1. Just managed to log in and boy is this forum different! It took ages to find active threads - why hide that? Thibault
2. Great idea WB - they could send up white smoke when they have made the agreement!
3. If the UK leaves with no deal, the number plate which has the EU flag and GB will not longer be valid and a separate GB sticker is needed. If you have a number plate which includes the GB, but no EU flag - that will be valid.
4. I am totally disillusioned with politics. Having voted in every possible election since I obtained my majority, I now find myself effectively disenfranchised
5. Well, hello, YCCMB - long time, no hear!
6. Well, the answer is obvious - stop the French people in these villages selling to the damn British - problem solved. Persuade young French couples to take on run-down old rural houses, refurbish them and live in the villages. No need then to worry about being taken over by foreigners.
7. I always thought it was the UK's strong opposition to an EU army which stopped the plan coming into fruition. Now the UK is leaving, the others will go ahead.
8. Sorry for the muddle in my post above, but I can't edit it to make sense
9.
Yes among the voters for the Primaires. He has a good chance of being elected as the candidate. But as I said the problem will come if he comes up against LePen in the second round of the actual Présidentielles... His economic programme means he is seen as a 'French Thatcher', and if he is up against Le Pen in the final round she is likely to get the votes of many of the people who would previously That accounts for the British media saying that FN supporters didn't want Sarkozy because his policies were close to FN policies and people would be more likely to vote for him and not Le Pen in the second round. Therefore they voted to ensure another candidate won. voted for the left, in a repetition of the pro-Brexit and Pro-Trump voting pattern.
10. The UK media are saying that FN supporters voted to ensure that Sarkozy did not win, as he was advocating many of the FN policies and FN supporters were worried that people would vote for him rather than Marine Le Pen in the second round. Interesting theory.
11. You could be right, Woolybanana. Previously we were an isolated house on a chemin with no identifiers, then the Mairie put up new 'place name signs' and included our house in with the farm.
12. Our commune has one postcode and although there are not that many inhabitants, the houses are well scattered. Our house has two names - one on the deeds and a different one on some utility bills, official documents etc. The only problem is that the 'official' name applies to a few houses scattered around a fairly large farm. All delivery vehicles automatically end up at the farm, despite our careful instructions on how to find us. We even give maps when we make an order, but it makes no difference - everyone ends up at the farm.
13. I think it is part of the tall poppy syndrome, YCCMB, and the relishing of continuing to kick a man or woman long after events have moved on. Would people have preferred him to do a Gordon Brown - continue to occupy a seat, collect a salary and expenses, yet never appear in Parliament except for one or two debates? By the way, Mint, when Cameron became PM, he gave up his PM's pension entitlement.
14. I don't have a TV set in France, but like to get French DVDs to watch in the UK. The sub-titles are very helpful as French is a homophonic language and it is sometimes difficult to spot the actual word.
15. Recently I saw a DVD which had French sub-titles for the hard of hearing - I have been looking for this for years, as I would like to watch French films with French subtitles to help my language development, but have been unable to find any. However I finally had success with the latest 'Visitors' film!
