Also he lives in a gated, secure compound along with other residents which is patrolled and guarded with armed guards on duty 24/7. They have not had any intruders before either.

though they have had multiple call-outs to previous domestic disputes at the property . . .

2. In the many of the dealers, the car is vetted by someone while you're having a chat about your new car over coffee; mileage, interior and paint condition being the 'key' items and then rather than referring to book values which are so fluid, two or three associated dealers are rung for a telephone offer, in many cases the car is sold over the phone 'subject to description' before it is even traded in and your deal is done. Your deal also may include some allowance in the profit level of the car you intend to buy. Of course if the trade-in vehicle is subsequently returned in a different condition to its inspection, a deduction may be made to allow for that.

Anything you can do to touch in the scratches will disguise the level of damage, and then a good polish, some even suggest a coating of 'gods polish', (go back in the rain, or chuck a bucket of water over it before pulling onto the forecourt!)

It seems that France has the British disease in a big way, though this probably refers only to the highly, unionized, semi-skilled, larger industrial units which are currently closing left, right and centre. It is so reminiscent of UK some time ago.

I would add that the two guys who laid a terrace for me over the last two days (all legal, Norman) worked steadily and hard and got the job done very well, even refusing coffee. Perhaps there is a hint here for the president and Mr Mountebank.

Am I being naive, or is Mr Hollande just never gonna make it, or France's social aspirations ever work?

You might have more luck with this Chancer.

The head of US tyremaker Titan International has launched a brutal attack on productivity in France, telling the government that some French workers “work only three hours a day” and his company would be “stupid” to consider taking over a factory in the country.

A letter from Maurice Taylor, Titan’s chairman to Arnaud Montebourg, the controversial industry minister, writes: “The French workforce gets paid high wages but work only three hours, the French union workers told me that’s the French way!”

“How stupid do you think we are?” said Mr Taylor, the union is “crazy”.

I just love his down to earth approach!

Is it just my perception or are there more younger men going bald nowadays than there were 50 years ago? And are there a lot more "gay" people about nowadays than the ones that were referred to as "nancy boys" years ago? And another thing...have man boobs always existed?
I'd say so, . . . in the mane [:P]

5.
Until very recently it was commonplace in France for people to take the points for other people who needed to keep their licenses. There was a flourishing underground market in it with quite good prices attached.

This has only been followed up since last year.
At the same time who would ever expect a French politician to resign because of lying or even being found guilty and charged (if it is were ever to be allowed to get that far)
Look at the case of Alain Juppé
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alain_Jupp%C3%A9#Criminal_conviction
who is still Mayor of Bordeaux and who was asked to try to sort out the affairs of the UMP last autumn
Le Pen was accused of war Crimes
Charles Pasqua has been let off six times and twice given suspended sentences00
Chirac was convicted of embezzling public funds, abuse of trust and illegal conflict of interest in 2011 and given a 2 year suspended sentence
Sarkozy's cases  are  still being heard

Quite So, Norm, all of the above worthy of penalty;

I am at a loss to see the need for the waste of money from the public purse in this case, from a basic motoring infringement, becoming a perversion of justice criminal case with such results; the courts becoming an instrument of a woman's spite, revenge, and inability to have said No in the first place. Since the original infringement was clearly by agreement and now we all have to watch the spectacle, I can only say that Imho they are equally guilty, and that she should receive an equal penalty; what was the point really?, sure she has put a temporary halt to his career, but no doubt he will appear in some quango or in some MEP consultative position, what will she become? apart from bitter twisted and unable to accept reality and the result of her own moral weakness in the first place.

6. There was no respite for those killed, nor for their living relatives, I recently watched a program where relatives were visiting Poland, old men who watched their parents dragged away and had never forgotten but continued to search for news, even finding some small relative solace in a photograph of their parents suitcase found in a warehouse at Auschwitz and put on show at the Auschwitz Commemoration in Poland ! they are still living the hell, amongst others. And the perpetrators should be found and made to forfeit their freedom to enjoy what's left of their lives.
7. I feel like Janet Webb (where is she now[:)]) at the end of Morcambe and Wise show, 'I love you all';

all good things come to an end, rightly so when they get a strop on, unless they've gone to that forum in the sky that's the one I miss most!

but the original post was sent to me by a French friend who was bemoaning the outrageous costs of politics in France compared to Germany, the differences are significant I feel. Furthermore . . .

Not at all Clark, if you'd read the whole posting you would have also seen the subsequent post, clarifying that my interest was the opinion of french friends expressing their dissatisfaction and quoting an article from a french site. http://www.facebook.com/J.AIME.ALORS.JE.PARTAGE?group_id=0

My point was that we (UK citizens) are not the only ones concerned about the cost of our politicians,
irrespective of whether any statistics are accurate or complete.[Www]

9.
How does that compare to the UK,  including the Queen???

I've no idea, I'd say the Queen was a separate issue; but the original post was sent to me by a French friend who was bemoaning the outrageous costs of politics in France compared to Germany, the differences are significant I feel. Furthermore . . .

10. Thanks Loiseau and Sweet
Ours was also like a thin, malnourished twig and I thought last year's snow would have put paid to it.  However, after all the leaves have dropped off, it came back to life with the warmer weather.

Just stick it in the ground and ignore it and I think you'll find that it will live despite the harshest conditions.

Ours have thrived through total neglect from its owners.
Thanks Sweet, that's the kind advice I was hoping to get, just my kind of plant!
as far as gardening goes, I'm a sower, planter, looker, cutter and cut-downer, not so hot on the nurturing nature stuff.[;-)]

Exactly Anton, having just checked, a real eye opener that Michelin, that most French of Map companies, could be behind the status quo,
and a lesson about the shortcomings of relying solely on Sat Nav's

12. A friend has given me an Olive tree to plant at my place in the Charente, I wonder if anyone on here has any experience with olive trees?. A local Farm was selling fully grown specimens (about a foot diameter trunk, couple of metres tall, in huge metre plus diametre pots) so presumably the climate is suitable, but I have no clue as to how to cultivate one? my specimen is in a pot about 6ins across and looks like a twig about a metre plus high with lots of leaves. My soil is only about 15'' on top of almost solid chalky subsoil.

I found an earlier post with links relating to North America but not much applicable .

13. I put mine on the screen under the mirror, since I check the mirror a lot and it doesn't take my eyes off the road view, I like to see the next direction speed limit etc, I did try it once on the quarterlight but found it was taking my eyes off the ahead view and it fell off when slamming the door!

14. A quick update on the garmin I bought, (http://www.gpscompared.net/tomtom-start-60-europe-vs-garmin-nuvi-2595lmt/  a bit of compromise, no 6" screen but a decent reduction, 5" Sat Nav with Europe Maps, Lifetime Map Updates and Traffic Alerts, Bluetooth and some of the better reviews on Amazon.

More than happy despite the difficulty of wading through a manual, search for some addresses will deny existence unless you have exactly the spelling they have, unlike Google and other search engines which will off you the nearest town with that spelling; and as I'm just discovering a bit difficulty on selecting toll information, even avoiding toll roads is a pfaff, hence my need for a bit of pre-planning, out of all the route planners Mappy.com seems to suit France particularly well, funny that, I assumed Michelin had it covered. Mappy is also better for budget hotels especially the smaller privately owned.

15. Thanks Andy and Paul; Since I've got used to my sat-nav I've got a bit lazier and rarely pre-plan, but thought I'd better check tolls and scary they are!

Out of all the route planners Mappy.com seems to suit France particularly well, funny that, I assumed Michelin had it covered. 16. Thanks Thiere, and Andy, the tolls are the thing, on this journey at around 2.5 times the cost of the normal trip (similar mileage) I make down from the channel port to Angouleme (ie less than 40€ normally coming down, but over 100€ to go to Italy). I have done the route before, sometime in 2000, but I am not familiar with it enough to know if there are stretches of expensive tolls that could be avoided with an alternative stretch of Toll free Road?
I was hoping there were stretches of route that could be done Toll free? Any clues ?
