  1. Having gotten fed up with the freight train roaring through the bedroom, my mother the nurse suggested that my hubby gargle for 3-5 minutes before going to bed. Believe it or not it worked! And of course he hasnt done it recently so the freight train and wind storms are back --- so its back to the gargling again whether he likes it or not! rofl "He who does not Question, Does not Think, He who does not Think, does not Know; He who does not Know, never truly Is." 2. I think the server is having some problems. The same has been heppening with me in the same thread (and elsewhere). I posted, it appeared; I came back the next day to read new posts and only saw the original post. Then a few days ago all posts had re-appeared. I had to send Eleanor a note about removing one copy of something I ended up posting twice because of the same sort of problems. So the team are at least aware of it -- but it will take time. Ifthere was something offensive about your post you would have heard from Eleanor about it more than likely! 3. >We moved to france in december >2002 and i informed the >benefits agency and they sent >me a form to complete. >I have just had a >letter saying that i will >continue to receive my long >term incapacity benefit whilst living >in france to my great >relief. Had to trust them >and it worked. So for >a change no problems with >uk rules and regs. I >will also get a E121 >for medical treatment. Well done and congratulations. It just goes to show that you dont really have anything to loose due to the reciprical EU/EEA agreements. I think it is always in one's interest to have the courage to at least find out what the options are. My husband just started receiving incapacity benefit. Believe me, if he is still on it when we are ready to move over we wont hesitate to do the paperwork for him. 4. LAST EDITED ON 26-Jan-03 AT 05:59 PM (GMT) Hi Libbie, Try looking at the Healthcare info on the Americans in France site --- http://www.americansinfrance.net/ ; I am not at the stage where I have to think about healthcare in France so I dont know how good it is... Regarding the UK ancestry: This seems to only apply to Commonwealth Citizens and allows one to go to Britain to work for up to 4 years (under the new rules I think, before that it was only 2) and then after that one can apply for permanent residency (settlement). It does not confer citizenship; you have to be a legal permanent resident for 4/5 years (3 years if married to a British Citizen) before applying for citizenship. Citizenship allows you to get a British/EU Passport which is the only way to get to France from the UK with "minimum" headaches. All in all the UK Ancestry route would take quite some time (I am an American married to a British Citizen and none of the immigration processes are particulary easy)... Links from the Nationality and Immigration Directorate (UK Gov) on entering Britain under UK Ancestry rules http://194.203.40.90/default.asp?PageId=108 http://194.203.40.90/default.asp?PageId=854 Best of Luck Lisa "He who does not Question, Does not Think, He who does not Think, does not Know; He who does not Know, never truly Is." 5. LAST EDITED ON 23-Jan-03 AT 10:38 PM (GMT) Lucy, Thanks ever so much for taking the time to let us know about all this. This in and of itself is most impressive and shows LF's dedication and appreciation of it readers. I have say that I do buy a number of similar publications, but none of them really compare to LF. The quality of the LF magazine, its research and practical information is second to none. The photography never fails to lift my spirits and set me dreaming. Most important, I find that LF really tells it like it is and with a lot more depth than similar publications especially on issues of everyday French living -- and that to me is invaluable. I save all of my LF issues. I also noticed that LF offers its readership the opportunity to write for the magazine; is this something that the new publisher will keep up -- my experience with larger organisations is that these kinds of opportunities would never happen for even the most dedicated of readers. Hats off to you all for having given us so much pleasure and for making reading about all things France fun. Warmest Regards, Lisa "He who does not Question, Does not Think, He who does not Think, does not Know; He who does not Know, never truly Is." Live and Let Live!!

  8. LAST EDITED ON 10-Jan-03 AT 01:46 PM (GMT) I think these problems are definately PC-specific only. I have been logging in today at work on my PC running Windows (shame on me). I have been attempting to log into the forum (5 times!) and kept getting messages that my login was wrong (it wasn't) -- at last I have made it so am able to post. Ive got a permanent red flag telling me that I have new messages when I dont -- the last message I got was about a month ago and it was read - twice! I cant get rid of it.... I keep trying to note that all posts are read -- no such luck. None of these things happen from the Mac at home...I am going to give our Linux machine at home a test run tonight to see how it fares...Windows is absolute rubbish! Lisa
  9. >Not sure if this is the >right section to put this >in but I can't find >one on 'working in France'. > >We are moving over April/July 2003 >and part of our income >will (hopefully) come from selling >Arts, crafts, and Upholstery. >Does anyone know how you get >to hear about 'Expo's' being >organised in your area? Are >there bodies that arrange these? >We are on the borders >of 86, 87 and 36. > >Any help would be appreciated >Paul Hi Paul, I will be doing the same as yourself when we can finally move - just minus the upholstry. From the information I have gathered the tourist office for region/locality and the city halll/council should be able to pass that sort of information onto you. There also should be either a local or regional equivalent to what we in the states usually refer a "Chamber of Commerce" (I think the UK Eqivalent is the same). In the area of Normandy that we have targeted, all of these things are available and we found them listed under the local government and tourist sites for the area (usually under "Economy"). Luckily enough they have an English equivalent of the site as my French is quite rusty! You also might want to talk to them about whether or not your area has programs in place for Micro Enterprises (which would include a crafts business; I have been told even if we did nothing more than have a market stall or a small shop we would still qualify as a small business). In our preferred area of Calvados the Marie and Council have a number of programs set up to help such businesses, including grants, free business advice and help setting up the business...all done in the name of helping boost the local economy. Its one of the benefits of paying French taxes apparently...but not without the usual bureaucratic idiosyncracies I am sure. But there seem to be a number of good programs in place which would be of use to you but it does depend on where you live. Good Luck and I would love to know how you get on. Warm Regards, Lisa
  10. >Can anyone tell me if it >is possible to view discussion >postings in correct numerical order, >I appreciate that at the >moment they appear to follow >previous postings that are being >replied to, but I find >it awkward to follow. As a web designer I totally agree with you. It is quite easy to resolve this and I have been very surprised that it hasnt happened; trying to read messages here is very fustrating and takes more time than it should.... But I think that not only should the thread list be in numerical order, there really should also be the facility to cycle through messages without always having to go back to the list. All that is needed is to have arrow graphics (or some such) linked to a bit of code that would allow us to cycle foward or backwards in a thread and/or jump to a particular message number -- these would automatically appear. Its really quite basic (see Yahoo Groups which has been around for ages)!! Lisa
