1. This forum is pretty good in comparison with another widely used Forum which has Zero Tolerance (quite a few of my postings have been pulled, but I accept it as I have agreed to the code of conduct) and I am sure most forum members will know which one I am talking about! I feel safe on this Forum as thanks to the rules abuse and bad language are not tolerated but you are given adequate freedom to express your views.
2. This makes sense Catalpa, and that's what they were probably up to. I will ask my neighbour who visits his property every few days to have a look  out and tell him what you said because he was surprised that nothing was stolen. Thank you for your good advice regards the radio too. And the grills are a good idea.  What worries me a bit is that we now closed all the shutters and it looks even more deserted.
3. Just come back from our Holiday Cottage in 14/16 and we found that we have had a break in. All our windows have shutters apart from two small ones in the bathroom/toilet. They must have hit the window frame with great force as it pulled off the catches (?). But I don't think they entered, nothing was missing (or perhaps our stuff is so old fashioned they were not interested). Anybody had a similar experience? (We now have bolted the two doors from the outside and we wondered if perhaps it would be a good idea to put one light on a timer? Any advice?). Chatelier 14/61
4. Oh sorry, missed page 4, I am glad there was a happy conclusion.
5. What an amazing story, I feel a book coming on!. Keep us posted
6. I think the English and Americans are obsessed about it and I think it is good that she makes a stand and perhaps even succeeds to make it a "fashion statement". In the film Titanic there was a shot of a pencil drawing with a Lady with hairy armpits, and half the cinema errupted in cries of disgust, admittedly they were quite young.
7. Your ending, Frenchie, would certainly please 5-element and woolybanana !! To anybody who loves listening to french stories, fairytales etc. I found another excellent site: http://www.lepointdufle.net/litterature.htm
8. I have found this website, it's great if you want to read fairy tales in French. And it also answered part of my question above! http://users.skynet.be/sky42184/
9.
It's just crazy.  But, on the other hand, life's like that.  We try but we don't connect and we call it a day. I think that's what it's all about.  We love each other, we can't agree, we agree to part in a more or less civilised way but we may or may not get together again in the future.  What do you think?
I could not agree more with you sweet, you said it all. Yes thanks Clair, I am going to print it out and take it to our reading group. I was just wondering as the poet is male and it's written in the "first person", perhaps it is the end of a relationship between two men?
10. I think you got it all wrong[:D], she has finished with him and agreed to see him one last time (87 % of women finish relationships, men muddle along!). Of course she cries at the end because it is sad to end a relationship.
11. I felt exactly like you Nectarine, and I thought there must be an easier way to say it, in German it is a simple reflexive verb "Ich freue mich", does that really not exist in French which seems a very "round the houses way" to say I look forward. But thank you anyway!
12. I am so sorry, we always have had Labradors, but any animal dying leaves such a big gap. We have had our share of grief two years ago with our Lab and our two cats dying (of old age-but we had to make the decision, which is so hard and makes you feel so guilty). We have been so shocked that my husband will not hear of us having any animals ever again. But I feel that the pleasure they give you during their lives greatly surmounts the heartache at the end.
13. jimmytaktak I have two questions: What is the easiest way to say: "I look forward" and "Don't worry". Both sentences I know are a real "mouth full". Unfortunately I can not help you with your English as I am a foreigner myself!
14. And being an insomniac [:D]!!!! Thank you to all of you. I like the ending with the many children!
15. One of my favourite things is, when I go for "boring" walks alone, to translate fairly tales into French (ready for when my neighbour's little boy is old enough to listen to them!!) I know, I get a few funny looks, because I talk to myself!! What is a fairy tale in French? The dictionary says: un Conte de fee, but is there another name? I know how to start: "Il etait une fois", but then how do you end it (and they lived happily ever after). At the moment I am translating "Haensel and Gretel",  perhaps somebody would know what the witch says when they eat from the house, I only know the German: "Knusper knusper, knaeuschen, wer knuspert an meinem Haeuschen", I neither know the English nor the French (and would be interested in both).Thank you for your help!
16.   I forwarded the posting/picture to my son who is a Mining Geologist and studied at the Camborne School of Mines, that's his explanation. 1) More likely it is as result of 2 near vertical joints (line of weakness). Erosion has exploited these two lines of weakness hence the creation of the zawn (Sea cave) as we know it Dorset. The flat surfaces of each side of the cave are in fact the surfaces of the geological structures (joints).  There are two more on either side of the cave and the joints actually continue above the cave too. 2) As the reader said, it is unlikely to be mining as it is slate and better extracted from surface quarries than from underground. It could also be aliens!!
17.   Yes, I think we keep the house in Normandy but move away from the South Coast of England  (all these leaked radioactive rays are bound to come this way)
18. I will take part too as a Swiss citizen living in England and somtimes in France and Switzerland. 1. Have you ever been in Germany? What was your impression? It's very clean and very well organized, it's a beautiful and varied country. 2. What do you think of when you hear Germany? Beautiful food (cream cakes!). Beer. Cars. Best dressed people in Europe. 3. Do you like / dislike Germany and/or the Germans? Why? They are very polite and correct perhaps a bit too serious. I think they do have  a chip on their shoulders because of the war. You have to be very careful what you say. They can be a bit too outspoken, they seem not to have as much tact as the English. 4. Characterize the Germans as far as possible. Very well organized, extremely capable in every aspect of life. Well groomed. 5. Do you think there are more prejudice against Germany than other countries? Why? (If you know a prejudice or stereotypes concerning Germany or the Germans please post them, too.) I think there are certainly more prejudices against Germans than any other European country because of the two World Wars. I am for instance interested to see the reaction of the ordinary French person in our little village in Normandy when I take my German friends to our Cottage. And I ask myself this questions would the French be prejudiced because they have suffered a humiliating occupation during the war? The Swiss certainly are perhaps least prejudiced against the Germans because they did not suffer during the war and they feel closer to Germany because of the language.   I would be interested in the outcome of your research! Good luck!
19. We have a friend who had a very noisy neighbour: one day he recorded it all and one quiet night played it all back. He still lives in the same house and it did help. What about doing the same.? Have you got a powerful System otherwise borrow one!!
20. Sorry Renaud, we must have been writing this post at the same time with you being a bit quicker in posting!!
21. Your question brought to mind yesterday evening's programme on ITV 1 "Holiday Homes from Hell". Did anybody see it and what exactly did go wrong there, the English Couple signed on a Chateau in France, they paid and then after they renovated it all they were evicted,  apparently they had a vital document missing? But it was never really explained what exactly went wrong. Such horror stories make you more careful and perhaps an English Solicitor would not be a bad idea.
22. We have wall mounted Electric heaters with a frost setting (our Project Manager suggested them) and we are very happy. We only use them as "back up" heaters because our woodburner heats our whole cottage. The De Longhi heaters are OK as a stand by but I think if you come to sell your cottage in the future something more permanent would be a selling point.
23. This is a great new Forum, a really easy to use and good clear "lay-out".  I have just registered. Now we just need some good discussions!
24. Yes it is a piece of flexible pipe I need and I am glad you told me that they come in various sizes, as I wanted to fit a piece which I had cut of from my Tumble Dryer and it was too small.
25.
Info here http://www.ideesmaison.com/La-VMC-ventilation-mecanique.html
Thanks for that, that's a very useful site. It looks like there is a piece missing on our Ventilation Unit! I wonder where I can get it?
