1. We made sure that the person whose address we used (the mother in law!) didn't already have Sky, so I'm sorry I can't answer that one.  We have Sky+ and the full package also we have the same multi room facility that we had in the U.K.  Only problem is that you can only watch the same channel as the main t.v and change the channel by the main t.v.  If you want to watch different channels I think you probably have to have two separate digi boxes?  The guy who installed our system used to be a Sky engineer in the U.K so we had no problems with the installation.  My OH is the same and couldn't survive without Sky Sports!
2. When we put our card in the digibox for the first time a message came up on screen with a phone number to ring and register the card.  I used my U.K mobile to ring them and they asked the card number and told me that it would be actived over the next few hours.  Everything was working within about 2 hours.  Before we lived here in France permanently we used to turn off the electric before we returned to the U.K (to comply with our insurance) and on return to France we often had to wait between 6 and 12 hours for all the channels to 'tune' themselves back in.  Good Luck
3. In the UK I've always had subtle highlights.  I was told by a friend that I needed to ask for a 'meche'.  Hadn't realised that they don't do subtle here and came out looking rather like a badger with broad stripes of brown and blond.  Suppose I ought to be thankful that I didn't get the 'village cut' which here also looks orange and fluffy. Amusing

Pierre, I think (hope) this is what my dear little old French neighbour is doing.  It is more like this gesture than the 'other' one Thanks all for the enlightenment. Pat

Amusing

I just heard about this website on Sky news and had a peek on there hoping I might learn something.  My elderly French neighbour often uses a gesture that at first horrified me.  She uses the hand gesture that in the UK means w....r????   I realised (hoped) that this must mean something different to the UK version but would love to have an interpretation from someone who knows. She is a lovely old lady and I would hate to think that it has the same meaning here as in the UK!!  I have seen other people use it followed by the Gallic Shrug. Pat
6. I also haven't heard of Foradil but have suffered asthma for 50 odd years and been prescribed hundreds of Ventolins and Becotides over the years. I was sent to see an Allergiste by my French doctor.  He did numerous tests and prescribed a Singulair tablet at night and a Seretide inhaler.  The difference is absolutely amazing and I haven't had to use the Ventolin or Becotide since starting the treatment, although he said that I must keep a Ventolin 'just in case'. He said that this treatment is primarily used for allergic asthma although no  doctor in the U.K ever concluded that I had 'allergic' asthma, just keep prescribing the inhalers even though I had an asthma review every year. This usually consisted of a nurse checking that I was using the Ventolin correctly!  Many times I asked if there had been any advances in the treatment of asthma and was always told 'Keep taking the Ventolin and Bectide because it seems to work for you'. Good luck with your treatment Pat
7. I worked in Local Government before taking early retirement three years ago.  I understood that if you are in receipt of a pension paid by the government, this type of pension is liable for tax in the U.K although must be declared on a French tax return as it is taken into account when assessing the tax level in France.  I was told this by Newcastle and have also posted about this on various forums and have been advised that this is so. I understand this only applies to pensions paid by the government.   If this is correct would this not also apply to the Lump sum also paid by the government?  In Local Government only amounts under £30000 were not liable for tax when I retired. I'm not sure if this amount is still the same.
8. We are with the HSBC and have had no problems with them before or since our move here to France.  In the run up to our move they were very helpful and supplied us with a personal phone number for our original local branch and of course their International 24 hour hotline number.  They even phoned us up here in France to inform us when the U.K based solicitor had deposited the funds in our account for our U.K house sale, because we didn't have internet access at the time. The internet access to our accounts hasn't been a problem once, of course, we were connected. We have had no problems with our two credit card companies (one is the HSBC) We just receive the monthly statements here in France and pay them up online.

Moles!!!

We have also just moved to a house with a garden which is full of moles.  We've been out and bought a couple of those sonic devices that emit a beep and for two weeks now have had just as many mole hills as ever.  They even come up right next to the the devices, so in my opinion a total waste of money.  I think we will just have to learn to live with the little b...ers and do as suggested on here, use the soil for potting up cuttings!
10. We decided to sow grass seed last week 6 weeks early as the sunshine and rain here in 53 made it more like October than August.  We already have a covering of fine grass........!!
11. Breaking news on Sky this lunchtime is stating that France and Austria have ordered all domestic poultry to be kept indoors
12.
Never heard of them. I thought AI stood for Artificial Intelligence.
When I saw the title of this post.  I thought it was the A1 that I travel down on my way down to the Channel Tunnel and thought to myself hmmmmm, yes there are a load of idiots on the A1............ooops
13. Just an update on the Certificate of Conformity for Peugot cars.  I was advised by our local Peugot dealer here in the U.K to ring the following number to organise this. 02476 883000.  I need to send them proof of ownership and the vehicle ID number and they will then issue me with one.  (This only applies to Peugot cars).  Hopefully this is one less problem to sort when we register the car in France! Pat
14. Deimos, I have been following this thread also.  Can you let me know the details of the prefix based service as I want to investigate all options before we arrive in March. Many thanks Pat
15. I'll try the dealer who we bought the car off firstly and if I get no joy will write to the address that you gave Bill. Many thanks Pat
