  1. End of last week it was 86 centimes per litre. It may well have gone up to 88 centimes by now. That is the supermarch price, in garages over 90 centimes. ian
  2. I have found the French system excellent. I have been in hospital here five times, each time under the knife, and the professionalism and the care have been faultless. On one occasion I was referred to a specialist by my GP, seen the same day and admitted to the clinic that evening. I have a scan every six months after a cancer problem and a follow-up check with the oncologist. If I need a blood test I go to a local lab and get the result the next day. I have been in three hospitals and usually in a double room, never a communal ward. I have friends in the UK who have to wait for weeks, even months for a scan and for treatment ian
  3. We lived in a heavily-wooded situation in Morbihan for ten years and we had frequent problems with bronchitis. Since moving to a small town a few miles away we have had no problems. We attributed it to pollen and also to the breakdown of vegitation in the forest. ian
  4. You can ask the EDF to give you a temporary supply while you are renovating, if the property is not wired. If the property is already wired you can get the EDF to connect you straight away. However a new installation has to be inspected and approved before the EDF will connect. You can do a search on this forum to get more information, as the requirements of the French system differ greatly from the requirements in the UK and I guess from those in Ireland. ian
  5. You can use the Character Map in Windows. To find it go from Start to Programmes, then to Accessories and then to System Tools. If it is not there you may have to install it using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. I keep the icon on my desk top as it has the characters which are not present on my French keyboard. You copy and paste the characters into your document. ian
  6. We used Biard of Hennebont: phone 02 97 85 04 04. They were competitive and stored in a container for about 6 weeks. They did give us a few surprises when they muddled up our dates so be aware of that. Get it all down in writing! One of their competitors did not store in a container and were much more expensive. ian
  7. >Secondly (much smaller thing), I have >been asked for a 'carte >de groupe sanguin' to bring >with me on admission. >How do I go about >getting one or proving what >my blood group is? See your generaliste and get a prescription for a blood test at a local lab which will then provide the carte. This prescription was given to me when I had a pre-med at our local polyclinique some weeks before the operation; I am surprised you were not given a prescription then. It was for a more detailed test than just for a blood group. I also had a prescription for elastic bandages at the same time. I cannot help you with your first query. My surgeon was recommended by my generaliste and I saw no reason to doubt his judgement. ian
  8. In our small town you can buy or hire them from the pharmacie. In larger towns there are specialist suppliers for such equipment Look in the yellow pages for Handicaps: matrial et services pour. We bought ours as we are just going in for a third knee job! Good luck! ian
  9. We have a boiler which burns wood as an alternative to oil but so far we have only used it with oil, a large device incorporating the hot water storage. The burner should ignite when it is switched on. Ours has a trip on it and maybe this has cut out in your case. We have recently had a new burner fitted as we had trouble with it tripping.
  10. Item on BBC Web Site EU medical card 'by 2004' Millions of people across Europe will be able to apply for a new EU medical smartcard from next year. European Union officials have announced plans to introduce the electronic health card in June 2004. The card will replace a variety of forms, such as the E111 form, which entitles holders to free emergency treatment in other member states. The move is part of efforts to make it easier for people to travel and work across the 15 member countries. Form filling At the moment, people have to fill out a wide variety of different forms depending on whether they are on holidays, studying or working. These forms entitle holders to emergency care and medical treatment on the same terms as nationals of the country they are visiting. The smartcard aims to cut bureaucracy by simplifying the process. It will, for example, allow patients who have to pay for their health care abroad to be reimbursed more quickly by their own social security system. Over time the card could become a kind of medical passport entitling holders to medical care anywhere in the EU. Governments are currently considering proposals to allow citizens to seek medical treatment in any of the member states. EU Employment and Social Affairs Commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou said the smartcard would make life easier for people. "The European health insurance card will make it easier and quicker for EU citizens to obtain health care when staying temporarily in another member state," she said. A summit of EU leaders on March 21 in Brussels is expected to give final approval to implementing the smartcard. Story from BBC NEWS:
  11. I think it was Billy Wilder, the film director, who was on a trip to Europe when he got a request from his wife to buy a spray-bidet. After a while she got a telegram, "Unable to find spray bidet. Suggest hand-stand in shower". ian
