  1. Totally useless though for anything over a 34B! In my case forget it!!!! They don't hold up anything.
  2. Yuk - I hated that song - the other one he did was also a 'weepy' - Summer - almost as bad as that female British artist, used to burst into tears every time she sang! God it was depressing!
  3. Thanks all - Thornes it is for Uk hives and our Limousiin Syndicate for the Dadant. x
  4. We are now into the swarming season for bees. Chris and I are now registered beekeepers and if anyone is around the Piegut/Nontron area we might be able to take them off you if you have a swarm. Please leave a message if you want help - we are members of the Limousin Syndicate now, so most probably can organise something with other beekeepers in the area.
  5. Cockchafer? Had one flying around the living room Saturday night!
  6. Sitting there doing my spanish TMA, when a small bird started singing next to me in the bush. I tried to find it, and eventually saw it. Small, brown, a bit like a cross between a wren and a sparrow. But the song was amazing - I got up and was only about two foot away, watching it sing - discovered tonight on the web it was the bird I have been looking for - the nightingale. Superb! x
  7. We have just had our rear portes-fenetres measured, supplied and fitted. 8 weeks from signing devis. Width just under 3 metres, height - just over 2.5 metres. Cream Upvc, superb - cost just under 2,700 euros! That includes taking down the old garage doors as well. Small local French firm came, measured and did all the work as they said. They are really good. Impressed - didn't cash devis cheque until a week before they came and still waiting to pay them remainder - no final facture come yet.
  8. Alpinemist, as Cooperlola knows, we are sort of in same position - trying to figure out where we go when E106/S1 runs out at the end of the year. Apart from taking up as AE, or funding health ourselves, have yet not looked to what happens next. As Coops says, until 2012 when the first group of 5 years are up, then we will find out how the system willl work. Mind you I have always felt the French have stabbed themselves in the foot with this one. If every ex-pat was paying their dues in the French system, there would be more money going in - not everyone paying in will be taking out, so the system would be making, not losing?
  9. We have a gas water heater above the kitchen sink, with a gas bottle underneath. It is designed for showers, looks ok and heats enough water for our daily use - instantaneous. Simples (and cheap).
  10. Welcome, we have been here since the end of last year and are early retirees. We now have a French registered car and our Carte Vitales, for our health. Am still trying to sort out our top up insurance. Learning French is sooo important to getting help and advice. In our village there are a lot of Brits, Dutch, Belgians and French, even a Portuguese! But we all talk with each other, tell each other what is what and have learnt soo much how things are done and how they are not done! Make sure you mix with your neighbours, it's the quickest way to learn the language and our neighbours are aware that many Brits do not speak the language or mix and can't understand why they live in a country where they can't speak to other people. We have to find full health care as from the end of the year when our S1 runs out, so we are looking now - things don't often happen that quickly in France. Apart from that, enjoy your life and good luck to you! x
  11. Came back after a holiday to find crispy dead bat stuck on fly paper!
  12. Lidl has my vote - a miniature potted rose bush - remember that red means I love you, white however is forever! Then I ask him for his credit card - and I know he loves me!! x
  13. dooh wah dooh - thank you Krusty - still playing the original! But know just what he's talking (singing) about.
  14. A cinema in La Roche Chalais is showing "The Kings Speech" (Le discours d'un roi) in English on the following dates Thursday 3rd March and Sunday the 6th March at 9.00pm (21.00h)
  15. I am one of those affected! We have calculated we can survive on his work pension until my pension (was due) to come into effect in 2018! Now I have to wait until 2020! Anyone in the final 10 years to this run up should be contacting their MP - we have already made the sacrifices those who should have got a pension at 60 had it pushed, year by year to equalise us with the men in our lives. In my case I am older than my hubby, so in our case we need my pension before his! We have spent 10 years working out how our lives will work to get us to France, and now this - another 2 years (no doubt it will be more than we anticipate), what are they playing at?
  16. My favourite piano concerto is 'The Dream of Olwen', played by Charles Williams - I have the lead 78, can only play it on my Phillips, which I bought when I was around 23 (now mid fifties). Great music.
  17. Chris is my 'toyboy'. Been married 22 years! So what if I get my pension before him! I would never dream of asking him to give up his love of classic American cars, or the love he has for the '50s. On the other hand, my own renovated 1950's kitchen cupboard is ideal in France! Feel comfortable in your skin and go for what feels right! As was said, a true partner would never expect you to give up anything! Have a great life! It goes too quickly! x
  18. We should have car stickers so we can play the 'Steady Eddie' game - cross off the name when you see the sticker!
  19. Yeh, come to think of it we do seem to have a load more coathangers than we started with !
  20. When you come out of the tunnel - follow initially the route marked Elbeouf - there is a first turn to the right, ignore this, you swing down on the second right (I believe), it is a tight loop and drops you down a spiral. You drive alongside the railway and then go straight over the 'cow roundabout'. The total tolls we pay on this route is 20 euros in the car - we come off at Limoges. There is no charge from Vierzon (south of Orleans) to Limoges on the A20
  21. I had a Panasonic & so did me mum! Sucked up everything - cat hair and mine (I shed more than any animal the family will agree to that) - Chris says even found the kid in there when we emptied the bag. Lightweight, great for stairs and flat floors as well as carpets. Left ours in Uk with the daughter last year - missing it!
  22. I got a black and white photocopy and asked what I thought. Saw the place for the first time just before we signed our acte de vente and handed over the final dosh! Fell in love and been working on it ever since! Love the people, love the village and the lifestyle - even on a small pension!
  23. Would kill for another upright Panasonic!
  24. Been married 20 odd years, never had a missing sock problem until we moved to France - and then my socks keep disappearing - once seems to go each wash - decided the washing machine eats them or, accordng to Terry Pratchett, it's the sock fairy - but I don'r get a 'gloing' when one vanishes!
