  1. Re:  printing off forms: We would like to print off the forms (that is the ones they did not send!) but having found the forms as described above find that we cannot get them to print. Anyone else had that problem please?  We use firefox. H.
  2. Sorry Gluestick - will remember that if I ever want to post a photo again.
  3. We had this problem but thought fast. We own a commercial property in the UK which is rented out so put that post code in but did not tick the box to change our address.  Seems to have worked! I got my repayment 4 days later. H. (Edit:  Online filing website says you cannot file online if you are non resident but I received a notice to deliver that says please do it online!! This actually arrived after I had done it but I have kept the letter in case my filing is queried later.)
  4. Thanks Russethouse.  That is what I did before but only the code appears in the posting and that is all I can see now.  I will "post" though and see if the photo appears.   (Edit: and  Photo appears - that is what I did not realise yesterday when only the code shows until you actually "post"..)  Mrs H Picture size edited by a mod
  5. Man came, looked at our roof and after lots of prodding (up a ladder) has said that they would not be willing to do the work with their coating product.  This is because our roof was "mousse" sprayed for insulation (by a very reputable UK firm who also worked in France) and therefore it is impossible to move any slates to replace broken/damaged ones which is what they do before applying the coating. Our roof does not leak and the tiles will not blow off but they do not look good which is why we wanted to coat them. Never mind - it was a good idea at the time. H.
  6. Apologies Gluestick and thank you! I have followed instructions as you gave them but no picture appears here.  I have tried several times.  When you right click over the words IMG code should I then select one of the items on the little menu (does not have copy or anything)?  I chose nothing just opened this forum and right clicked again to "paste" but nothing appears.  The actual code is next to the IMG word but if I copy that it just produces the code here in the posting not the picture. I am obviously doing something wrong, and any cries of "stupid woman" are well deserved. I  use Firefox if that makes any difference. Mrs H
  7. Thanks Clair for the very clear instructions.  We have a man coming this morning to give us a devis (see roof coating in Renovations) but I will get back to this this afternoon. Re my comment "you get what you pay for with machines" - we bought the Panasonic because Which? magazine said it was the best (this some years ago). Mrs H
  8. No more replies so obviously no-one has done this!    Yes WJT our slates are now porous (or so the roofer says...) It seems that the moss etc makes the slates porous so I don't think that deliberately making tiles look old is a very good idea! "Man" coming tomorrow to discuss this and give us a quote so will post again then. H.
  9. Well:  I have made a loaf and taken the photograph but:  even reading previous notes about how to add a photo I am just confused.  If I emailed the picture to one of the respondents above could they add it for me please? How dim can you get,  sorry. Mrs H
  10. We found a company at a "maisons et habitation" exhibition who were advertising and demonstrating a waterproofing roof coating for old roofs. The effect was certainly good to look at but we wonder if anyone has used this company and how satisfied they were.  We are fairly sure they only operate in the Brittany/Normandy area.  The website is www.technitoit.com. Private message if you prefer! H.
  11. I replied to an earlier thread on this subject but here goes again! I use a Panasonic machine bought in the UK about 7 years ago. When we first lived in France I had to import flour from the UK as it seemed impossible to buy bread flour here. More recently I have been using Carrefour own brand flour for "pain" and Yeast from the UK (I still have a small stock). To make a small(ish) loaf I use 400g flour and 1/2 teaspoon of yeast plus 1 tblsp each of milk powder and sugar. Then 1/2 teaspoon salt and 15g butter. Add 280 ml water last (most non-Panasonic machines are the other way round).. I can choose soft, medium or crusty . Result: a super loaf and never (I repeat never) have I had to struggle to remove the paddle which stays in the tin when the loaf is shaken out and can then be pulled out easily to wash when the tin is cool. I do not have a photo but could take one when I next make a loaf (early next week), although I have no idea how to put it onto this forum. If someone can explain this in simple words I will try. I think it is a case of "you get what you pay for" as far as the machines are concerned. Mrs H.
  12. Thanks a million Catalpa, we went last November and saw the queues.  Yes it is best to go nearer the end - we just walked in on the last day.  They take only cash or cheques - it is a factory not a shop so no tills etc. Well worth the effort though. Mrs H
  13. I know I read in our local "Gazette" a week or so ago that the Saint James factory (in St James) is having a factory sale but I have lost the details. I think it starts next week!  Has anyone details please?  I have looked on their website but no information.  I realise that I should telephone them but whilst I manage well face to face I find French on the telephone difficult. For anyone who does not know the shops, clothes are super but expensive and the factory sales are hugely popular. Thanks Mrs H.

    fabric

We don't live anywhere near 87 but have you looked for an Ikea? Very good, and cheap, furnishing fabric.  If you are looking for dress fabric though I find it difficult too! Mrs H
  15. Thanks for the two answers - will look at the ordonnance.
  16. Just as an extra point on this subject:  Should the blood always be taken in the morning (sans petit dejeuner as it were)?  My parents have an ordonnance for blood tests and we have told them they should go first thing in the morning on an empty stomach as this is what I was told a year ago by our local lab.  Dad says they have never done that before, although he admits they may have always gone in the morning so lab may be assuming no breakfast. It will be difficult for them if this is the case as my mother is unwell and does not get up very early.  Nurse route no easier as her "surgery" is 8.30 to 9.15 am. Mrs H
  17. I can well believe French CMU deductions are allowable in France but UK national insurance!!  In the UK the whole of the pension arrears would have been taxable as national insurance is not a "pension contribution" for tax purposes contrary to what was stated in an earlier posting. Mrs H. .
  18. Be interested to know if it works - have written the name down.
  19. According to the New Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales dated from the 1860's there is no such place as Blinsley, Great or otherwise. This gazetteer lists every locality in E & W no matter how small even if only 10 inhabitants. The problem with old census records seems to be that enumerators just put down what they were told so they could easily mishear or misspell a name. As an example my paternal grandmother who as far as I know had no connection whatsoever with Herefordshire is described in the 1901 census as having been born in Bromyard, Wiltshire! Bromyard is in  Herefordshire but I think my grandmother was born in Bromham in Wiltshire. The gazetteer lists a village called Brinsley (not great) in Nottinghamshire.  You would be able to find this in Google - it is about 8 miles from Nottingham on the Derbyshire border.  So if you have connections in that part of the world this may be the place. H.
  20. Thanks Jackie,  no I don't think food allergies are my problem (apart from coffee + stress giving me a migraine - one or the other alone is OK!!) Book is interesting though. I am interested in this "bombe' thing, but no replies from anyone who has used one.  We have no damp but all houses have house mites and I think the dust from beams, and dust etc falling down through the ceiling from upstairs is often the problem, especially as you say your symptoms are worse downstairs.  On part of our house the ceiling downstairs is the floor upstairs and dust certainly comes down. Hope you get some replies to original query. Mrs H
  21. Re Antihistamine and the comment above:  Mine is prescribed by our doctor here and I have regular check-ups, he is happy that I take it.  In the UK I just bought it in a pharmacy as at that time I was under 60 so no free prescriptions.  I have multiple allergies!  All animals, pollen, house mites and just "dust" - I cannot empty a vacuum cleaner or even dust a room without sneezing, and I do keep the house as clean as possible. Had all the tests as a teenager, had anti-sensitivity jabs which worked brilliantly for about a year but then... I have not tried these "bombe" things so cannot comment.  I do hope you get some relief soon,  I have an inhaler for when I get breathless. Mrs H.
  22. I always feel that my allergies are because of having beams in our (old) house, although if the picture of the cats means you have some then I should be really ill in your house!! I have antihistamine all year round, but needed that in the UK too in a modern house.  A hopeless case! Mrs H.
  23. We have recently had a Flex account cash withdrawal refused (in Canada) and there was plenty of cash in  the account.  I telephoned nationwide to complain and was told the visa system was experiencing problems and they had not blocked it. Person said to try the following day, which we did and no problem.  Try telephoning nationwide to ask whether they actually blocked anything - they can tell. It seems as though the "message" you get on machines is actually not always accurate.

    flu jabs

Answer from both "ages":  Just to say that husband is over 65 so his was free, "voucher" sent by post, I am over 60 but under 65 so I paid for mine, around 6 euros and 3 euros for the local nurse to administer it!  You do not even need a prescription - I just bought mine in the pharmacy. If you do not have a prescription the nurse will check that you have no health reasons to avoid jab - if she is unhappy I assume you will be told to ask Doctor. Easy as that. Mrs H
  25. Was it SNCF that would not accept card?  We have found that they will only accept French cards, regardless of address!  No-one else seems fazed and use nationwide card when needed as they do not charge extra to (very good) exchange rate. Mrs H
