1.
Wow - that's a revolutionary thought, Baz! ;-) I have rummaged around and found the box, but of course I have removed the instructions "for safekeeping", no doubt. I have messed around with all the buttons on the phone itself, and can only find how to increase the ringer tone - which is not an issue. Will persevere with trying to find the instructions though. Angela
Angela, You could try Googling the phone manufacturer as often the user guide for your model or similar model is to be found on the site. For instance if it was a Panaosonic phone then the volume can only be adjusted when speaking which might be the same buttons as the ringer tone. Baz
  2.

...What we're after is a hands free - you know the kind with a terminal and one or two wireless extension phones. ...
I am interested in this thread as I am finding it difficult to hear the voice of my correspondents on my cordless phones, in UK as well as France.  I shift the handset up and down against my ear during conversations, hoping to find the best position - but to no avail.   I was thinking of getting my ears tested! Angela
Angela it might sound obvious, but, many DECT (cordless phones) allow you to increase the voice volume to the level you require. If you have difficulty hearing the caller then look at the instructions and hopefully that will cure your problem. Baz
  3. To get a safe answer you need to give your current chlorine reading as the strength of the chlorine in your pool is the important factor. Baz
Perhaps whoever has Graham Beale's email address could share with with the rest of us so we can all email him and copy in VIcky Emery.  We could then post a copy of the email here and get a sense of the numbers complaining so that they can't pretend it's a small minority. Thanks for a very informative site http://www.ceoemail.com/ one never knows when it will be useful, it is now in my favourites. Baz

  7.
My own experience EVERY TIME i travel to France (UK registered and insured comprehensive). I have been with MoreThan for many years and the story is the same every year....). I call them a couple weeks before travelling telling (always a call centre in Bangalore...) them we are off to France (sometime via Holland and Belgium). If the journey is more that 5 days, they ask me to pay for the additional level of cover(3rd part abroad to fully comp abroad) as multi-explained above (5 days or less is free and for as many trips as you want). I ring on day one telling them that i will be travelling for 5 days there and back. Certificate of fully comprehensive insurance on the Continent is then sent directly to my home address. I repeat this little exercise for as long as it takes to cover our entire stay in France. I end up with 3 or 4 certificate of insurance ensuring we are covered fully comprehensive (as per the UK) when we travel on holiday and at no extra cost.
I would have my doubts about the validity of these 5 day covers. If you were involved in a claim and the Insurance company  asked for evidence of your crossing dates (very likely due to the current false claims scams in the UK) that may well invalidate your comprehensive cover and would  revert you to minimum cover. I certainly would check to see if you method for getting around paying for the cover is valid. Baz

    Tooth abscess
Hello, fellow sufferers Some information and reassurance sought. I've had a very nasty tooth abscess for at least 8 weeks now.  Have been to the dentist, taken the antibiotics and the special mouthwash. The little pimply thing through which the yucky stuff was discharging has now closed up.  However, I am still getting quite a lot of pain and tenderness near that area.  Is this normal and to be expected?
Though out my life I have suffered numerous tooth abscesses and I know only too well the suffering you are going through. What concerns me is that you have had it for 8 weeks as the treatment received should have worked in no more than 8-10 days. You really should stop your suffering and have the tooth removed as I do not believe there is now any alternative.  I certainly would not go away without having it sorted, do not be alarmed if the tooth is removed as I am sure the dentist will show you the abscess and you will be pleased to get it out of your system. I hope you will be pain free quickly now.   Baz
  9.
I generally try to squirrel away 10% of my salary every month.  I've deposited funds in the Livret d'Epargne Populaire, Livret A, and Livret de Developpement Durable, up to the maximum amounts permitted.  In addition, I've been sending money to the Nationwide and buying a Nationwide bond every so often, but the £50,000 limit for compensation under the government's protection scheme is fast approaching and I don't want to exceed that.
Just a couple of points, firstly the limit is increased to £100,000 if in joint names. The second point is that following a European Commission ruling on 12 July 2010, the £50,000 savings safety limit will almost certainly increase to €100,000 at the end of 2010. Based on exchange rates at the time of the announcement, that equates to £83,680 of protection, though the exact Sterling amount has yet to be set. This has to be confirmed by the British Government, however, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme say this  should only be a formality. Baz
  10. I can understand why many of you are complaining to Nationwide but it will make no difference, because the truth and reasons for their action is clearly  summed up by Martin Lewis' (Money Saving Expert). "It's not an error by Nationwide, the building society is actually trying to kick nearly a million customers out of the door. That's because out of its 3 million+ account holders, 1.4 million use the debit card overseas and 900,000 of those use the account ONLY for that and nothing else – and that costs. So Nationwide wants them gone to ensure it's focusing on people using their account 'properly', as it sees it." The full article is here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/travel/2010/07/nationwide-kills-cheap-overseas-spending-for-current-account-customers Baz
  11. Whilst the days of cheap cash withdrawals from Nationwide are numbered with the Flex account cards, it is worth noting that Nationwide's credit cards will continue to offer free use abroad within the VISA European region and a 1% charge worldwide. The exchange rates on these cards are the same as used on Flex account cards and will one of the best UK cards available for purchases outside the UK. Baz
  12.
Personally I would prefer to keep the £ 20,000 for my own health requirements than throw it away in a bureaucratic pot-pourri.
If you take current care home costs in the UK in excess of £2000 per month then that would pay for less than 20 months,  may be enough if you know the date of your demise. Baz
  13. What is nice there seems to be no restrictions to view on a UK based computer. I wonder if they are going to add TV1 Baz
  14. The pre gassed split units are easy to install, in fact the hole in the wall is possibly the difficult part. The one I installed a few years ago has worked without problems in the summer and heats very well in the winter if required. The units are available on Ebay for around £250 and I think at that price it is money well spent, do not consider the portable air-conditioners which are pretty hopeless. Baz
  15.
. Does anybody know if I use my UK mobile phone to telephone Sky myself could they detect the call was coming from France?
There is no way that Sky will know in which country you are using your UK mobile. However. there is a possibility that your call may be logged as International and Sky will then cancel you card permanently. The only foolproof  way of talking to Sky is from the UK, this can be achieved by supplying your contact with the details given by Will. But possibly the best method would be connected to your UK contact whilst they speak to Sky, so at least you will be on hand to answer any additional questions if required. Baz
  16. Parts of the UK's airspace are at risk of closure from Sunday because of volcanic activity. Disruption could hit airports in south-east England until Tuesday.  The situation will be clearer by Sunday, but it might be worth checking if you are flying in the next couple of days before going to the airport Baz
  17. I have been  using this type of dispenser for a few years, once you get the right setting for your size pool, they work very well and need little or no maintenance other than filling  with more gallets when required. Baz
  18. Whilst on the surface it may initial seem unfair that the so called low cost airlines will have to pay large compensation claims, they will surely reclaim this cost by just finding another item to add to their extra charges. So it will be the future travellers who will repay the money outlayed by O'Leary and co. Baz
  19. One word of advice about reducing or stopping medication for depression, is that this should really only be undertaken with the help of a GP or Consultant. The effects of withdrawal can often be far worse than the depression and needs to be done very gradually over a long period. Baz
  20. I have an Acer Aspire 6920 which I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 and the bluetooth is operating normally. I know it sounds basic but why not contact Acer Customer Support Centre, if in France tel: 0825 00 22 37 (0.15€/min) Baz
  21.

Paul, I have used Microfusion for a number of years both in the UK and France and in fact covers most of Europe. There is no monthly or annual  fee for updating and for the price it  costs barely more than one speeding ticket. http://www.microfuzion.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=MFZUNIT Baz
Baz, does that also work out average speed through average speed camera sections that are becoming ever more popular ?
Paul, it is not necessary to work out the average speed, as an irate female voice will sternly tell you that you are exceeding the limit and will keep repeating the warning  until you drop your speed to the permitted level. I have nothing to do with company, but must say it is a marvellous little gadget and as well as visually telling you the information, it is the voice warnings that keep you on your toes. The uploading of new information is easy and fast and sometimes has even  temporary roadwork speed restrictions incorporated. You can even put you own warnings in if they have been missed but that is very rare. It has other interesting information incorporated but the most useful is that it shows continuously your accurate speed via satellite and then you can see how inaccurate you car speedometer is. Also red light camera warnings are verbally given. Baz\

  23. John, what a beautiful piece of woodwork, you should be very proud of your result. Baz
  24. I agree with a previous poster that £68 for a I day hire out of Toulouse is probable the cheapest price you can expect. Hiring a car for less than about 3 days is very expensive, you can check www.travelsupermarket.com to see wide selection of prices. baz
  25. A fascinating clip of an obviously talented craftsman. Baz
