1. Many thanks for your reply. The frame is carved wood and we have taken it to a local restorer to replace the missing pieces. His estimate is quite high, but we appreciate the intricacy of the work involved. Now looking forward to seeing the finished job.
2. Many thanks. I have emailed you with a little more detail.
3. We have just purchased an antique mirror which has a carved wooden decorative frame. One or two of the pieces of carving have been lost. Does anyone know of a supplier of carved decorative frame work in France, or a restorer in sw France (Charente Maritime)?
4. We would like to tarmacadam a small area of our garden (about 20m2). Does anyone know of a contractor interested in a small project in southern 17 (near Jonzac)?
5. When this group was formed last year, Bill Ashbee was the first chairman. Not sure if he still is, but you can try him at:- [email protected]
6. Does anyone know where, in this region, one can sell quality English furniture? After many years of (happy) marriage, we have acquired more furniture than we need, but find that English furniture is often not to the French taste, and it would be too costly to ship back to England speculatively. Thanks in advance.
7. I am in Dept 17. The problem with free.fr is identical to that with sister company freetelecom.fr. However, if I dial the "numero de secours", I get through first time, every time. Only trouble is, I can't remember my password for the latter connection.[:(]
8. Exactly the same problem with free.fr as you describe. Sometimes (but rarely now) immediate connection, but most times it's a case of constant re-dialling. Record to date is 36 times before getting connected. Isn't there a web site somewhere which lists all the ISPs, charges, etc in France? Anyone remember its web address?
9. It has been reported very recently on another forum that pool alarms have now been "removed" from the list of approved safety devices. Can anyone confirm (or otherwise)?
10. Zeb, this really is my last posting on this thread. Your comments are becoming boring and repetitive. The 3%. The following is extracted from the Nation Federation of hunters own web site.  La Fédération Nationale des Chasseurs coordonne l’action des Fédérations Départementales et représente 1.450.000 chasseurs de France. As the population of France is around 55 million, that makes the hunters 2.6% of that number. I have been too generous with my figures. Selfish? No! Let the hunters have Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and the remaining 55 million of us can have Sunday. I did not say that I was shot AT. Some three years ago, I was walking our dogs in a public recreation area when a hunter fired at something in our direction. I heard the shot and immediately heard a load crack as his projectile (bullet? lead shot?) smashed in to a tree trunk just a few yards away. I went to examine the damage of the impact on the tree and then noticed a man, with a gun just across a river, running in the opposite direction. I can only assume that he was being totally careless and reckless and had presumably fired at something between himself and the public area. It was from that day onwards I became strongly opposed to shooting on the main leisure day of the week, and the selfishness of the tiny minority of aging hunters.
11. Zeb, I have re-read this thread and can find absolutely no substance in your claim the the "no hunting on Sunday" lobby has lost the argument. You keep trotting out the same old clichés about the short hunting season, the hunters' rights, and no danger except during a battue. In reply, most respondents have pointed out the "selfishness" of 3% of the population effectively dictating where 97% can't go on Sundays. So what about their rights and the selfishness of the hunters. After all, the petition which originated this thread is not advocating the banning of hunting, but only asking for a level playing field. 3% can hunt for six days a week for 20 weeks (120 days), whilst 97% can walk safely for 20 days. Not exactly a well balanced request, but still very much in the hunters' favour. As for battues only being dangerous. What a load of cobblers! I have personal experience of a shot from a very careless hunter, very narrowly missing me and my dogs when we were actually walking in a public leisure area.  I shall read any reply with interest and respect but only if it adds something new to the discussion.
12. Very interesting item about Jeffrey Quirk. Thanks for that. As it happens, he was featured on a BBC TV programme yesterday evening, which was covering the lives of four different English people who have moved to France. He was, at the time of filming, going around his neighbourhood trying to get the agreement of landowners to hunt across their land - and he did not seem to be meeting with much success. The mayor of Pau, seemed to be incensed by this gentleman's assumption that he could "ride to hounds" in France, stating that it was against the law - which I did not know, and am not sure is correct. So the news that the mayor had welcomed the enterprise seems to run counter to the impression on the film. We shall be joining the RAC - no, not the British one! Incidentally, next Wednesday evening is another BBC transmision reporting how French "emigrants" to Britain are faring. Could be interesting.
13. Zeb wrote:- "The problem with your argument is that you seem to want all the cake (52 sundays) you don't seem to want to share it with anyone else at all. Now that is being pretty greedy." As far as I can see, Chris (nor I for that matter) want all 52 Sundays for ourselves. We are perfectly willing and happy to share them with the 97% of the French population which does not hunt, say about 53 million in total. Now that's not exactly greedy, is it? On the other hand, the <3% of the population which does shoot, does want exclusive rights for 20 Sundays to vast tracts of the countryside. Now THAT'S what I call pretty greedy.
14.
Hello Seriously, you are asking to take 20 days off a already short hunting season which I think is unreasonable and you have not come up with a valid argument to change my mind. Regards Zebby Ps...
20 days must mean 20 Sundays, which is, if my arithmetic is correct a period of 20 weeks. Are you with me so far? Then, all six days of the rest of the week are avaiable for hunting which makes a grand total of 120 days available for hunting. Not enough? Zeb, in your earlier posting you say "Like all minority pressure groups you  are very vocal and very selfish." Don't you think that less than 3% (hunters) comprise a small minority presure group. Nah! I can tell from your various inputs to this thread, that you are "just 'avin a larf!"  Quad bikes indeed! Anyway, let's hope that enough people who have read this topic have now logged on to the ASPAS (French!) web site and down loaded and signed the petition.
15. Zeb seems to me to be very blinkered. As one respondent has said, this thread is mot about banning hunting, but about sharing the countryside equably. As it stands at the moment, less than 3% of the population have carte blanche to monopolise large parts of the countryside to the exclusion of many others who also work throughout the week to earn their leisure time. I, for the record, am a permanent resident of France and live in the heart of the country. I have signed the petition, as have my country born and bred neighbours, one of whom is the local mayor - so this is not just a Brit newcomer thing. A very large majority of French are anti hunting, but are simply not vociferous. This petition is simply to allow the 97% of the population, if they wish, to be able to roam the countryside freely without danger of being maimed or killed. In this area, hunting is permitted every day of the week and, despite the alleged 6 days working, guns can be heard both morning and afternoon on several week days in the season. As for the "hunters actually eating what they kill", this is absolute nonsense. Last year they killed 25 fellow hunters!
16. Ever wanted to walk or ride in the woods on a Sunday, but afraid of being shot at? ASPAS, and many other organisations are lobbying to make Sunday a hunt free day throughout France, so that all may enjoy the countryside. If you're interested, you can download a petition form from:- http://www.aspas-nature.org/petitionsaspas03/petitionchasse.htm or you can visit their site at: http://www.aspas-nature.org/   Good Hunting! Ooops! Sorry, good walking and riding.
17. If you have not already heard, a new Anglo French Association has been recently formed and initially based at Royan. Its aims are to encourage integration of the English speaking community into  French  life and also welcomes French memebetrs wishing to learn more about the English speaking world. Two meetings ahave been held so far, at which an embryonic committee has been formed as well as a Social Group, a Cultural Group and an Educational Group - with more in the pipe line. The second meeting attracted 43 "members", including five French people, with the expectation that many more will be coming on board. Following the first two "exploratory" meetings of the Anglo French Association, an exciting programme is now in course of preparation. You are all cordially invited to the next meeting, to hear what has been outlined and planned for you and, of course, for you to submit any ideas of your own for future events. The next meeting will be at 18:00 on 6th September at the Maison des Associations, Espace Pelletan, 61 bis rue Paul Doumer, ROYAN . For those of you perhaps too far from Royan, one suggestion open for discussion, is the formation of informal groups at other venues in or around Charente Maritime. So if you can make the 6th September at least, that will help the newly formed committee hear your views. Do come along. You will be welcome. If you are unable to attend, but would like more information, you may contact either Susannah Noble on 06 65 19 39 10 or the acting secretary, Bill Ashbee on 05 46 22 10 27.
18. Sorry, I pressed the button twice, but don't know how to delete this duplicate.
19. Les mûres sur la mur sont mûres. Verre, ver, vers (towards), vers (verse)
20. If you think that the TV presenters pronounciation is weird, how about the Brits who live in AKWITAYNE or, my favourite THE DORDOYNE? Why do the Brits always stick in an unnecessary THE? The Dordogne, The Gers, The Charente. I assume that they come from the Yorkshire or the Surrey. Thr French language requires the definite article, so that La Charente is correct - but not in English, otherwise it sounds as though one lives in a river - "J'habite dans la Charente".
21.
Jim and Gail I really cannot believe what you have just said. 'Some person in a pool shop said that you cannot use choc with a salinator.' I can't think why they would say that.... its just nonsens...
This is the first time that I have heard about salt water pools being phased out in other countries due to environmental reasons. Can you please enlighten me? I believe I am right in saying that some 90% of Australian pools are salt water (as is ours), and I would hate to go back to a chlorine pool.
22. Thanks Les - or may I call ou Derf? System Restore. If I do as you say, will it restore my system from the original XP CD, and if so, will all upgrades since be lost? Or is it just a simple(?) tidying up exercise which will not require any intervention nor muck anything up? The virus has re-appeared and is not being picked up by NortonAntiVirus every time, so I have to do a SEARCH for the offending files on a periodic basis and then delete them.
23. Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, I have not been successful in folowing your instructions.  Firstly, I could not find a reference to RESTORE under PROPERTIES of My Computer, so I skipped that part. Then I could not find the/a list of files after running REGEDIT to enable me to find and delete the two offending files. However, after looking at the web page you quoted, I do now know what this particular worm is trying to do. Strangely, the last two times I have connected to the Internet, Norton AntiVirus has not reported this worm again, and a search for the two files has revealed nothing. Has the virus gone away somehow, I wonder? Anyway, many thanks for trying to help me. It's probably my lack of software understanding that prevented me following your suggestions. Cheers!
