  1. We asked this very same question at our local tax office last year and were informed that if the policy was taken out before 1991 in England then it was not taxable. The person was introduced to us as the tax office's expert on English/French affairs. I hope she was right as we have acted on that basis LinN
  2. Having been to the Centre des Impots today, I can now answer my own question. I am posting the information in case it is of use to anyone else. If the policy was taken out before 1991 and the insured was under 70 at the time of starting the policy, then there is no tax to pay in France.
  3. My husband installed an English Bosch Worcester LPG boiler in our house when we were building it 8 years ago but we have always admitted that it wasn't the cleverest thing we have done. He isn't a plumber and hadn't done anything as ambitious before. In fact the place where he worked had a book running on whether the system would pass the stringient tests or not! It did take two goes to get it passed and we were very lucky to find a sympathetic maintenance company to do the annual service. Luckily (cross fingers, eyes, legs....) the boiler has been trouble free and it did save us money but we wouldn't do it again.
  4. Can anyone tell me whether the payout from a mature English endowment policy would be treated as unearned income in France? We have three that mature early next year but none have made a profit. Logic tells me that the payout will be less than the premiums paid in and therefore will only consist of earned income - but is this how the French taxman will see it!! Many thanks, Lin
  5. Here in the Cantal, sheds have to be three metres from any boundary. We have even been ordered to paint the roof the same red as our house roof! We are waiting to see if anyone comes to check as we rather like it the colour it is.
  6. I had this message too, and not knowing what an avatar was? I gave up. Can anyone enlighten me please?
  7. Thanks for your replies. I have sent my son the link for the British Embassy - that should keep him occupied for a bit! Today I went to the Mairie to ask if they had any information. Their gut reaction was that without a French Identity card of some sort (ie Carte de Sejour, even though not issued any more) my son and his fiancee would not be able to marry in France. The secretary is going to make enquiries for me anyway so I'll keep you posted in case it is of interest to anyone else.
  8. yeah, frustrating isn't it? I had to change my name from a simple Lin to LinN and lost my ranking - such as it was!
  9. I'm sure that this has been covered before but my attempt at searching the archives came up with nothing to do with marriage! We have lived in the Cantal for 11 years now and our offspring all love the area too. So much so that my son is expressing an interest in getting married here. He currently lives in England and is not likely to move here before getting married - unless he needs to, in which case we lose a bedroom! Can anyone enlighten me on the procedure, costs and any pitfalls there may be? Many thanks Lin
  10. I saw them in our local Florinand recently I'm sure.
