1. As mentioned above, speak to an accountant (if you set up a company, you will need to anyway). BUT, companies cost alot of money (in both set-up and maintenance, mostly to acountants) and I doubt if it would be easier than registering as an artisan (not that registering is easy....).
2. Hello Bob Most (read all that are worth it) contracts are for 12 months (and you frequently need to specifically cancel the contract, usually at 10 months, otherwise they will automatically renew it...). Have you got ADSL at your place? We are still waiting (although we are promised 10/11/04 - here's hoping).
3. I suspect that this depends on any number of factors; What part of the country are you in? How large is it? Can it be seen where you propose mounting it? Are you within 500M of a church? etc etc. Best bet is to ask in your Mairie, or just put in a Declaration de Travaux & see what they say. I doubt if you would need "planning permission" per se (permis de construire), a D de T may be required (we would need one as we are overlooked by the church). My experience is that it always pays to ask; regardless of what you want to do...... I makes the Mairie feel needed (or at least it does with ours!)
4.
Try and do it outside, wear a good mask and sand it down. If your sanding inside, keep the mask on when sweeping up. Not sure about burning it off, presumably the fumes would be less than healthy. O...
I don't think that sanding lead paint is recommended. The "normal" method is chemical strip, or where the paint is sound, overpainting. However, FWIW, I reckon that, like NVCJD, the damage is already done to us adults. The affect of lead is accumulative and is reputed to dull the intelligence, I gather - much more significant in kids. Personally, I think that it is just more nannystateism. Einstien's house was probably painted with lead-based paint.
5. There are ISP's who won't "talk" to each other; e.g. I am with Tsicali.fr and I can't email AOL. Who are you & her using? Create a "hotmail" account & try emailing her from that.
6.
Thanks Nick, this information is useful.. Just one more question, as long as we tell the ferry company the furniture is ours I take it we can still travel as ordinary passengers and not freight. A...
Indeed so. I have been having this discussion with "redcap" in one of the others forums (or is that fora?). If the goods belong to you and you are not carrying them for reward, then you can travel as a passenger, rather than freight (you can still travel freight if you wish, but I can't see why you would want to; When I chacked, it cost more and you could not book more than 2 weeks in advance - on BF at least, and it cost more). Happy moving!
7. The Val de Loire, I suspect. Pity, 'cos I always liked the Bretagne. Food much better - important.... Tried new booking WS, nice flash graphics, but no quicker & I missed the FPOC registration bit, too. Have always booked with BF on line and shall continue to do so.
8.
Or do you mean can you still claim UK allowance whilst living full-time in France?
I suspect so, to which the short answer is no. Even if you are still paying Tax/NI in the UK, but not living there. Same for WFTC etc..
9. You are at liberty to bring whatever you like into France (give or take a few restrictions re: illegal substances. animals and foodstuffs, etc.). There is no paperwork required, at either end. A ferry Company will want to be assured that, if you are carrying the stuff yourself, that it does belong to you (this is about the difference between passengers and freight, rather than and restriction on carriage).
10. Nothing to do with my earlier reply, but, if I try to access the level above this one; "Living France Magazine"  from the front menu, I get this; Server Error in '/' Application. Java really is a pile of Poo... Haven't I heard that MS aren't supporting it any more? Isn't Sun suing them?
11. Uhmmm............ I can only go on my experience, as is mentioned above. I don't actually understand your question.
12.
Not in my IE it doesn't! (Probably my fault for having a Mac again... I must stop buying good computers).
I'm afraid, Dick that whilst most Macs are excellent, they only really excel in a limited range of areas (which is why they are universally popular in Graphics). Javascript itself is an out-of-date pile of poo, which has "issues" with most Microsoft OS's, so what chance do you have? 'fraid I shall call you a plonker for buying a Mac (I presume that you paid over the odds for it) & stick to my throw-away PC's. If it don't work, don't fix it, **** it.......
13. Having delved very deeply into this (we are in a similar situation) I have to say that I am not convinced. The USSARF and my (French) accountant say that this approach is illegal. It can be "legalised" for a "one-off" project (as we are doing), but for run of the mill, day-to-day, cliche-to-cliche work, then you must be registered with the French authorities. Fin. What I also fail to understand is why, when people up sticks and move 1/2 way across Europe, knowing (and I am sure that everyone knows) roughly how the system works, they try to con the French out of what is their rightfully theirs. If you want to avoid taxes, move somewhere third world, buy an AK47 & you can steal from, or con whosoever you wish, 'till they shoot you...... Or stay in the UK, 'till someone shoots you.
14. Nonsense! A 7.5T on BF Portsmouth-St Malo works, I know because I've done it. The length is not an issue, nor is the private vs frieght matter. P&O are P&O and may have different rules, but they don't go to StMalo anyway & we were not discussing them! BF are always helpful to people with "special needs".
15. BF usually only use email tickets (to their FPOC members at least), without problem as far as I am concerned. All you need is the booking ref when you turn up at the port. 12MPG was what I got! (The Hire Co said 17, and I am not lead-footed!) Tachograph not required (although you can use it if you want to) as the usage is private. Sorry I did not get to this earlier, but I spent all day today getting home... via Ryanair.
16.
It depends where you are: The legal age of consent for anal sex between a man and a woman in England and Wales is 18 years. In Scotland, it is 16 years. In Northern Ireland, it is illegal; ...
Did you look that up, or did you already know? If so, why? Actually, I think I'd rather not know.....
17. Hello Bob It was early January (I was loading at 11pm on New Years Eve!). Ordinary (email type ticket). Not a blink from the check-in chap at Portsmouth, or the loaders. As if I was in the car, really. It was a 7.5T Iveco @ about 6.9M long (had a tail lift), height was well within spec. As I said above, chap at St Malo on return trip wondered why I was in passenger queue, but was quite happy when he looked at my ticket. Saved me alot of money, "doing it myself" (£500 for van for 4 days, £250 ferry - remember it was January, plus fuel - at about 12MPG). Where abouts in 22 you moving to?
18. I've done this, from Portsmouth-St Malo. Booked by 'phone (rather than online) and they were very helpful. They just wanted me to confirm that I was not carrying "trade goods" ie. it was my own furniture that I was carrying. Marshall at St Malo on return trip was suprised that I was not frieght, but sent me through the car embarcation channels. Was loaded/offloaded last, but not much of delay. Quite cheap, too. There are advantages to travelling freight (have you seen the drivers lounges?), but it tends to be more expensive.
19. Does the size of font that C4 decided upon reflect the size of Kirstie's whatever? No, that is not fair. She is filmed in 4:3 and you are watching her on a widescreen telly. Sonia off Eastenders is the same...... And just how camp is Phil Spencer?
20. For pity's sake, we are talking about cars here! With the exception of a few hypercars, they are just a means of transport. We all need a car (in France at least) & most of of have at least one. It matters not one jot how big the car is, because in your average city centre all cars are too big. As for "gas guzzling", those whose vehicles use vast quantities of fuel (there haven't been any gas cars that I am aware of since WWII) (which includes most of them) pay for the privilege through fuel taxes - rather disproportionately, I would suggest. If one is offended by vehicles, perhaps one should try using public transport, where it exists. This is the 3rd millennium and progress towards large vehicles is just that, progress. It is up to the powers that be or society itself to develop so that progress can be accommodated. Or should we all be Luddites? If you want to reduce congestion, save fuel, whales or whatever, buy a motorcycle.... My 4x4 (certainly NOT a L/R) tows a 2 ton JCB. What could I tow with a Micra, or a Scenic, or a 405, I wonder. I use our Clio for driving into town.
21. Hello The easiest method (and the one used by most) is to get your Solicitor to send the money to the notaire's bank account (or do it yourself). The Notaire will have all the account details to hand. Takes about 3-4 days and will cost you between £10 & £35 depending on who you bank with. Some Notaire's will take a cheque, but it isn't guaranteed. There are cheaper methods (HIFX, Moneybookers, etc), but they take more organising & for a 1-off your bank will be easier/more reliable. You won't need a French bank account to pay for your house.
22.
I'm thinking about getting a telephone connection but don't know where to start as its not something I expected to have much need of. I'm assuming we have a line to the house as there are slots in th...
There is only 1 provider really; France Telecom. They will have an office in your local town, simply visit and they will sort it for you. Telephone service ain't particularly cheap here, especially for light users. Have you considered using your mobile instead?
23.
(If the probe is out of the ground, the resistance will be infinite. If you bury an infinitly long probe, then I guess the resistance must be zero....???) I suspect it is a law of diminishing return...
Indeed so. In the "law of diminishing returns", at infinity the return is zero......
24.
I would try to beg, steal or borrow (now there's a cue for a song!) a proper earth resistance tester otherwise you will never get a true reading. If you are having a Consuel inspection then it is impo...
Hello Paul What is the actual spec for earth resistance? I guess it is 100R @ 1M, but at what "depth" for the test probe?  (If the probe is out of the ground, the resistance will be infinite. If you bury an infinitly long probe, then I guess the resistance must be zero....???) There must be a defined spec, therefore... Eh? Yrs, confused....
25.
Elephant? What are you trying to tell us, Nick?
Well.... Truth of the matter is that I don't know any rude words. I was just trying to be big.
