  1. What a sad story, I do hope the woman concerned recovers OK. What is the situation for people who have retired/early retired in the UK and go to live in France? Do you have to pay private insurance to get treatment? What sort of money would be involved for a couple? Our pension won't be great and we wouldn't be able to afford the council tax here! Anyway have been thinking about retiring to our little house in France.
  2. Oh dear! Just checked BMI Baby's winter schedule. They are not doing any winter flights (i.e. after end of October) Nottingham (East Midlands) to Toulouse. Luckily this year's autumn half term ends in October, but the last 2 years it's gone into November. This is very disappointing as we live in Nottingham and Toulouse is the nearest airport to our French House which we bought last summer. Anyone know of any reasonable alternatives? Nottingham-Bordeaux is possible but no flights on Saturdays. Maz
  3. I think the mairie is the building and the maire the person. We visited our maire and he was very friendly and casually dressed (it was very hot last summer). He seemed slightly surprised to see us. We've since been told he's the local vet. I suspect he might speak some English but didn't mention it! It never occurred to to us to take a gift, certainly wouldn't do it to a council official in the UK.
  4. I know you're not supposed to advertise but someone could perhaps help. I'm hoping to get a B & B for 2 or 3 nights (end of August) so we can travel on the Petit Train Jaune from Villefranche in S W France up to the Pyrenees and explore that area a bit. I posted on S W France and got no info except I was told it's in South East France and a couple of people said it's really worth a trip. Our house is too far away for a day trip and we feel we could have a real holiday, having spent every trip decorating, gardening etc. Anyone happen to know of anywhere? (French or English or whatever) Preferably friendly and not too expensive?
