  1. Calling all infrequent mobile phone users.  I have a mobile phone which I always keep in my car for emergency breakdown use only. I do not charge it with a cash card as they only have a life of one month and as I do not have call to use it very often, the credit gets wiped out after the 30 day period. But without being charged it enables me to call for my breakdown assistance in the event of an mechanical breakdown. I did hear somewhere that there is a card issued which does not have a time limit. Can anyone give me any information on this please?
  2. Thank you for all replies and for the helpful advice. Firstly Tresco, Wanadoo are owned by France Telecom and hopefully that being the case; they might be inclined to make a gesture to me, in the way of a part refund, but it might be with the middle finger! Ron Avery, you said that your problem was similar and so you took out your modem. All I have done is to pull the telephone connection out from it. Do you think that is suffcient or should I also disconnect the modem internally?  In answer to your query, I never ever had dial-up with Wanadoo, I went right into ADSL at the inset! As someone else remarked; If I wanted broadband, I had to go to Wanadoo as the only server in this area of the Charente. So now, with the aid of my Desktop Translator, I will now compose my begging letter to France Telecom in my best 'pigeon Francais!' I may plead poverty or just plain ignorance, or a combination of both with a little slice of pathos thrown in! I will state  my success or lack of it on this site. Watch this space! Lautrec.
  3. Have recently switched from Tiscali dial-up to Wanadoo ADSL. I must admit it was a difficult transfer with all sorts of problems to hurdle before all was finalized. I took out a standing order (prelevement) with Wanadoo and paid monthly. After a couple of months; on checking my France Telecom account, I discovered to my horror, that I was paying a dial-up charge to them on top of my monthly charge with my new server! I wrote to FT and asked for an explanation why I was paying them although I had a monthly account with Wanadoo and was told that I was still connected to them with my dial-up modem which was not needed anymore as I was now using a LiveBox for my ADSL broadband connection. I quickly pulled out the telephone plug from the back of my computer; two months to late; leaving me with an extra charge for France telecom for Euros165. I know it was a mistake caused by my ignorance and I will contact France Telecom and without much hope; try to get a refund for the amount I have paid them. Anyone going through the same process; please take note! Lautrec.
  4. Since I have been living in France, I have really missed my cooked apples; ie Bramleys! Could anyone tell me the name of a easily purchased French cooking apple?
  5. Thank you for the information. I wish I had asked earlier as I had been creeping out at midnight to water the garden all through September and October. In the meantime, I have set up a 1000 litre storage tank; fed from the roof rain water, so I am able to top up my above ground pool when it loses water through evaporation for this coming 'dry season'. I will use the web sit that was mentioned to monitor the situation as the season advances! Lautrec.
  6. Does anyone know if the hose pipe ban which commenced in April 2005 was ever recinded? Furthermore, if it was, when does the next one start?
  7. Hi Brilec. Thank you for mailing me the Disk and look forward to its arrival tomorrow, ( I hope!) Regards  Lautrec.
  8. Referring to all the past postings, I don't think it would not have been possible to renew my UK licence from here without getting a UK doctors note to send with the application and using a UK address on your licence that was not your own! It would not bear examination by the local police. However, I have now reached a favourable conclusion and exchanged my UK licence with the French counterpart. It was so easy to do!. Travelled the 20 kms to Confolen and went into the Sous Prefecture, which is situated on the riverside. My wife and I were the only people  waiting to be served, which was prompt and efficient. Handed over the UK licence with two photos, utility bill, showed my passport and signed a form which was completed by the assistant. Only one snag, they do not accept passport pics that have been processed on the computer and so we went up the road to the nearby Intermarche store and made use of their photo booth. Back to the Prefecture; handed over the pics together with an SAE and lo and behold, three days later the new document was popped into our boite de poste. There is nothing on the new licence which prevents me using it outside of France and cost was Eur25!  It was much easier than I thought! Lautrec.
  9. Hello Brilec, Thank you for your kind offer and I have sent you an e mail with all my details. Regards Lautrec
  10. Thank you both for your kind replies, but I have already tried what you have suggested and have downloaded a driver from the PB website. However,  when I complained to a friend that I could not get it to work, he told me that there was a difference between drivers and the CD Rom software. He said that the driver can only be affective after the software disk has been downloaded.  Is he right, or am I being misled? Lautrec
  11. I am on the scrounge! When I had Spyware problems recently, I had to completely reformat my PC with the aid of the Master Disks to get it up and working again!. I managed to download all my other hardware except for my scanner; for which the CD Rom seems to have gone 'walkabouts'! So I am appealing to anyone that happens to have the CD Rom for the Packard Bell (Mustek) Diamond 1200+ scanner? and if you should have one, would you consider sending it to me (or a copy) so that I can start scanning again! I would be more than grateful and would of course return it and recompence for any charge or expenses incurred.! I  hope that I might get a positive reply. Thank you! Lautrec
  12. In desparation I am posting  an appeal in this listing.. I have a Packard Bell (Mustek) Diamond 1200+ scanner sans the software to download it on my PC. Would any kind person with this PC Rom consider sending it (or a copy) so that I can bring this excellent scanner back into the fold. This is in the aftermath of a very serious Spyware attack when I was forced to wipe of my hard drive and completely reformat it! I will of course recompence for any expenses incurred. Lautrec
  13. Under French law, is it correct to state that a spouse on the death of his/her married partner is liable up to 20% tax on the value of their estate (15,000 to E500,000),  including UK assets, with only an allowance of E70,000?
  14. Thank you all for the info, I am now getting on top of the problem and I have put up many mre defences and hope that I might have solved the problem. Lautrec
  15. Further to my last posting. I have solved some, maybe all of my problems with a web site called Hijack this! It scans your hard drive and then you skip through all the files until you can pick out the harmful ones. One click and they have gone. (or I hope they have gone for good!) It seems to be a solution. Lautrec.
  16. Hi Sid, Yes!, you are right. It masquerades as Spyware, but it is an insidious virus. I have been on Torrents and have lately downloaded quite a few albums of music and I think that is where the 'nasties'  have come from! I am at the moment seeking out further protection and staying off dubious web sites. Hoping to beat this menace in the end! Lautrec.
  17. Having a nightmare with Spyware infection and have done a lot of surfing research to try to get rid of it. It has wiped my PC out twice in the last month, but with a lot of worry and hard work, I am gradually getting on top of it. If you havn't installed an Anti-Virus protecter, a Fire wall and a Ad-aware download, you could be next! Be very careful! Lautrec
  18. Thanks LaBucherie. Hope you are right. Will check it out! Lautrec.
  19. It appears that if you switch to a French licence and you are over 70, it is clearly marked that it is not valid in any other country other than France. You would think that they would encourage you to drive outside of France to lessen the risk to their own drivers!  I think that is a fact that you must have an address in the UK to renew an existing UK licence! Lautrec
  20. There comes a time in everyones life when ones driving licence is expiring and he is at the fragile age when questions are asked about his fitness and ability to drive! I am aware that switching to a French licence is an alternative, but this document, at my age, bars me from driving a vehicle in the UK! So I was wondering if it is at all possible to renew my ailing UK licence from here in France, even though I may have to be certified by a French doctor, to be fit and able to drive safely! The question I would like to raise is, would the UK authorities accept a French doctors note to my medical fitness? Has anyone had any experience of this situation? I would like to hear from you! Lautrec.
  21. I have too the same delay  getting my first connection; usually about 5 - 10 minutes. This is not too bad if you only have to experience it at the beginning of a session, but my computer has the the nasty habit of breaking the connection if I do not use the PC for 5 minutes or so! That is annoying, but the most upsetting extra is, the only way I can get 'back on line' is to completely reboot the computer.. So I have the same wait all over again! Is there any other sufferer has discovered the cure for this? Lautrec
  22. Thanks Will, I understand your instructions and know exactly what I am supposed to do. But Percy Computer does not want to comply and I still seem to have trouble getting the Outlook Express 6 to come up with my servers name to enable me to proceed. Still, I have only had one attempt lasting 30 minutes and I will try again today after the Rugby!.(Swing low!) Regards.Lautrec
  23. Hi Will, Eager to put this reconfigeration to work and understand the process very graphically described. But I do not how to get the first stage up. This is the first one on your instruction sheet, called Microsoft Outlook Express. I can find Microsoft Outlook and and I can also find Outlook Express but not the first one! Could you instruct me how to find it? Regards. Lautrec.
  24. I have used Onspeed for a year and have found that it definitely speeds up downloading from the Internet, but it does not speed up the actual working of the computer. I would definitely recommend it! Lautrec.
  25. Hi Peebee, I have have a RHD car and have driven it in France for nearly three years and never have I found it a a handicap, in fact I recently had the chance to swap cars to a LHD from someone returning to the UK, but as they say.....the devil you know etc, so I decided to keep the RHD as I find it no problem on the roads here. If you like the car you have at the moment, keep it! Lautrec.
