  1. Hi Miki 5 Bedrooms. What is the cost of joining G de F? Rgds Wilko
  2. Hi Miki I was told the other day that it has become law that a chambred'hotes can not be more than 5 bedrooms, if there are 6 it now falls under hotel regulations. Do you know if this is true? Rgds Wilko
  3. Hi Thanks to all of you for your responses on bed making. I notice towards the end of the thread discussion re Clevacances and G de Fr, shorter stays and fewer clients etc. When we started last year we decided not to join any of these organisations as I believed that the internet, which was little used by the french originally, would change the way people booked holidays. I believe this to be the case. The french are still somewhat wary of the i/net, half of them telephone to reserve and seem to be a touch astonished when we ask them to email us. We put our site onto a large Avignon based holiday site and last year, our first year, found that 80% of bookings came through it. This yaer the figure is down to 50%, 10% from free sites and the balance coming directly from our own site. However the one place i would like to be is in the Michelin guide rouge which has included c d'hotes for the first time this year. I feel that the 2 aforementioned companies are now seen, to some extent, as disposable middlemen because you can get directly to the owners via the i/net. Hope the seasons bookings are good. Thanks for the bed making Rgds Wilko
  4. Hi Do you make the beds and clean the rooms on a daily basis for your guests? Thanks for your help Wilko
  5. Hi Beryl & Miki Thank you for your kind words. Beryl we are a B&B, not a gite, but would be very pleased to receive either your goodself or your friends at Mas Pomona. Where abouts are you? Miki, how could you move from Manosque to St Malo? At the moment we have 24 degrees, blue sky and a gentle breeze, perfect and hopefullly another 6-7 months of the same ahead of us. I trust that you both have good seasons and if either of you are in the area a glass or two of rose slips down a treat on a day like today. Best wishes Wilko
  6. Hi Miki Thanks for that. We are in Provence, www.maspomona.com I take your points on board but what really confuses me is that the traffic through the site has remained constant throughout this slow period ie lots of people are still looking at the site. Rgds Wilko
  7. Hi Quillan Thanks for that, but only 22% of laat years bookings were from the UK. Rgds Wilko
  8. Hi For the past 6-7 weeks we have been receiving inquiries for holidays at the rate of around 4-8 per day. Howvere since 30/3/06 we have received nothing at all. Seems peculiar. Traffic through the site has remained constant  for the period. I have sent requests to ourselves via another email address and everything seems to be working. Has anyone else experienced this sudden fall off requests since  30th March? or do I have a technical problem that is not immeadiately apparent? Be grateful for any feedback on this problem. Rgds Wilko
  9. Anyone with a c d'hote in Provence beware a couple calling themselves Salavoufar, mid 20's early 30's, grey haird guy driving an Audi, 2 door in charcoal/black on a 13 registration plate. They have just done a runner having stayed 1 night of two. If you have the misfortune for them to arrive on your doorstep please take them in and please call me on 0490 71 24 48. Thanks wilko, en colere!!!!!!!

  11. Hi There! On a lighter note, we are having a competition for the usage of toilet paper. Over the past few months we have been astonished at the number of rolls that people can get through. The record at the moment is two complete rolls in 36 hours by one couple. Has anyone else noticed this? should we have a loo roll surcharge? Has Metro stocked up for 2006? We don't do table d'hote, only continental breakfast, so it's not our cooking. Anyone else noticed this type of usage? Rgds Wilko
  12. We have taken several bookings for the winter months. A number of people have asked for out of season discounts. However as the rooms are electrically heated it means that the overhead will be higher than during the summer months, therefore the profit will be lower. Is there a method by which one can charge the client for their use of electric heating ie some sort of metering system for each room whereby one adds this to their bill at the end of their stay or is there another solution. Pleased to receive your comments on this. Thankyou Rgds Wilko www.maspomona.com
  13. Hi There, This has been our first year, well 4 months, as a chambre d'hotes, the resultant bookings have been better than hoped for. When do would be clients tend to book for the 2006 season ie when should we run our advertising. Be grateful for any info on this from you experienced B&Bers. Thank you. Wilko www.maspomona.com
  14. Hi Lori We live in the Vaucluse. Like most of my neighbours we have a forage so unlimited supplies of water. In the case of Carpentras they have a canal that supplies their water.
  15. Hi there: I think that you are talking about Cavaillon melons, now trademarked. Dowhere I visit the Cavaillon M.I.N. and get the melons for free, they are either rejected (EU regs) or deemed not sweet enough for the market. They throw away tons of fruit every day, mostly because of EU regs. Consequently all the small farmers have the best fed livestock in the south of France. As a matter of interest what are you paying for raspberries? I ask because the small suppliers here are getting less than 1 euro/kilo, if they can sell them. Even with subsidies who'd be a small farmer? Rgds Wilko

  17. Food for thought: I don't think that you will get much of a pool for 15,000 euros. Secondly the installation of a pool adds capital value to the property, tho maybe not if it is a cheap plastic one. Other add on costs are landscaping, safety measures, an automatic cover will cost half as much again as the pool, cost of water and replenishment  for us around 200/300 euros per year, robot cleaner 1500 euros, and worth every cent. To prolong the season you will certainly have to heat it. No grants available for solar.Heat pump 6,000 euros. Here in Provence the temperature of the water is only 22 degrees so far, tho we have had a cool Spring. Without heating the season here would be June to end of October, tho for the latter months the pool would have to be covered at night. I think that in this part of France it is an absolute necessity to provide a pool for clients and ourselves. Rgds Wilko
  18. Hi: i have planted 6 choisyas, mexican orange blossom, which the book says are problem free! One has died and the others are looking malade. all the leaves are starting to go yellow from the bottom upwards. the only 2 things that I acn think of that might have caused this are overwatering or horse manure that was too fresh. the beds were dug to 2 spade depths, manure and grit added to top soil, the plants well watered in, however we had 3 days of heavy rain soon afterwards. they have been planted around 3-4 weeks. any help much appreciated Thnakx wilko
  19. Hello there, So you have opened your B&B and have emailed every person you know. However included in this list are probably family and friends. Question: do they pay or not? How do you cover this slightly delicate matter? Comments much apreciated. rgds Wilko
  20. Hi. BJSLIV. You are correct. The form sent to me was an error, it applied to hotels and not to chambre d'hotes. Apoplogies Wilko
  21. hi; anybody else received the "new" tv licence demand. in an ideal world I might have one personal set plus 5 for the chambre d'hotes, as yet we have only a a set for personal use. However if the other 5 were installed for the chambre d'hotes the bill would be in excess of 2000 euros. Ant comments??????????? Rgds Wilko
  22. Hi Arnold.  Thought you might like to know something regarding ourinns. A long lost friend, not been in touch for more than three years, put our names followed by Provence into Google. Up comes our ourinns website, numero uno on page one. You are an etoile. Rgds Wilko
  23. Have you joined www.ourinns.org....?
  24. SB Thanks a lot. RGds Wilko
  25. Some weeks ago there was an article in the Sunday Times about a chef that had returned his Michelin star and found that his trade had increased considerably. He had returned the star citing too much stress. I no longer have the paper and can't find the article in the ST archives. Does anyone remember the town/village where he is located. Be obliged if anyone can let me know his whereabouts. rgds Wilko
