, both government establishments   Merry Christmas to one & all.
  2. SD wrote: Regarding your comprehensive technical examination of your eastern European work colleages' vehicles, I can't really say any more..... Since when did a glance at the bald tyres of a beaten up, Latvian registered, BMW constitute a "comprehensive technical examination" None is needed to conclude its illegality.
  3. Mr banana (wooly or otherwise) I couldn't agree more about Ms Dawn Prim & Proper. You may remember when she was at the treasury, and was torn to shreds over her handling  of the IR 35 business. The lights are on, but nobody is in. Bedders
  4. Ali-cat wrote: We move into our own house in 2 weeks - so I hope (& pray) he'll be happier, there.  He hates having nothing to do (not that we did anything, before we moved!) but at least we will be able to get stuck into doing up the house & garden & come spring & summer I hope he'll start to appreciate our new life.  Hi, ex Ali@ards, Renting is fine to serve a purpose, but you cannot beat your own place. I'm sure that in 2 weeks time, Yourself & Mark will have your hands full, and more particularly so when spring arrives. It will add more structure to the week & he'll wonder what all the fuss was about. I remember he was getting more "wobbly" as the move got nearer, but you overcame that little problem. Best wishes.
  5. Thanks for your thoughts. Aliards, i remember your problems and "final arrangements" how do you find Charente? Yes is know its drive off the ferry and turn right, [:)] but generally, are you pleased with your choice? We certainly enjoyed our visit there, but there are so many regions in which we would be quite happy.
  6. There are those that may remember my "last chance saloon" ramblings last April/May time. Basically, it was about the choice between following your "dreams/ambitions" of moving to France and either leaving behind elderly Parents, or trying to coax them along with you. When our house went onto the market last year, the reaction was, "you go with our blessing of course" which was totally out of character. Now the reality has set in this has turned to "we're being dumped" "have we been such bad parents" "we're finished with you if you go" etc etc. We now have possible buyers for our property, without a chain, and we could find ourselves moving in March. All the above said has really taken the gloss off our proposed move, although things would never be the same even if we stayed. It's what's known as a lose lose situation. Answers on a postcard please.  [:(]
  7. I'm only surprised it's so few. If you asked a cross- section of those who actually know France well but have to live in the Chav-dominated, vomit-ridden, thug-infested, alcohol-soaked slum that England has become, I'm sure you'd get a rating of 4 out of 5. What a cheek, I didn't think the UK was that good[:D]  Bedders
  8. Diva Star asked: How did it go? Any nearer to realising your dream? I would have updated the story, but was aware of boring other people. We had 10 days in Jura, a week in Burgundy, & a few days in the Somme, paying our respects as it were. The upshot of it all, is that our house is now up for sale, although it looks as though we shall be going it alone. My parents thoroughly enjoyed the trip (as usual) but still insist it's not for them. What is really upsetting, is the fact that would seem to prefer the prospect of an old folks home in the UK to living a very comfortable life with us in France. Putting our proprty on the market does seem to have concentrated a few minds though, so nothing is cast in stone. We know where we want to live, along the Pyrenees chain somewhere between Tarascon & Pau, and there are even properties on the market at present which would suit us. Thanks for the interest, Bedders
  9. A great batsman, but not the most nimble of movers.[:$]   Bedders
  10. Where does poo come from?   George Bush & Tony Blair i'd say.
  11. Thank you all for your kind comments & observations. Iv'e just had a spiffing idea, my parents signed over their bungalow to me a few years back, now if i were to sell it from under them and turf them into the street...........[:D][:D]   Bedders
  12. All those that either live, have second homes or are nearly there, please spare us a thought over the next 3 x weeks. It will be our 3rd and probably final bid to make the move ourselves. This may sound melodramatic, but we have difficult circumstances to overcome, namely, aged parents. My parents are 80, in fair health, still live in their own property, but not surprisingly, are stuck in their ways. The problem is that my wife and i have this burning desire to move to the Pyrenees, before we also are too old to want the hassle. So what's the problem? well i'm the only child, and they are more reliant on us just recently and i don't think we are selfish enough to go it alone. They have been down to Tarascon Sur Ariege with us and also to Charente, both times really enjoying themselves, but not enough obviously to make it permanent. Next Monday we are off for 3 x weeks in the Jura and Burgundy, for a final attempt to "seduce" them. If it doesn't work this time i fear they may be too old to make the drive again. Anyone who hasn't been in this position, can't imagine how torn we feel. So please, wish us luck. Bedders.[:(]
  13. Thanks for your replies, i'll have to increase the overdraft! Maximum price in the UK so far is derv @ £1.06 per litre £1.05 for petrol, but that is an exception, not the rule....yet. Bedders
  14. Hi, Does anyone know the current price of unleaded (95) on the Autoroutes please. It's just so we can budget for the forthcoming hols. Thanks, Bedders
  15. We always pay our respects (usually around the cemetries near Arras) on the way home from holiday. This year on the way to Jura, we are stopping off for a couple of days in the Somme. It's such a small thing to do, compared to the sacrifice of others and we always end up in tears, but i wouldn't miss it. Bedders
  16. angels,  fairies, fées, hadas, feen, engel, angeles, anges, is it any wonder I mix them up, too many languages in my tete........   Well i'll go to the foot of my apple & pears, fluent in all those languages, and a Chelsea fan to boot. [8-)] It's a fair cop guv, i'll come quietly.   Bedders
  17. I saw an advert in the paper this week 'the most invisible hearing aid in the world'.  How can it me more invisible than invisible? That's technology for you, they must be getting less visible by the minute.
  18. "Gobsmacked." I'll "take a rain check" on that expression (at the end of the day)   Bedders
  19. Thankyou both for your help.   Bedders.
  20. More than 3/4 of France's electricity is generated by nuclear power; is that a good thing or a bad thing? I don't know. I think it depends on who you talk to and what factors are taken into consideration.   It does mean they are virtually self sufficient in their energy needs, which in todays climate (no pun intended) means so much. The UK for most of my life has been self sufficient in energy, but with the closure of the coal mines, the wasteful dash for gas, decommissioning of older nuclear stations and lack of investment in new generating capacity, we as a nation are heading for trouble. Many of the big old coal fired stations will be life expired soon and the only option is surely nuclear. We now import gas, coal and i assume heavy fuel oil, all of which leaves us wide open to a host of nasty scenarios.   Bedders

  22. One can always tell, that whenever a thread is started about the merits or otherwise of France, where the negative posts are going to coming from. This thread hasn't failed to follow that pattern. I'm with Gluestick & the "Most Holy" on this one . Leaving aside statistics, trends and suchlike, the UK doesn't have a good feel about it nowadays, and i've yet to meet anyone recently, who would contradict that.
  23. We shall be staying in the Jura, end of May/Early June, and would like to take a trip into Switzerland as it will be so close. Is there any extra paperwork we will require for our trip, or will the usual bits & pieces be sufficient? Finally can anyone recommend a particular route around lake Geneva, or is it all picture postcard. Thanks, Bedders
  24. Lesbian or not Quillan, your my hero, all those now classic aircraft, i hope you didn't get your suspender belt caught up in the tight cockpit of the Lightning. I worked for a while at the old Blackburne factory (Brough) where the Bev & buccaneer were produced. The old hands still have fond memories of both. If you have time do enlarge on your experiences. Tally Ho.
  25. Let's hope the Hoverspeed management are successful in reviving the Dover/Calais route, as the dedicated terminals at each end are sooo easy to use. On the downside with these boats, i find negotiating the tight turns inside with a 16 ft. long estate not for the fainthearted, perhaps this is to do with my driving though. Does anyone else have the same problems?
