1. The last few days I have had BBC4 HD missing. I had a toddle up the garden last night and saw that the dish had some sort of triffid attached to it. I gave it a severe short back and sides and all is now back to normal but it was really odd that it was just the one channel I had missing. Probably absolutely nothing to do with your problem but I thought I would share non the less.
2. so you want to reverse the thermostatic valve http://www.nyrpcorp.com/shower-valve-thermostatic-cartridges there must be a euro site you can find them but to be honest it's late and I can't be arsed to search for a French site or even a UK one, so I suggest you give them  a call. and good luck, as my recent dealings with the U.S.of A have not been positive...computer says no..."we don't have the facility to post to France"... as if it's difficult writing a French address on an envelope
3. there will be an accountant somewhere rubbing his hands together thinking... "that went well...10 bob well spent"
4. My guess is that the contract has been outsourced to Mumbai....you pay peanuts you get monkeys. Sadly the way most IT is going these days.   Someone probably tested it on some obscure Linux browser and it looked fine. Tossers.   By the way in IE it is marginally better if you put it into Compatibility View as the adverts disappear
5. No1 Son did a year of Medicine in Toulouse - mostly free of charge although we had to help out with some costs. He got a bourse - which is means tested - and he gets his own allowance from CAF. It "almost" covered everything.  He didn't make it into the 2nd year though as he didn't make the top 80 (out of around 800 who started the year). To be honest not many do and those that stay on try for a few years to make the cut to move on. He switched to Sports Science in Nancy and because my own personal situation changed he didn't get a bourse. So our funding had to increase, mainly for rent. There is a way to claim the money you give against Tax you pay, but it also means that they have to go down the Tax declaration route, and we found out too late for this year so I don't know exactly how it works. No2 son has just passed his BAC so he is on his way into Uni land as well, although he is considering the Royal Engineers as a career. I have heard that Holland is a good place to go to Uni, I'm not sure of the costs but a lot of the courses are now taught in English
6. where are you based? i.e. how big is the dish going to be ? if it's over 1m then get a man in
7. If someone is causing criminal damage e.g. setting fire to the trainline, why can't they be arrested ? Is it still the case in France that if damage is caused as part of a greve etc, e.g. torching a car, then the law can't touch them ? I do wonder that nowerdays  it only takes a few hundred tyre burners to cut off a major route into the UK
8. I dread to think of the muck on some of the trolleys. I watched a bloke come out of the supermarket, desperate for a piss. It was raining stair rods, so he headed for the only bit of cover to relieve himself...the trolley parking area. So, everyone after that wheeled their piss-wheeled trolleys through the store. I sometimes wish I'm 6"6', built like a flanker and speak fluent French to be able to wag my finger in faces and tell them what complete toss pots they are. To be honest though, those that do that sort of thing are just ignorant and to stupid to understand.  Too much breeding with cousins in my neck of the woods
9. I would go with Idun Rosace Chromee or Rosace Emaille
10. it's gone all Harry Hat Stand here as well. I don't think it would be an LNB problem considering we have the same problem
11. The French seem to favour relays to handle the multi-switch option. It works OK if you have short cable runs as everything goes back to the box. (you buy some special unit that fits in your consumer unit thingy) We went the way of using English intermediary switches, 4 quid each from B&Q,  but don't conform to French norms because of the modula way French switches can be assembled it is possible to buy single switches and build an intermediary - we tried but the quality of the switching units we bought were rubbish and it didn't work. We ended up throwing them away and going the B&Q route
12. I would do it by hand and it will be a lot cheaper. With the labour you have, one mixing, one carrying one laying you should be able to do it in less than a day. 3cu is around 3000 ltr and if you hire one of the big cement mixers , you can get a 110ltr at least, then it should only take you 30-40 loads.
13. that was quite an interesting read Q - I know there is a lot of technical stuff around the LNB and the dish size/shape, but the man in the street (me !) really doesn't have anyone to trust when it comes to getting it spot on or the time to play around. There is also cable quality and length to consider, and the box that decodes it all. For the record we have an Invacom Quad LNB and 1.5m Gibertini Aluminium dish. For the most part we have 90-100% strength and quality all the time although we did lose some signal when it was snowing heavily.  It works for now but I won't be surprised if they tighten the beam even further soon so no matter how big the dish we have we will lose the signal.
14. we're just over the border in 65. you could possibly get away with a 1.25-1.30m but it is variable in the region, there are peaks and troughs. That is to say 1m may work in one place and 20K away you may need a 1.25m dish I bought a 1.5m (from some company on fleebay in Germany) dish as I thought it would be a bit future proof for a while, especially as they decides to wobble/tighten the beam a bit further. The LNB , I can't remember where I got it from, but to be honest it doesn't make much difference. The dish size is the bit that matters and it's worth the cost of getting a man with a proper device to set it up properly, especially of you decide to buy a bigger dish as it needs a bloke with muscles to get it into position.  And don't try and fit a 1.5m dish to your chimney as it will rip your house down. They are rather large and it's difficult to not make your house look like Jodrell bank
15. I tried to explain the concept of Premium Bonds to our tax office with the purpose of trying to work out where to put the value of the bonds on the tax return.  They couldn't get their head round the idea so we mutually agreed to ignore them. Technically if you have a win then you have a "gain" on the original investment so should pay tax on it, but as it's tax free in the UK I have no idea how you would explain that away with a dual tax treaty. Now that you can get the winnings (as if !!) paid into a french bank account it may make someone higher up the French tax hierarchy sit up and take notice as it could be a nice little earner for them. I suggest any winnings are re-invested in the UK and mums-the-word [Www]
16.
Thanks for the replies. So I still have to do some kind of induction even for 50cc's ?
I don't know for definite...but someone else on this forum will be along to say yay or nay. I only have my experience to go on and No3 son did, but he has never held a UK licence. I would doubt you personally would need to do anything for a 50cc bike but as you don't hold a full bike licence I can't say for certain, sorry
17. if you want to rent an apartment then make sure you bring lots of cash. It's very expensive here. if it's short term then there are web sites available that will offer short term lets. There are always people going away for weeks/months and flats/apartments are available, but I will re-iterate, it's very expensive
18. With an English licence you can ride up to 125cc without taking "the code" ...theory (but in French), but you will have to do an 8 hour riding introduction. In my case, it was actually about 3 hours on the bike, but still had to pay for the 8.  It maybe more relaxed for a 50cc, no 3 son had to do a certain number of hours induction, but he was only 15. It's only an "induction" - there is no actual test that I could see. I can't comment on the sans permit cars other than if you do drive one everyone will think you've been done for drink driving
19.
I just tested it and AnOther and I are correct.
hmmm... I tried it again and it didn't work for me...that's pc's for you gmail to wanadoo = opened up orange.fr web client ... OK...and then OE ... not OK  I won't lose any sleep over it
20.
you have told OE to delete mails from the server which if memory serves is not the default action. Who the heck uses OE in 2015 any way ?
but isn't this is the other way round ? Reading the emails on the orange site automatically flags them as downloaded. I haven't found a way on OE to reload them,  There was a method using telnet yonks ago but I've forgotten how to do that and reset the mail headers...life's too short to be honest. As to OE - it works ok for us. We have 5 people with several pop email addresses that are still live from when we were in the UK as well as using it for wanadoo/orange etc. OE allows us to bring everything together. I've not had the time to see if there is an alternative
21. one thing to bear in mind is that when you get back to France and outlook express, the emails will not be there as you've already downloaded them via the web interface so if there is anything you need to keep that is important remember you can only see through orange.fr
22. It's not just for these 2 days. They have earmarked 9 days in April and finishing 2nd May
23. It looks like Kingfisher have just dropped the idea of buying Mr Bricolage
24. Thanks Theiere, I will give it a bash over Easter. I'm guessing that when I re-pressurise the filter that I leave the top pressure gauge open whilst it fills with water to let the air escape ?
25. yes, it's a DE filter - and I had to search the web to find out what that meant. I seem to be wrong about the zeolite The question still stands as to how to depressurise = do I just turn the main valve to backwash and open the top pressure indicator ?
