  1. I'd spotted this too. & I agree.. >Could/would LF consider splitting the Sections >up into Sea Travel and >another one entitled Travelling to >France by plane or train? Whilst on this subject. Has anyone tried travelling from somewhere in France to Somewhere in the UK that ain't Paris or London, by train, having booked a ticket via the Internet or their local SNCF office? We are desperate to try it (from Rennes to Glasgow for daughter's graduation) but can't seem to "make it work" > Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  2. Is this genuine? Tina was emailing yesterday, when the Tiscali server froze. WHen I ran IE, we were presented with a page (not the one we asked for) thus (rather poor machine translation, I'm afraid); You benefit today from an Unlimited fixed price Internet Total Tiscali and you use to connect you to Internet, in a permanent or occasional way, a line ISDN. To continue to profit from Internet and in accordance with the General Conditions from Use of Tiscali, in particular article 1.1.3 of the Particular Provisions, you will have to subscribe to Total the Illimit fixed price option ISDN. The price of your Total Illimit fixed price option ISDN will be from now on of 74,95 per month. What you it will occur? Your new Total Illimit fixed price option ISDN will automatically replace your preceding fixed price as from your next invoice. And you will continue to profit in real time from the improvements from our network and the new Tiscali services. And if I wish to cancel my subscription? If you wish to cancel your subscription before this date, it is enough for you to address your request by simple letter to us to the following address: Tiscali - ISDN 33071 Bordeaux cedex. Well sincerely, Stphanie Joelle Direct of the Subscriptions N.B. Your residence east can be located in a zone where the ADSL Tiscali is available. If you have another telephone line (not ISDN), to check immediately if you can also benefit yourselves from the ADSL Tiscali, while clicking here. If you do not have another telephone line, you must beforehand cancel your line ISDN near your operator and transform this one into analogical line. Attention, to be able surfer again, you owe reconnecter. Is it genuine, or a hoax (I can't imagine how it would work if it were a hoax). I promptly signed up with 9Online for the price I was originally paying Tiscali, so if it was a hoax, then it was aimed at Tiscali.... I am using ISDN & can't get ADSL - am I being naive in thinking that a 3-fold increase for ISDN is a rip-off? Nick http://www.apl
  3. Pretty much. Post either way can take 3-10 days to rural 22. I post about 20 items/day. All properly stamped & in airmail envelopes. I've got used to it by now. Nick http://www.apla
  4. Of course you can. There should be nothing to stop you relocating your business to France. It is, however, certainly not as easy as in the UK, but in my experience if you hire a good (French, in France!) accountant, then it ain't too problematic -they are cheap, too. Don't be tempted to try to set a UK ltd co. and run it here - it won't work and it will cost you more in the long run. Conform to the French system & it will all be OK! Bon chance Nick If you want to be allowed to use URL's in sig files, email Forum Admin.
  5. I'm afraid I can't answer your question (you need a lawyer!) but having just researched and ordered a pool (and a spa, which cost more than the pool) I can tell you that if you have an above-ground pool, then you do not need any security, or planning permission. Wierd. Nick I love URL's in sigs

  7. LAST EDITED ON 19-Apr-04 AT 07:21 AM (GMT) Problem is, Brittany is (in common with most of France) a very big place..... When we were in Western France, most of the postings seemed to come from the west - a long way from us, near Dinan. This forum has more in common with us than "them lot" ..... Nick Sig deleted - but more on that later ......
  8. >Has anybody had experience of UK >M.O.T. running out whilst staying >in France. Our trips have >been long ones i.e. over >3 months stay and I'm >trying to foresee what may >crop up while we are >away. Or is it illegal >to be without an M.O.T. >on your UK registered vehicle >in France? I suspect that this is a grey area (it has been discussed many times before). e.g. Our Clio is UK registered, but the tax expired in December & the MOT ran out in March. We can't get it MOT'd (because we are not returning to the UK). It is insured in France (on it's Brit plates). The insurance Co just tells us to get a CT & re-register it within the next 12 months, not having an MOT does not interest them. I guess your situation is different because you intend to take the car "home". The only driving you can do in the UK without an MOT is to the nearest (empahsis on the nearest) MOT test centre for a pre-arranged test. I doubt if you would get nicked if you decided to drive to your UK base - but (and maybe) your insurance could be invalid with no MOT - with everything that implies. Best, and probably the only solution, as others have suggested, get a new MOT before you leave. Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  9. There is a demand for qualified Artisans all over France, so I doubt that you would have trouble finding work (although, if you have little or no French, then you may be limited to working for the ex-pat community). Be aware that the process involved in becoming self-employed in France is long-winded, expensive and tedious - it is nothing like the UK - (I am now paying an accountant to sort it out for me). Don't be tempted to work illegally (i.e. without registering) - the penalties are severe and applied with vigour. Plus, if someone else is paying for you to move, jump at it! 11. Hello new Moderators (is it a proper name?) One point, what is a moderator, if you can't contact him/her because his/her email is inactive? Just wondered..... Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  12. In our Guide d'urgence (Broons/Caulnes) they are listed in St Briieuc - 02.96.62.31.06 Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  13. Lots! Try any of the DIY shops, or Jugon les Lacs.... Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  14. Hi That's fine by me, if you feel the need to ask us for permission........ I reckon that on a Forum dedicated to "Living France" that you will be in a minority! I have to ask, though; Do you need to work? I certainly wouldn't if I didn't have to. If the answer is yes, then I guess that you haven't got a choice but to return to the UK. Pity really because I, like the most of us, strive to stay here. Good luck, whatever.. Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  15. Welcome! In theory at least, the UK & France have the same mains voltage. In practice it isn't, but it doesn't matter. All your UK equipment will work ( a kettle may take a little longer to boil etc etc, due to the slightly lower voltage). Just change the plugs. Be aware that French mains supplies tend to be limited, so a large UK-sourced electric cooker may keep blowing your trip. Your PAL camcorder will probably work on a French TV (they tend to be PAL, the UK standard & SECAM, the FRench one) - it will certainly work via the A/V or SCART socket on any TV. Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  16. If you still read this forum Please drop me a PM, because the return email address you gave me does not work! Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  17. Hello If all you want is the BBC (and who wouldn't?) then is is really very simple; Buy & install a Sky Digibox & dish. You won't need a card and it will not be difficult to set up (even in Bergerac!). Get the equiment from your local "dish" supplier, or buy it from eBay UK (lots and lots available) - most UK suppliers will send it to France. Plenty of other information on this forum. Do a searck on "Sky" or "FTA". Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  18. It really is that easy! I would venture to suggest that someone capable of erecting a sat dish is also capable of aligning it. Even if you can't get the correct signal, you can't do any damage. I hope that your experiences will convince others to give it a go. Happy viewing! (remind me why you want to watch the TV?) Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  19. The difference is in the LNB. Only some (by no means all) LNB's are compatible with both systems. Do you suspect that the dish you are trying to set up is (or was) analogue? Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  20. I must admit that I have never subscribed to this (or any other) monthly. I buy LF when I can (increasingly difficult nowadays), usually from Portsmouth Ferry Terminal, as I am passing through. I can't bring myself to read the mag in the shop, so I am usually disappointed as it frequently only takes me a few mins to read it. I have to say that LF has gone downhill in editorial terms (as opposed to advertorial & advertising) over the 2 years that I have been reading it. As I don't want to buy a house in France (just Live there) then there is little to appeal to me. Then again, I may not be in their target market. If it wasn't for this Forum (which seems desperately overdue a software update) I wouldn't bother with LF. That said none of the competition is much (read as "any") better, IMHO. Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  21. LAST EDITED ON 26-Nov-03 AT 03:31 PM (GMT) Hello I suggest you duck ........... NOW! Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com PS. Why has the circulation of LF gone down so significantly since you (Archant) took over? Why can I no longer get it from WHS in Malvern or Portsmouth ferry terminal. No, I don't want a bloody subscription....
  22. This is a real can-of-worms post - nothing wrong with that, but expect to be accused of fence-sitting, or doom-saying unless you are going to give us the benefit of your own opinions, you fence-sitter, you..... Education is suffering in the same way, to varying degrees all over Europe (the world over, indeed). I rather doubt that good republican (or Republican) values will make much difference when the problem is simple - money. I doubt if one can cure classroom violence without throwing money (and lots of it) at the problem, unless one feels like curing the underlying social problems that are the cause. I am often heard to say that there is little point in fixing the symptoms (of anything), if you can't fix the cause. Violence is a cancer - treat the symptoms and you simply move the pain elsewhere. Without trying too hard to over-simplify the issue, whilst Western governments spend huge proportions of their GDP on war-mongering, there will be NO money for education (or health, or welfare...). That said and in *my experience only*, French schools are light-years ahead of their English counterparts. Discuss. >France's centralised school system must become >more flexible, he added, arguing >that "all too often, equality >of opportunity is translated simply >into uniformity of education offered. >The job of schools must >be to provide each pupil >with the key to his >personal fulfilment." Fine words, but the UK national curriculum, introduced in the early 90's was meant to achieve that - what a farce that turned out to be. It would be funny if it was not for the fact that it is our children (an consequently grandchildren etc etc) that "the system" is letting down. My family is well out of it. Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  23. Aside from the fact that one (I) can't get it any more, unless one subscribes; which I won't. The 2 places I regularly bought a copy, WH Smiths in Malvern and Portsmouth ferry terminal don't seem to keep it any more. Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  24. We needed nothing more than his (3 yrs) passport for the local school to photocopy and sight of his NHS "red book". Didn't even want our signatures, they asked us to write his name in the register because the couldn't get their heads around a boy called "Daniel" rather than "Danielle". French schools are IMHO so much better than UK ones. Sweeping generalisation I know, but that is my experience. Sorry. Have posted something along these lines in the Western France forum (for some obscure reason). Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
  25. >It sounds from this forum that >it is almost impossible to >run a b&b as a >sole source of profit. Is >this the case? That's what "they" say. Although every case is (bound to be) different. Only you can do the maths. >What is the difference between b&b >and chambre d'hotes. Nothing ....... Is it >also correct that more than >6 rooms classes as a >hotel. Yes, although I thought is was 5 (letting rooms). Nick http://www.aplaceinfrance.com
