  1. Thank you Aquenais for your reply and I went to the site you mentioned and would you believe it,it was all in French! What a liberty! (Only joking!)I trawled through it and made sense of it and I am now more enlightened. I studied my last account and confirmed that the Heures Creuses,(hollow hours')when the price of a unit is cheaper is from 10pm until 6am. But I could not determine how much cheaper it was! But I suppose it is worth waiting until those times before you put your washing machine on. If anyone else has any more helpful information for me and all the other high payers, please do not hesitate to add your two euros worth! Thank you! Lautrec
  2. I have tried 'Search' and have been on the EDF web site, but still I have not seen the light! Could any kind person explain how the Tariff system works and how to get the best deal! What time of the day or night does the reduced rates cut in? We have been living here for two years and not to put a fine point on it, we are still in the dark as to how our accounts are calculated. Lautrec
  3. I only need my mobile for emergency use should I break down on the road. My Nokia,in common with all other mobiles, allows you to call free to Emergency numbers and Roadside Assistance without any other device in the phone, other than a SIM card! No worry about monthly fees! Lautrec.
  4. Clair, you could try using 'Systems Restore' and set the date before the date you first downloaded Symmatec. It might possible solve the problem! Lautrec
  5. I was told when I lived in England, that France was very good for arthritis!. It is true! I was only here six months when I got it! But joking aside, (was that a joke?) I suffered bad arthritis in my middle finger of my right hand. During a barbecue, I was stung on the finger next to it by a very small wasp. It was much more painful than usual and the pain lasted about three days. It was then I discovered that the arthritis pain in my finger was completely healed and after four months has not returned! I have also a very painful right toe, but all the healing wasps and bees have disapeared for the Winter. So I will have to hobble about until Dr Bee-Wasp returns again next year! I have researched on the web and it would appear that there are plenty of bee venom capsules on the market, but I have a feeling that draught venom must be more effective than the bottled kind and certainly much cheaper!(If more painful!) Has anyone else had experience of this?
  6. Thank you Ron for mentioning System Restore. I didn't do exactly as you suggested, I just restored my PC to a date before the problem reared its ugly Stetson and it seems that it has got rid of that pop-up pest! So fingers crossed, it may be gone for good. Yeehaw! Lautrec
  7. My computer has been infested with a spyware selling advert for a programme called SPY SHERIFF! I already have a spyware programme installed and have no need of another premium one. But can I get rid of this terrible invasive pop up. I have tried every thing that I can think of but as soon as I unistall it on the add and remove action. it returns to haunt me. If anyone who has had experience of this pest and found a way to shoot the Sheriff, please oh please tell me how I can send it back to where it comes from! Lautrec
  8. When lights start flashing and you are advised to take the printer back to the dealer, then is the time to say farewell Epson. You are very lucky Opas to get 5 years servive from your machine, I usually have to buy a new one every two years. But whatever you do, do not buy the branded ink cartidges, which usually retail for the same price as a new printer. There are many firms which sell what is called compatable cartridges for a fraction of the price and they are as good as the originals. I always buy mine from [email protected] for a fraction of the cost. They will arrive to France in a couple of days after ordering! Lautrec
  9. The web site you need is www.degrouptest.com It will tell you if your area is ADSL usable! Regards Lautrec.
  10. Regarding my opening post regarding W C's. On looking on the shelves of Leclerc, I noticed that they have three or four sanitary products for cleaning the pan, including Harpic, which are fosse septique friendly. So we have bought three of four different ones and will see if they do the trick. But eventually, I thing the rubber gloves and pumuce stone, will have to be used first. Thanks for all your comments! Lautrec.
  11. Thank you everyone for your kind suggestions. It all boils down to; Taking a chance with the Spirits of salt. Rubber gloves and a pumice stone! or my favourite, flat Coca Cola! The only trouble witht the latter,is that it makes the coke taste pretty horrible afterwards!
  12. Sorry to bring the tone of this forum down, but can anyone advise me what to use in the toilet pan to remove bad staining and calcification if you are not on main drains and are using a fosse septique. Normally, back in the UK we would dose it with a strong bleach, but we understand that this would be detrimental to the fosse action. So if anyone in the same situation has a solution, we shall be very pleased to hear of it! Lautrec
  13. Last week in E.Leclerc in Ruffec, they were selling 5kg's of wild bird seed for 1.29 Euros and packets of eight fatballs for less than one Euro! I could not believe how incredibly cheap they were and took the opportunity to stockpile before they put the prices up! Lautrec.

  15. Thank you Les. The site you have given me seems to be able to answer my query. Thank you for your input. Regards. Lautrec.
  16. I am trying to transfer music on mini disc to CD Rom! I think it can be done using my computer to link up between the two systems. Could anyone tell me how I go about it! Lautrec
  17. I installed my own Dish without any trouble. Using a hand compass and pointing it roughly South East. I had already purchased a Satellite bleeper when I was in the UK and after conecting it to the aerial, I moved the dish until I got a loud continuous bleep. Lock the dish in place. Bingo! Try contacting www.satelliteonline.co.uk. I paid about £25 two years ago! Happy viewing! Lautrec. PS> You might need to obtain a bigger dish than the small ones used in the UK
  18. Some good friends of ours are packing their bags and returning broken-hearted to the UK. After five years of renovation of an old property, they are forced to move back as their money has now run out. This is, I think everybody's nightmare! I could not see myself living back in England again as I am completely cativated by the way of life over here! I know that it is not perfect, but the UK does not attract me anymore! Has anybody in this situation thought of selling their house and with the proceeds, rent a nice property for the rest of their days?  The proceeds of the sale should pay the rental for many years and if you had a secure tenancy, what snags might there be? Lautrec PS. My title should read THEIR not there!

  20. Further to my original topic I raised, my wife & I have just returned from the local CPAM office at Ruffec. Presented our attestation to the official and asked for the E111. He was very friendly and efficient and after a couple of entries on his computer, printed off the forms that we required. It has been said that you may not need these documents in the UK, but better safe than financially sorry! Lautrec
  21. "You need to get your chimney swept once a year and a certificate, as proof for your insurance" I understand you can buy from the Super Marche, a burnable chemical 'log' which when ignited, cleans your chimney! It comes with an appropriate certificate. If this true, could anyone who has used this method, please confirm that it is efficient!
  22. Thanks Les, Funny thing is, that we were going down to the CPAM this afternoon to deposit our receipts with them, so now we can enquire about this neccessary form. Many thanks again. Lautrec.
  23. My wife and I are making our first return visit to the UK since arriving in France two years ago! Could some kind forum member please inform me if there is a French equivalent of the E101; should we need emergency medical assistance whilst over there! I think that it is more likely that I might need stress therapy when I encounter the crowds of people and heavy traffic there, compared with the relative calm of the Charente! Lautrec
  24. If we want to buy or sell any household goods in Ruffec, we go along to the local Bricomarche store, where the public have use of a large notice board. It is a free service and always brings results! Make up a placard on your PC and always add photos to get maximum response. Write it in English and French and always put suggested prices that you require for the bigger items. It is worth a try! Lautrec.
  25. Hello Peter, Many thanks for your reply. If it had come a week earlier, we would be asking you to assist my friends. In desparation, they have had a relative hire a Luton Van in Devon and is actually on the way now to pick up there chattels. But thank you for your kind offer. Regards. Lautrec.
