  1. I will do, thank you. Hoping not to drop dead any time soon but I guess you never know.
  2. Hmm cant find any parpaings on site ! what does it mean ??
  3. thanks - i am a woman (I think !) and he is male. He has not worked in UK for long time; various jobs abroad so will not have UK contributions We will be renovating property - have sufficient savings to live on for couple of years and for all renovation costs but not going to have huge amount left after that.   Assume then he may have some problems in health care front.  Any further thoughts on this one? For other response - know what you are saying about inheritance.   My family have been made aware all goes to partner and trust them implicitly to see this is done if anything happens to me (dont laugh I know we all hear stories but i dont think i am rich enough to drive them into uncharacteristic mercenary behaviour!).   I will back this up a will, although not sure how much credence that will have in France. thanks - you can spend so much time reading this site its not true is it !
  4. Hi all My partner and i are moving to france in couple of months. House is in my name as I have been only one working for a few years now.      When I signed on for electric etc I also put these in my name - out of habit really as i do all the finance stuff generally.    Can anyone foresee any problems this may cause - an example; i know my partner wont be eligible for E106 form.  Assume i will be, but unfortunately didnt research this before and hadnt accounted for how long it seems to take to get one.   Understand that fact that we are not married will probably mean he wont be entitled to cover under my provisions....   fact that the house etc is in my name, is this going to cause him any problems with getting into the french system, healthcare or otherwise, does anyone know? I know about inheritance etc and since we are both childless neither of us have a great issue with this.   However, if there is anything else which might cause problems i would appreciate someone letting me know; similarly if there is anything we can do about it (without getting married that is !) thanks for any responses in advance.
  5. oh - above and beyond the call of duty - getting the tape measures out!! thanks all - happy to provide the same service in a couple of months when i get over there - tape measure at the ready ! thanks again
  6. Not sure you will ever get to the bottom of this one. My cat (rescue kitten from battersea) had a bad reaction to its flu jab first year, second year reaction was really bad - poor thing stumbled around the house for hours, unable at worst point to even climb on his favourite pouffe thing (very low !) called the vet and they basically said unless he looks like he's going to drop dead (admittedly they phrased it more sensitively than this !) then leave it to morning.    Next morning cat was - pardon the expression - fit as a butchers dog!   This year, we had to give him his flu and rabies (not together obviously).   In view of previous experience we had his flu and rabies done early morning with the vets on alert to the fact (this is in UK by the way) that being prone to vaccine reactions, we would bring him straight in to be kept in if any sign of trouble.     Well, you guessed it - no problems at all !   All hyped up for nothing - kept poking the poor cat awake wondering if he had dropped dead (no - just sleeping - or trying to !).   I have made our vet sound unpleasant and uncaring which is not the case, she is great !    But it seemed from her reaction that there was very little they can anyway do about this problem, other than control the symptoms if they become life-threatening.    Dont despair, it may never happen again - hopefully.
  7. not sure of spelling ....   I have been asked to find out if anyone knows if breeze blocks come in same size in france as in uk - am reliably informed the uk size of such blocks (I'm bored just writing this !!)   is 420 x 215 x 100.. can anyone confirm please if sizes are the same ? many thanks
  8. aha ! sounds logical.   Not connected to mains drainage - have the very expensive (well, actually it was probably quite reasonable now i come to think of it - being churlish now) bill for installing two brand new septic tanks a while ago.   On this note i must also say that there is nothing like a hole in the ground in stables, with a VERY tasteful saucepan lid covering, it to allow herculean bladder (and any other bodily functions) control.    Thinking back perhaps the money for the fosse septic(s) was worth every penny.     Think i have just had the bill for right to have septic tank - 155 euros - still investigating this one !     And I have to say here that I previously lived in Brussels for two years so although this was quite a while ago now, I probably have better than average French (never speak English when I am over there and no-one laughs (out loud anyway) kind of French!)   but the bills just confuse the hell out of me ! Oh well, what can do you - if you have to pay it, so be it. Thanks for advice.
  9. Hi All I recently received a bill from the Mairie which relates to water (in some fashion!) Clearly it is not a water bill, as it is not from a water supplier. It says Abonnement au reseau d'eau As its only for 34 euros I have happily paid it !   Still it would be nice to know what I am paying for. I had understood that the only local taxes were fonciere and habitation - none of which I have yet had by the way.   My post is regularly checked and these have not arrived.     We have also introduced ourselves to the Mayor last time over and gave him our Uk address (the bill above arrived here), so I am not quite sure what is going on here.   However, I am resolute that no-one can expect me to pay for something which has not yet been requested.      Any clues anyone? thanks
  10. Going to have to ask a really stupid supplementary question I am afraid ! Moving to France in April, will need (naturally) phone and internet connection;  dont have broadband in UK but have (just) enough understanding to know that you cant get broadband everywhere in UK - assume this to be the same in France? Thus, actually two stupid questions !! 1.   With the Free system described above, do you still need to pay some kind of phone line rental to, say, the French equivalent of BT ? 2.   Is this available in all areas of France (we are going to be rural Limousin)?   I would wait and ask neighbours but although they seem really sweet and relatively friendly, my gut feeling says that such issues will be way behind the welfare of their cows and not something they will have experience of ! Any responses appreciated.
  11. Hi All We have a property in Limousin - just got planning permission to convert barn and stables. Stables are quite small but very cute -  (or it will be, assuming it looks anything like architect's drawing at end !). Intending on just this one property to put in a wood burner hoping for a few out of season lets, or should i say really just to extend season a month or so either end of norm.   Considering also a hot tub type affair (outside not inside ! - not big enough inside!).   Although we could probably squeeze in two bedrooms have gone for just one (mezzanine level) bedroom, partly becuase two would be just too cramped and also because assume (perhaps completely incorrectly ?) that out of seasons are more likely to be couples. Wondering if anyone has any idea of what likely chances are of attracting out of season lets - would be willing, for example to have guests easter/christmas also - wouldnt bother us !   Certainly dont want long lets, but would be willing to consider 3/4 days long weekend type arrangements. Of course gite would still be available in summer also .... Thanks in advance for any responses !
  12. Hi All Many thanks for all your responses ... got a bit technical for me in the end there (!) but I have a lot more knowledge than I had a few days ago ... Happy New Year to you all ...
  13. Hi All Apologies because I am sure question I want to ask has been answere befored ...    probably so many years ago that I cant find it and am the only person in not so blissful ignorance ! We have house in Limousin, intend moving early April.    We dont have Sky in UK and have no particular wish to have it (and need I say pay for it !);   cant imagine living with just French TV however, having seen a flavour of it on holidays etc.   Is there any way we can get BBC/ITV - I know such things as Free view are available in UK, and have heard that free serve can be obtained in France (long distance lorry driver friend assures me he has a friend who receives - hmm) - not sure how this would work however. Any replies would really be appreciated - sorry to bore you - will try to think of a scintillating question which has never been asked for next try !!
  14. thanks all pleased to get a reply to my first message posted ! will take all of your advice into consideration - many thanks.
  15. Hi All We have a house in the Limousin area of france and are planning to move to said in spring next year.   Dont know yet if for ever or for trial! We want to buy/rescue a puppy.   In reality we pretty much have our hearts set on a leonberger puppy, for many reasons, prime amongst which is that we have a lovely stroppy rescue cat of 2 years old (ex Battersea) and we could not bear for him to become anything less than the definite head of the household he is right now.    We heard Leonbergers were particularly good with other animals.   Feel a big guilty because we have always done the rescue thing before with pets - part of me feels terrible for wanting to pay so much for a dog when there must be so many around in need of homes - nonetheless little***** as we call the cat takes first priority and i figure a puppy would be (kind of) tolerable to him, whereas an adult would not be. Question - does anyone know of a leoberger breeder in the area, or alternatively would be willing to consider any old mut as a rescue but would have to be a puppy for reasons given above - therefore rescue centres - do they exist in that area ?   thanks for any responses londoneye

  17. Dear All Forgive me as a newcomer to this forum for asking a variation on a topic which has probably bored most of you to death already. I have a house in the Limousin area of france - dont yet live there - and need to insulate loft.    Have been looking at the (err forgive the girly description !) - silver foil type stuff - however it seems incredibly expensive at m. bricolage.    Does anyone know where it can be obtained more cheaply ?    Its the  stuff that is meant to keep house warm in winter and cool(er) in summer.    Seems to me its a lot less expensive in UK - that being so does anyone know of a UK courier service that will take largish (eg insulation roll type size !) to france at reasonable cost.    Keep trying different places and package size is always too large.
