  1. Thanks for the info - I will certainly be doing our pud that way this year but don't think I will try doing it from scratch. Will have to keep it in the kitchen because once made a rice pudding, put the cooker in a room other than the kitchen and remembered it three days later. Surprisingly it was edible but a bit dry to say the least - I think we cut it into slices. Thanks again
  2. A friend has just recommended Halogen heaters to us as being quick to heat and cheap to run. They also give off a warming glow and you can buy them with remote control and timer. Don't have any personal experience of them but are definitely considering getting one.
  3. I love my slow cooker and find it great if we are expecting visitors and not sure of arrival time - nothing spoils. I never thought about doing my Christmas pudding in it Russethouse - what a great idea! How do you do it? Do you just stand the pudding in water and leave it? Would love to know.
  4. Hi You can also try www.pointsdechine.com and again, just search for your department Good Hunting Gill
  5. Hi We recently bought a Leclerc Sim and it works really well for us. It was costing us such a lot to use our UK mobiles when we are in France, paying to receive and send, and also we found french artisans and delivery people reluctant to call a UK mobile. We were put off getting a french Sim before because of losing the unused credit but the twelve month credit time more than makes up for the 1.50 euro monthly charge. We used it during our last visit and we were really pleased - it cost nothing to receive calls or texts from the UK.
  6. Thanks for the advice - very much novices where DIY is concerned Regards Gill
  7. Can anyone help? We have just stripped the wallpaper off our bedroom and discovered an old damp problem in one piece of plasterboard. There must have been a problem at one time as the plasterboard has a few lumps and bumps but it is completely dry now. Can anyone tell me how we can remove the lumps so that we can have a smooth finish ready to re-paper? I know that the probable solution would be to replace the complete piece of plasterboard but is there another option? Can it be sanded down/ removed with a stanley knife and a coat of smooth plaster applied? Am making this up as I go along so please be kind with your advice, Thanks Gill
  8. That looks great and the effect that we would like to achieve. Can you tell me how much it is to buy, where to buy it and what area one bag will cover. When we start on ours it is going to be done a visit at a time so having the consistent colour would be great. Thanks Gill
  9. Hi The website is here www.saint-maclou.com Can you tell me if the carpet tiles had to be glued down or was it possible just to lay them down. Thanks Gill Sorry - stupid question as you have already said that they can be moved around. Gill
  10. Hi Phylis Sky Channel 799 is TV5. The News is on at 7.30p.m. every weeknight for half an hour- long enough to concentrate! It is quite a good channel because on some programmes it gives subtitles in French - the only downside of that is that one reads the titles instead of listening. I think it is mainly a Swiss channel but they do have quite a variety of programmes.
  11. Hi Cathy Hope you are feeling better.  There is a free monthly newsletter that you can receive which always has a crossword in it. One month the clues will be in english and the next in french. It also has language exercises. It is sent by the people who publish the magazines "Rendez-vous" and La Vie Outre Manche. www.concordefrench.com/le_petit_journal/ Best Wishes Gill
  12. Hi We bought beds from Ikea on line a couple of years ago and had a stress free experience. As non-residents in France I arranged it all from home. If you go onto the website (Ikea.fr) and click on Vente en distance and then on English, you are guided through the whole process. There is also the possibility of speaking to someone in english if your french is not good. We entered the dates of our visit to France, ordered on line and were then given a telephone number to arrange the exact date and time of the delivery. The delivery van arrived within two minutes of the promised time. My only gripe is the cost of delivery which increases with the amount you spend - surely the more you buy should attract a reduction. Saying that, it was good to have everything on time as it is difficult enough to get things done on a short visit.
  13. Why are British people who go to live abroad are "ex-pats" yet people who go to live in the UK are "immigrants"?
  14. Hi I have followed this post with interest as we too have the same problems. Can anyone tell me how much the running costs are to keep the VMC going 24/7. Thanks in advance
  15. Hi Have you tried the websites for companies who provide camping holidays e.g. Canvas Holidays or Eurocamp. They usually sell off their caravans and I think I have seen that they have facilities to transport the vans to your chosen site. It may also be worth trying the sales pages of French Property News.
  16. Hi There is a Bricomarche which opened about six months ago on the outskirts of Autun at Bellevue. There is also a  Maxibrico in Arnay le Duc which although small is quite well stocked. Good luck with your DIY
  17. Hi We are in the process of buying a house in Burgundy which has a septic tank.  We know that you should not use bleach but can anyone recommend suitable cleaning products which will not upset things. Someone has told us that a regular dose of Eparcyl should be added - is this right. Any advice on the maintenance of the tanks please.
