  1. We had a note from the Mairie on Sunday to say that we will be given one free mask for each person "when they have some available" (can't remember ther exact French...) In fact I have made several fabric masks trying out patterns. OH says the trouble is most of the patterns seem to assume that actually breathing is optional. I volunteered and am in the process of making 40 fabric masks for the Department to give to those workers who have a lot of face to face contact with the public.  You get given kits which make 20, including fabric, elastic, filter stuff (looks very like interfacing but more mesh-y - ladies who sew will understand...) and also a little soft metal 5cm  "baguettes" to bend over the nose. Simple to make and I will use the pattern to make others for us if only I can find, or think of something to replace, the little baguettes. In the meantime we are mostly going to use proper medical ones being sold in packs of five at the till (you must ask for them) in Carrefour shops. They are being sold at cost so 2.50 for five.  They have the baguette nose pieces which make a huge difference to comfort. Stay well, take care
» This is in Manche but perhaps other departments are doing it too?  I have sent an email to my Mairie. Happy sewing Mrs. H
  3. I took a very small pension pot as a lump sum 2 or 3 years ago.  I am sure it was Parsnips who posted that one should enter it on the French tax return in a box for "one-off" pensions. Which is what I did. Tax automatically taken in UK refunded on request and the amount taxed in France at a fixed (low) rate. I was very happy with this outcome! If needed I could check the box number for you. It could change of course when this years' form is out.Mrs H.
  4. Never received any interest in the the previous round of refunds or this one.In La Manche.
  5. As our UK ehic cards run out in February (next month) I telephoned the UK and asked what was happening. Two new cards are on their way and I am told that are usable up until 31.12.20 or perhaps longer if a deal is reached about this. The lady I spoke to said they are all very stressed about constantly having to talk about it!Although we live in France (so ehic is based on S1) we are holidaying in Germany in April so needed to know the position.
  6. Hi ElleI think you are being more than kind to your accountant.  Having been in practice for 30 plus years (in the UK - I am a Charteredf Accountant) I can tell you that what your accountant said about being too busy was totally unprofessional.I am certain that had we ever said such a thing to a client they would have immediately have become ex-clients.All accountants have busy times (ours in later years was 31st January when the Tax forms have to be in) but you work longer hours if need be.  In any case I do not understand the accountant not knowing the correct tax that would be payable. We did even 20 years ago, professional computer programs rarely get it wrong and we found quite frequently that if the tax office paperwork did not agree with ours then usually ours was right! We just sent printed copies to the tax office and they confirmed it.  I am assuming that your tax affairs are not very, very, complicated! If they are then you are using the wrong accountant.Good luck when you get to see your accountant next, be firm though and insist on an explanation of the tax. Mrs H.
  7. Chessie:  If you are in a village or small town your Mairie will point you in the right direction for help. You need perhaps to chat to a social worker. Most villages/towns have a S.Worker available once a week or so just to go and chat with. Your doctor too will know where to get help, you do not need O. H,. to go to doctor - just go yourself.Been there, done that (and got the t-shirt) with a parent - lots of help available.Bon courage.
  8. Success: letter today saying that we will be refunded Social charges for 2015 and 2016. I had sent a reminder a couple of weeks ago.Need to look at position re 2017.
  9. Very strict rules to cover changing back. Manche (where we live)  do not have any roads 10 km long with no turnings off (have to have no overtaking at all so barrier...?) so we cannot do it at all.All in our Manche Libre newspaper last Thursday. They called the rules "draconian". The above is a rough explanation, the article took up half a page.
  10. "Where have all the posters gone"?  - Fed up with clicking silly box re cookies so only checking in occasionally. I shall give up althother soon if it not fixed.
  11. Thanks Pomme.  I asked as my son had to have an IDP to drive on holiday in the Uk - he swapped his UK licence for a Québec one some years ago.
  12. Reading about an International driving permit for Brits (i.e. on holiday OR living here if still holding GB licence) so that they can drive in France. What about those of us who changed our licences for French ones some years ago: will we need an IDP to drive in the UK?Seems to me it works (or doesn't both ways...)
  13. I am absolutely fed up with clicking "agree" - it has been happening for a couple of weeks, every time I click on a section, then again on a topic, again to first page etc. Please help or I shall not even check this site any more...Mrs H Edit: and again when I had clicked "post", then yet again to "edit".  It really is no joke.
  14. The CESU  credit for "staff" (!) is refunded if it takes one down past zero. Happened last year to an oldie we know - who pays no tax - and to us too this year. Payment straight into bank account. This year a payment in advance was made in January on the assumption tax situation the same as previous year.
  15. Odd that it says Caen as we are between Caen and Rennes and did not feel a thing!
  16. One plus point for having to wait two working days before making a first payment to a new person is that it avoids the trap fallen into so often in the UK apparently of people transferring money out to scammers with no oversight. If they had to wait two days it would give time to check! It is only the first time on any payment to a third party - at least it is with Credit Agricole. After that it is instant.  The only time it has been a bit annoying was when I needed to add a new account for my daughter in Germany and had to go into the bank to set the account up - they seem to think we may not understand the way other countries's IBAN numbers are set out (they are pretty much identical in Germany)!Mrs H.
  17. Assuming you are registered for online banking with your bank you follow instructions on the bank's website! This may involve a delay once you set up the payee, it does with Credit Ag.
  18. HiNo they know we are British - we think that we probably should have gone to the Mairie once we were abolished from the Uk voting lists  earlier this year and asked, formally, to be able to vote in the EU elections.Never mind, as you so with so many groups standing it is a minefield.
  19. Well, we got all chuffed as some new voting cards arrived in our post box yesterday. Our village has merged into a new commune but we have had voting cards for some years. We thought, good we can definitely vote on Sunday then BUT printed on the cards - just under the address of where to vote it says - "valable uniquement pour les élections municipales".To be fair this is what our original cards said but we had forgotten this. Too late now but we will go to our Mairie at some point and ask why we cannot vote in the EU elections.
  20. Well, David, we have to disagree with your remarks. UK rents are potentially taxable in the UK (if below the personal allowance then in fact no tax). It is nothing to do with being an overseas landlord - that merely means that if above a given figure (last time I looked it was £100 per week per owner, so £200 a week if owned jointly by a couple) then tax must be deducted by tenant or agent. This tax is potentially repayable and after a while, usually, one can get a letter stating that the tax need not be deducted any more. We have been in this position for over 15 years. Our rent does not actually attract tax in the UK as it is below our joint personal allowance but we still fill in tax form. In France the net figure is used to calculate tax rate - as stated above. Can you tell us what authority (e.g. accoutant or a book etc) you say what you do please?Thank you
  21. Good idea, simpler in the long run.
  22. It is ETP but I think you have to be around as all the people, ther than a "moniter" have learning or other difficulties. ETP is Entreprise Travail Protegée ( spelling may be wrong)
  23. I had the same thing but the Firefox update fixed it without needing download anything else - the Ublock Origin  just re-apeared!It was indeed awful whilst it lasted...
