  1. Hello, I have just received the prices from them:  1 bedroom/2 persons €240 2 bedrooms/4 persons €345 3 bedrooms/6 persons €530 4 bedrooms/8 persons €695 5 bedrooms/10 persons €845 6 bedrooms/12 persons €985 7 bedrooms/14 persons (with a suite) €1150   They don't publish until Feb 2009 next so I have plenty of time to consider it.  We are receiving a promising amount of bookings from our own site, which we too try to maintain frequently, and yes a lot of time boosting google ratings in the winter! Back tio the chalkboard!
  2. Hi Jo, I did email them to which they replied fairly quickly pointing me to the owner's page to see the costs.  In fact the owner's page tells you why they charge and how to pay but not the amount, so I have emailed them once again about 10 days ago and i still await their response.
  3. Hello everyone, As the season has slowed down to a very small trickle I was hoping to pick your nrains on where you advertise.  Does anyone advertise with Alistair Sawdays? Have you found them any good, and does anyone know the entry fee (if accepted of course).  Also I am currently torn between Gites de France and Clevacances, I am situated in the Cantal department in the Auvergne and have very little to compare them with as it a region relatively new to tourism.  Any feedback on advertising for 2007 would be great. 4. Hello, I just wanted to say thanks for all your help and advice.  We have since contacted various churches around France, however, as it is now approaching 2 weeks till we get married, all were unable to help.  So we have since contacted our community priest again and he has agreed to bless our marriage for us as we really have no other option.  So we will now be having a service with all our friends and family on our wedding day, we are both really happy. Thanks again. Amelia
  5. Thanks lindylou, I have had a look and the closest seems to be Lyon, still a 3 hr drive from us.  I will telephone them this afternoon to see if they have any recommendations. Thank you for taking the time to help me. amelia
  6. Hi There, I am currently in the final stages of planning my wedding which will take place on the 2nd of June (3 weeks on Saturday!).  I'm not sure about boutonnieres being tradition, as long as you don't use crysanthemums (funeral flowers) they would be a lovely touch. The way I feel about our wedding is that it is a mix of English and French traditions, therefore if you would have had them in the UK then why not in France.  Have you thought about a Croquembouch for your wedding cake?  It is traditional for all your friends and family to perform sketches during the wedding breakfast to illustrate various things to do with the bride and groom.  The bride and groom also toast out of a 2-handled cup to celebrate their unity, getting married under a canopy as well to protect your marriage.  Sugared almonds for favours.  There are plenty if you search the web.  We have decided to have a big mixture - a croquembouch and a traditional wedding cake. All I need now is to find a vicar! amelia
  7. I am posting this in a desperate search to find an Anglican Minister who is willing to bless our marriage on the 2nd of June this year.  Myself and my fiance live in a small village called Marchal in the Cantal department, just near the crossroads of Puy de Dome and Correze.  As we live in a predominantly Catholic area we are struggling to find an Anglican Minister who will perform a marriage blessing for us after our civil ceremony.  We have contacted our Cure to see if he would be willing to give us a Benediction, however, he has refused but very kindly offered us the Church in our village to use should we be able to find an Anglican Minister.  We have followed up many leads on Churches and our closest is an American church in Clermont Ferrand, but after waiting for a response we have been informed that the minister will be out of town on the 2nd of June and therefore unable to help.  If anyone knows anyone or has any information for us we would be extremely grateful.  It really would mean a lot for us to have our marriage blessed in church. Thank you for your time. Amelia

  9. Hi, Myself and my fiance run a B&B in the Cantal department of the Auvergne.  I offer evening meals on a daily basis and always enquire as to whether my guests have any dietary requirements or absolute dislikes.  I therefore do come across several vegetarian requests.  I have an absolute love of food and an even bigger desire to please people with the food I produce, I therefore have a love of inventive menus be they for vegetarians or those who eat everything.  I would love to be involved in your search for vegetarian b&bs simply because the vegetarians who have stayed with me have told of such boring meals they regularly get in France, mainly omelette or avocado salad! If you would like to look at our website, please visit www.la-fromental.com Amelia
  10. Thanks, I'll have a look at that.  I'm currently organising my wedding and we are looking for places for decorations and favours etc as well.  We wanted to go for a blend of French and English to please both sets of guests so didn't just want to buy from UK.  Site looks good as it has a marriage book on the first page.  Thanks. If anyone has any ideas for a typical French wedding I would love to hear them.
  11. Hi, We have a small B&B situated in cantal, between the Puy de Sancy (Puy de Dome) and the Plomb de Cantal.  We are 25 mins from Super Besse and and about 30mins from Mauriac.  Please have a look at our website www.la-fromental.com if you are interested.  Thanks.
  12. Can anyone tell me if there are any craft suppliers for dried flowers, soap making supplies christmas crafts etc, online or preferably a shop.  I live near Clermont Ferrand and I am willing to travel.  What would they be listed as in France? Cheers Daisy-May
  13. Just to let you know my parcel arrived yesterday, 2 days short from 3 weeks after posting.  As far as I can tell it hasn't been round the houses or opened by the customs.  Oh well, these things happen.  By the way Royal Mail will not chase a late delivery until 20 working days after it was posted.
  14. Does anyone know where to start chasing a lost parcel, is it Royal Mail or La Poste?????  Anyone have any useful ideas I would be grateful as the parcel still has not come.  Even our post lady thinks it's a bit late now, but does she know who to enquire to - NO. Daisy
  15. Hi, Thanks for all your responses, the parcel still has not arrived.  It's always difficult to know whether a letter is just lost or taking a different route.  I would hope that if there was a problem they might consider contacting the recipient or the return address - maybe thats wishful thinking.  We're giving it until wednesday then we're off to see the chemist in our village to see if they can help. cheers, Daisy
  16. Thanks for your help - I hope you're right.  It's not urgent - more of an annoyance if she goes without it for long.  She was unable to come over with enough pills as the doctor is only allowed to issue 1 month at a time, it is on repeat but will only be issued when there is only one week left.  So she knew she was going to be away during this time and as the medication is fairly routine (and made by a french company) she didn't think it would be a problem.  Fingers crossed it's taking a small diversion - has been known, we have letters arrive via Frankfurt.  I just wondered if anyone knew anything about french customs. Cheers, Daisy
  17. Hi, I am hoping someone might be able to shed some light for me.  I currently have my mum staying with me here in France and she required a prescription whilst she was out here.  As it was on a repeat prescription my dad got the medication for her and posted it out in a jiffy bag.  It has not arrived 2 weeks on and we are now starting to be a little concerned that there is a problem at customs.  Does anyone know if you are allowed to send medication - it would have been complete in the boxes they came in and no more than 1 months supply.  Do customs scan parcels?  If there is a problem will we find out or will that parcel just be filed into a box that no one will ever see again>? I would be grateful if anyone could help as I have no idea and my mum is a little concerned. Thanks, Daisy
  18. Hi all, just done my weekly weigh in.  Before breakfast first thing this morning I had lost 200g but by the time I had been for my morning walk (in the snow this morning so did work extra hard), had my shower I had lost another 400g. Some might say it was water loss from sweating but I believe I had put that water back in with my shower. I know it's not accurate but it certainly gives you a confidence boost.  Any loss is a loss none the less.  Did that make sense? I am trying to eat dinner at lunch time and then something like a salad or a stir fry for tea.  I am finding this is helping and I'm not so starving at tea time.  Plus trying to eat as much fish and seafood as possible.  I have also replaced products for low fat versions i.e 15% fat creme fraiche and low fat spread.  Something I never really believed in, but every little counts.  I also use sweetner which tastes horrible in tea but in desserts etc you can't tell the difference.  This and the increased exercise I am doing has led me to a weight loss for the first time in over a year.  So can't be too bad. Keep up the good work and as long as you have not put on - its ok.  I am really envious of you gym Jan, sounds wonderful and having your friends join in too.  I keep trying to get my other half to come on a walk with me, sometimes he does but then he'll get home have thick butter on his bread and eat nutella straight from the jar.  Men! Good luck for next week. Daisy
  19. Hi, I was wondering if I could join your diet chats.  I have been on a "diet" since December now and find all your posts really interesting.  Living in the heart of rural Auvergne - Cantal, I don't have too many people to compare notes with, not sure if the village women are all too keen on weight watching, or fashion/makeup/etc for that matter.  I do the BBC Big Challenge online, it's quite interesting as they give lots of advice on eating and exercise, plus they ask you to weigh in every friday and enter your new weight and waist size.  My exercise regime is a 30-40 min walk every morning over my drive way and round (over some steep hills etc) depending on how many "optional extras" I do.  I also have a rebounder which is good fun (need a good bra though) and I try to bounce 10 mins every night.  With all this exercise I have only lost 2.5kg since December - but it is a loss so I am happy.  This week I have lost 600g.  I am off to UK to visit family on the 21st and it always seems to be a different nationality restaurant each week - will definitely have to have some self control. Daisy
  20. Thanks again, we will simply try and try again regarding information. TU, just to say, I did not say people we knew got money, all I stated that they were registered with the ANPE, and again let me say again my partner is looking for a job with the ANPE - not money.  But thank you about the other points you raised. First on our list is to visit the ANPE again and then to chase up with Manpower. Thanks Elaine- I think we just need to keep asking the questions in the right places.
  21. Thanks for all your replies. Yes my partner really has been here since July without being in the system.  It is not the situation we wanted to be in but we are really struggling to get up to date information, the CCI actually informed us that having my partners name on the business would increase our cotisations to near on double - you are expected to believe the CCI from the horses mouth in person as gospel - this frightened us.  We do not have an accountant as we really are a basic business.  When you do not have 2 pence to rub together it is very hard to finance an accountant despite the benefits would far exceed the cost, we simply cannot afford one.  Before we started opened our business we had meetings with social services, assedic, ANPE, CCI and the prefacture.  My partners CV was forwarded to Manpower but nothing in return.  The collective advice was get the business open and register asap and get my partner into the job seekers market.  I know everybody does it by the book and are all running perfect businesses and everybody loves to have a go at somebody who is ignorant to the french system and obviously doing things the wrong way - but it is really difficult when the information you are receiving is so conflicting.  For the time being it will probably help us if my partner moves back to UK temporarily to search for work.  Here in rural cantal the official bodies do not seem to want anything to do with us.  Without paying for an accountant I was hoping to get advice on being self employed in France.  I will certainly look into registering as a couple and how much it really costs.  If he can register as a french resident through the mairie what happens about his health care etc?   Again, we really do not want to be in this situation but we are and now would like to change it.
  22. As the business is registered in my name I am fully paid up in all respects, for my partner to be named in the business it would double up out cotisations which at around 3,500€ are very steep already.  My partner does want a job and as part of the role of the ANPE is the same as any job centre in the UK, it is the first port of call to get registered in france if you cannot prove your income.  Besides the point, he is living in France and searching for work and we know various other people in the same situation who have been helped enormously by the ANPE, maybe not found jobs yet but they are definitely in the system.  My partner is not looking for handouts from the ANPE he is looking to be registered on the national database for job seekers.  So in that respect they were being very unhelpful, you can't get registered in france unless you have a job, are looking for a job or can prove you have X amount of money in the bank - so what else was he meant to do.  We're not trying to abuse the system, we have never claimed benefits in our lives, it has come to the point when we genuinely need a little assistance, we have a business ready for income and it is a short term measure until the summer months arrive.
  23. Please can anyone enlighten me.  I am trying to find out whther there is any social assistance for the self employed.  I can find all the information regarding RMI and unemployment.  My partner and I opened our b&b last July but due to unforeseen circumstances we have not received the income we needed to survive until business starts to really flow this summer.  My partner visited the local ANPE to subscribe as a job seeker but was met by a very unhelpful person who would not even register him on the system.  As the business is in my name and my partner is not a registered french resident, our only option now is for my partner to return to the UK to search for work or to find out whether there are any benefits I may be entitled to as as a self employed person.    If anyone has any information regarding self employment rights in france I would be extremely grateful. thanks, maggie
  24. Thanks everyone for your replies. Interesting to see Credit Agricole charged 1percent as according to their website there is no charge.  I have now ordered the welcom pack from American Express so I will take it from there.  I must admit I have only had 1 request to pay be TCs and they were touring on a motorbike so I guess I can understand not wanting cash, but I do think cards are far more practical these days. Cheers Amelia
  25. Please can anyone let me know the process with travellers cheques these days. How do I process them if I accept, is there any paper work or do I simply pay them in like a normal cheque? do I pay a fee (i'm with credit agricole).  I really want to say no to save me the hassle - any ideas please. cheers amelia
