After a absolutely horrific experience, involving the preparation on one of the special courses, in a restaurant in Ghongzhou on a business trip. There is no way I would never, ever go into a Chinese restaurant in China outside of the tourist areas. I still have nightmares about what I saw. I actually walked out and refused allow my company to deal with that customer, purely for personal reasons. Very unprofessional.

I get on fine with most of the industrial estate Chinese banquet type places.

Mmm it's weird that the thread above this one is entitled " Missing Cat"  [6]

Which just goes to show that at least 2 French so called electricians either dont know or dont give a rats **** for the normes.
Yes always makes me laugh on these forums when people say " I only ever use French electricians/ artisans: tradesmen etc" , and berrate the Brit artisans . I have been working here as a sparky for 13 years now and often team up with other French artisans . Our local village sparky is the worse culprit - when I had the oportunity to work with him, I noticed he'd crammed 11 x 2.5mm  wires in a single 20mm conduit !! ( the maximum allowed is three!!) . When I told him wasn't it against the normes ?, he gave me a gallic shrug and mumbled some patois  saying that he's always done it that way, and what do YOU know being a foreigner.

I go on at least one course a year and attend regular Consuel/Promotelec workshops, - I don't think he does -lol !!

For the OP, it's the usual thing here to put sockets directly behind aplpliances and under the sink is fine. Switched spurs above worktop (as used in the Uk)  are not used here. As most appliances are wired on their own circuits, it is easy to isolate them by their individual circuit breaker back at the tableau electrique if needed.

  3. Thanks Russethouse, you've hit the nail on the head actually. Without going into personal details my situation has taken a turn for the worse and replies like the one from Polly are not helpful in my current circumstances. It's amazing how people assume !

Many thanks to all those that have replied with some excellent advice. Looks like the problem can be solved with a combination of a hopper feeder and a friendly neighbour (if I'm lucky).

    Thanks again.

  4. Hi I often need to go away for a week at very short notice, and was thinking of using an automatic cat feeder for my very independant cat who spends most of it's time outdoors. Does anyone use one and could recommend make and models and any advice tips please ? Also where to buy in France?

  5. Buy a Zibro and preferably one that plugs into the mains. These have a small powered fan that distributes the hot air and we find it very efficient. Incidentally ours       ( and I think all the latest models ) can be set right down to 6°, so you can set them on "tickover" when you go out by a simple button push. You can also program them to come on by using the inbuilt timer function. They also have child locks to prevent tampering.

  6.
I've just had a call from a friend asking why I haven't replied to her email - hotmail of course. But I did 2 days ago and nothing has bounced. We too are with Orange. Considering I pay them 30€ a month I think it shouldn't be beyond their wit to allow us to send emails to the largest group of email accounts in the world ! Do I really have to get another account and then search the addresses of all my contacts just so I can send to them from the second account !! I think not. In many cases my contacts are just listed by names - I'd have to open their contact record to know if they are with hotmail.

I'd be interested to know if this is going to be resolved and I will be preparing my best 'disgusted of Tunbridge Wells' response to Orange. [6]
100% agree with you there Greyman !

Although the replies have been very helpful, I would prefer that we can find a fix directly from Orange without having to set up new accounts and change email addresses. Please let you know if you manage to resolve the problem, and I will do likewise.

I cant help you with an answer Punch but the guy in my scuba diving club responsible for dispersing all communications asked me if I had got his last mail (I hadn't) he said it wasnt just me but all those with Hotmail addresses, today a test one got through, I dont know if he has found a solution or it has resolved itself, I will ask him next week.

He has had no problems sending mails to me for the last couple of years, only recently, I have in the past recieved many E-mails from Orange.fr addresses but of course dont know those that havnt got through, it could explain some situations in the past when I thought that I had been ignored or forgotten.
Thanks Chancer,

Yes I think it is a bit hit and miss wether people with hotmail adresses actually get all emails from Orange, but sods law some important emails I need to send to clients in the Uk this weekend don't seem to be arriving.  I think I could probably send them via the orange.fr messagerie service but it is a pain when my OE has been working fine beforehand.

  10. For the LEP in a bathroom, the local bonding earth wire only needs to be in conduit if 2.5mm earth wire is used. If you use 4mm or 6mm it can be run clipped direct or (any other suitable method) without the need for conduit to be used.

The type of Coffret de Communication used in a GTL depends on the date of the Permis de Construire. Without looking up the dates, Antons suggestion is perfectly acceptable for installations anterieur to this date using standard co-ax and PTT telephone cable. New instalations are required to have cat 5 or 6 wiring to all communication outlets ( TV, telephone etc) and then these outlets can be multipurpose.

  11. Are the pipes female by any chance ..........[6] Ok I'll get my coat .......

As has been mentioned I would first check that your water pressure is not too high - no more than 3 bars maximum. If you havn't got one already, install a pressure reduction valve. You could also try fitting an "anti belier" device which can stop vibrations when taps are turned on and off suddenly.

  12. Go into your live box settings page on your pc ( type in 192.168.1.1) in the address bar and see if the phone line is activated. If it is, then you can try a phone test - the instructions are there. This will ring your phone.

If that doesn't work try re-setting the livebox to it's initial config by getting the nib of a pencil and pushing the reset button on the back/bottom of the Livebox. if you do this you will need your login details  which is a number beginning with  vc/....... and the password.

When I had that problem the above worked for me.

  13. In my recent experience, CDG Terminal 3 is pretty crappy by European standards, just spent some time there ;  Impossible to get a Phone signal inside or even just outside the terminal building .I've never been in an airport where I can't use my phone.  Apathetic staff and expensive wifi which after paying for didn't work ( No chance of a refund either when asked) . It wouldn't have mattered if our flight hadn't been delayed for four hours, but hey ho .

  14. Andy, the box you have is a "boitier de derivation pour combles" or if you like in English it is a loft junction box.

    see here

They are very common and I use them sometimes when loft space is available to avoid having wall mounted junction boxes in the house. The one you have has been rather messilly installed and I would never install one that looked like that !

They are used quite a lot by us electricians in new house builds too; In fact if you have a copy of the L'installation Electrique book that everyone seems to talk about, you will see the demonstration of one being used. Although you quite rightly say sockets are often daisy chained, for lighting and switching the methods we use in France mean that junction boxes of any kind are essential in most electrical installations which is mainly to avoid having loads of wires at switches and DCL outlets.

    Hope that helps!

  15. Some things are just not available in France and why not shop Uk if prices are cheaper and customer service is often better ?

Whitewine here is a 5 floor shopping precinct of UK shops that deliver to France. Indulge yourself !

    Have fun !!!

    Paul.

  16. Yes I have to agree with Will. Chris Evans has had a rocky road in his media career to date , but watching him in recent interviews and on the Andrew Marr show this morning, he seems so candour and relaxed - the best I've ever seen him. I cannot think of anyone better to replace Wogan, and wish him well. He doesn't get to choose the music on his new slot and as he put it, will be offering the same format as Wogan but in a different way.

  17. Have another look at the pump by removing the filter and see if you can see the pump impeller inside. Try to see if the impeller turns freely.

When I worked as a service engineer for Miele many  years ago, one of the most common causes of washing machine failure was a blocked or jammed pump - Bra wires are a common cause - they slip out of bras and then work them selves down to the pump where they jam the impeller !

  18. There is no current legal  requirement in France to engage the services of an electrician and you are relatively free to do what you want in your own domestic dwelling, as the equivalent of  the Part P regulations, (unfortunately IMHO), has not yet reached our shores here.

However in the interests of your safety and for the safety of anyone who enters your house, I would strongly advise that you use a professional. There could also be insurance issues in the event of an accident or fire caused by a faulty electrical installation that you have carried out.

  19.
SANEF have nstalled an improved lane for doofer users at the Boulogne toll station. The doofer is read as you enter the lane so that by the time you reach the barrier it is already raised (so long as you stick to the 30kph limit).

Are these in use anywhere else? It's the only one on our route.

In answer to the OP's original question, the "télépéage sans arret" is available on several French motorways now. I beleive there are also some péages where you can approach at 50Km/hour without stopping. Let's hope the batteries are working in yours if you do try this out !!
