  1. Help wanted from the builders, please. I intend building a low wall/fence between our house and our very friendly neighbours. The wall part will be constructed out of standard 15cm wide blocks two high. The fence will consist of metal posts and supports where necessary let into the top of these blocks with three strands of wire to support heather brush (brande in French?) coming to a total of 1.5mtrs high. The length will be 15mtrs. Speaking to our neighbour and agreeing exactly where the boundary was, he then suggested that I would need to use a reinforced footing 25cm wide by 10cm deep to stop the wall tumbling over (his words) and with reinforced pillars every 2mtrs or so. Two questions arise: 1. Do I really need to reinforce the footing with metal "grillage"? 2. What is the opinion of the need for the pillars? Clearly I do not want to upset my neighbour by appearing just to ignore him but on the other hand, as an amateur, I do not want to do any more work than is absolutely necessary. The job is too small to interest an artisan so I'm stuck with D I Y. Incidentally we are not interested in just a fence made out of "brande" as we want a solid base to stop the rabbits making unsightly holes in the bottom. Thank you. Benjamin ps I tried to post this yesterday but it got lost somewhere in the system so if it turns up elsewhere sorry in advance.
  2. Stuart   Thanks for the info. The only bit that confuses me (we haven't got ours yet) is if you've just paid on line why do you need to send the direct debit form to your bank?   ps the website for paying your speeding fines on line is also very easy and user friendly.
  3. Fairly standard practice. Whether they're making sure you actually have a licence to drive, how many endorsements you have or don't have or what the hell, just let them take a copy. I can't really remember, but doesn't your licence state when it was issued?
  4. Arnold If it's any help I was first insured in 1998 with AGF based upon a letter from my previous English insurers (Prudential) stating that I had a minimum of four years no claims bonus and I have recently moved my insurance to Pacifica (via my local Credit Agricole). See my previous posting for the info I was asked to provide. Why not try either of these two if Groupama don't come up with the goods.
  5. I've just changed my insurer (French) and was asked by the new insurance company to provide proof of no claims within 28 days. I phoned my previous broker and received their confirmation in the post the next day. The document was titled " Releve d'Informations Prevenu Par L'Arrete Du 22/07/83. As I understand it your driving record is only based on the last three years and the maximum reduction I have ever been quoted is 50%.
  6. Quite simple really. It was the owner before that who had the telephone. Once we gave F T their surname we had a working phone line within 36 hours.
  7. Sorry Ron, but what I described was exactly what happened to us in March of this year when we bought this house where the previous owner hadn't had a telephone.
  8. What they really should have asked you is if you knew the surname of the previous people who had a phone there. Then they would have known the number and reallocated it to you.
