1. Hello, and thanks for reading this post:

Our old house in 56 adjourns another house by way of a concrete pathway which is owned by our neighbour (the other house).

The path is actually attached to the wall of our house and is badly cracked with distinct holes in it.

Our neighbours' gutter for the entire back half of their roof drains via a single downpipe which empties directly onto the cracked pathway and subsequently drains down into what will be our pantry, flooding it when the rainfall is high.

At present the 'pantry' floor is just soil but we are going to concrete it shortly.

I'm concerned that a DPM and concrete floor won't keep the flood water out.

Our neighbough (English) is selling his house and has shown no inclination to repair the path which causes the flooding despite our pointing out the problem to him.

I want to try and resolve the issue amicably and without rancour - does anyone know the relevant laws/regulations regarding flooding caused by someone elses property?

  2. Oh Miki,

I can't believe you just said that about Barsac !

Jesus Christ man, you are a recognised expert in the field of proper beer (Fuller's) so you should know a thing or two about drink.

Barsac (or Sauternes) must be one of life's great pleasures, surely ?

There will always be the Stilton vs Roquefort arguement with regard to decent cheese but there is no other wine in the world like botrytis attacked bordeaux white wines.

    Quite simply a 'one off'.

Come down and see me sometime and I'll give you a glass of Ch. Filhot that will knock your socks off !

We don't drink it with foie gras, by the way, but with full fat, loads of eggs and double cream creme brulee.

    Cheers,

    Alfa.

  3. Hello Jan,

Your problems with Norton come as no surprise.

It is intrusive and will slow your computer down. Truly horrible !!

So is McAfee, by the way.

I'm in the IT business and I have lost count of the number of machines I've come across which have been messed up by these two programs.

My view is that the best, cheapest and least costly (in terms of resources) setup is AVG anti virus, with Adaware and Spybot to sort out the malware/spyware etc.

If you are running XP the inbuilt firewall is adequate, if not use Zonealarm.

All these utilities are free and please don't be put off by people who infer that because they are free they are somehow inferior - they are not.

All my computers are protected by AVG/Adaware/Spybot, I'm online pretty much all day everday and I simply do not get problems.

    http://www.grisoft.com   (AVG).

    http://www.spybot.com

    http://www.lavasoft.com  (Zonealarm).

    http://www.adaware.com

or you can find them all in one place at http://www.webattack.com  just click on the freeware tab top right hand side.

I would dump Norton like a shot (it is notoriously difficult to uninstall completely without going into the registry, however).

    good luck,

    Alfa.

  4. So we are OK referring to St Amour as the old Coco then ?

I'm really pleased Coco is still around, I very nearly drove her away quite some time ago and I have always felt really bad about that.

I thought perhaps someone else had upset her.

    Good news 1

  5. Tresco, never heard of him, I'm afraid.

Katie, glad to know you are you.

It's a bonus having both you and Twinkle (and Tresco, Ab, Christine and the rest of the fun people who have contributed to this ridiculous posting )

Should we include Le Buffoon ?  Mais non ! Il est un Banquere de Barclays.

    Awful French, I know !

Jenny,  do you fly Lufthansa by any chance ?

  6. Sadly it looks as though Toga the baby penguin has perished; according to those that know he will not have survived 6 days without re-gurgitated food from his mum and dad.

Phoenix and I are very sad (we are in Portsmouth, unfortunately).

I'm thinking of putting out a local advert offering £1000 for the name of the bastard who stole Toga (I can't post what I would arrange for the scumbag), or I could perhaps offer £500 each for the imbecile's ears.

I'd gladly do it, too !

I hope you're feeling a bit better now. Never, ever trust a man with a beard. Dentist or not. All I can say is it's probably a good job he wasn't wearing a wig.

Make sure your solicitor doesn't have a beard.
Jesus Christ ! (He had a beard, so they say) I've never seen a beardist  posting before.

I say ; Never trust anyone whose name is that of a garden compost or who wears knickers fashioned from animals.

Of course the dirty beggar (dentist) should have worn a mask but think yourself lucky he didn't have a snotty nose !!

And yes..I have had a beard (stubble really) for the past 34 years.

And yes... I am thoroughly untrustworthy.

    Alfa.(only joking !)

  8.
Thank you IanI have Windows ME, so I don't think I can use MS Antispyware with it (Am I right in thinking this works with XP?)I have Spybot and Ccleaner so I will look at their Startup options. I will...
IMHO I would :

Ditch ME and definitely ditch Norton (Symantec).

    Both truly awful !!

For an easy life install XP with SP2, Adaware, Spybot and AVG antivirus (the last 3 can all be downloaded for free).

Do your PC housekeeping (spyware and virus checks, updates, cache clean and defrag.) weekly.

I wouldn't touch Norton or McAfee with a bargepole!

Or AOL for that matter ; all far too intrusive.

  9. Hello Maggie,

My wife has had Onspeed on her PC for several months having taken up the 'free' offer from BT Internet to install it.

It certainly speeds up a dial-up connection (it's showing a speed up factor of 4.46 whilst I type this).

The only slight glitches have been the occasional requirement to re-type the user name and password (of the ISP) and this has happened after a thorough hard drive clearout/defrag. etc.

    I think it's excellent.

  10. Miki,

    I'm not 'boasting' about anything.

TU asked a question and I have answered it, that's all.

I don't expect (or wish) you to agree with my habits (I don't agree with them, for Christ's sake) .

Enough already !  Please see my PM and let's stop this nonsense.

I'm sorry if I have offended, threatened, surprised or bored anyone else !

    I'm off for a large scotch !!!

    Mark.

  11. Miki,

    You are absolutely right.

Congratulations, you have overwhelmed me with the logic and good sense contained in your retort.......AND ...................

    YOU ARE THE WINNER !!

Lighten up ............It's good for your heart, (and your liver !).

    Mark.

PS. You are right about one thing - Fuller's London Pride . Best beer in the world !

  12. Coco,

Any chance I can come to yours for Christmas ?  Partridge.........MMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Seriously, (hope Miki isn't reading this) ... is partridge available in France (we are in Morbihan 56) ?

We usually have guinea fowl (in UK) for krissy dinner cos like you it's usually just the two of us but partridge has to be THE best.

  13. I've just had another look at a retort to my original posting and a question has arisen ................

Is an aperitif ( a whisky perhaps, or a Campari maybe), PLUS a bottle of wine and a nightcap each day a ridiculous consumption ?

I have to say that after 25 years of this regime my liver IS actually still working magnificently - maybe because it's used to this input and maybe because I don't 'binge' drink - the input is always the same, day in - day out.

I always thought I was a moderate and sensible drinker (my doctor agrees - bless her) so what do YOU all think and what do you all drink ?

You've got me terrified now Miki !- I'm thinking serious alco - or worse - someone with a life, god forbid. (god with a small g)

    Mark.

  14. OOOOPS !!!

I seem to have annoyed the ubiquitous Miki again.

My reply (Miki) was not meant to be taken seriously (I haven't been taken seriously for a couple of decades !!!)

Dick Smith, as always, is far more erudite than I and his posting is far more pertinent than mine.

(He also shares my taste in beer - Fuller's London Pride -beautiful !)

Also Miki,  Ray B is a good friend and my comment was something of a 'message' to him and I'm really sorry that you think you know enough about him to make derogatory comments when I'm quite sure you don't.

I'd have him on 'my side' any day.

Mark. (A somewhat bemused and pxxxxd off Alfa).

  15. My wife and I (Judy - or Phoenix when as she used to be when she could be bothered with this forum) have drunk at least a bottle of wine every day for the last 25 years. (EACH !!!)

We are now middle aged, not very fit but very happy.

Normally we will have a scotch, Campari, Kir or beer when we finish work - afternoon for Phoenix and anytime for me (!) and ALWAYS wine with dinner, which we eat in the evening.

    A 'nightcap' before bed.

As to types of wine : depends on what we are eating - plonk with spagbol and Chablis with Lobster Thermidor!. Always muscadet with cold shellfish and a decent Medoc, CDP or Burgundy with a bit of game. A nice Chateau Filhot or Broustet with Foie Gras or Creme Brulee !!

We go against the (French) grain with the cheese (Roquefort or Mont D'Or) - it must be port, not Sauternes or Barsac.

We still find outstanding wines in France for £2 to £3 a bottle (you do need to LOOK for them).

As for our livers (Miki) - long gone.

At the end of the day: we think wine should be compulsory with both lunch and dinner.

    Alfa.

PS. Ray B drinks scotch out of a half pint mug !!  AWESOME !

  16. Me too Val2 and Iceni.

I think it says a great deal about their motives for moving to La France in the first place.

It certainly wasn't to give their family (including pets) a better chance of a good life was it ?

The old greed creepng in again perhaps?

Phoenix and I would give our last morsel to our children and our pets (who we consider members of our family).

    Sad !

    Alfa.
