  1. I'm not surprised, they cause trouble with the trolley.
  2. Do what we always do. Moan and complain a lot.
  3. If you have a new-ish house, the earth may be taken to the bottom of the foundation trench, with a wire laid along the bottom of the trench rather than a rod. It's a good system if you have it, but it's obviously not a good wheeze for renovations.
  4. If you're passing through UK try Machine Mart, they do a good line in cheap submersible pumps
  5. The problem with a very small extension is that is has a disproportionate amount of wall etc compared with the nominal floor area. I wouldn't be at all surprised if you got devis coming in at around Euros 1500 per square metre
  6. Those will be the ones they use in cuckoo clocks ... essential for good timekeeping.
  7. I'm not so sure about this. The modern commercial engine has high bypass by basically having a very large compressor stage and zooming most of it straight past. You still have much the same sort of core turbine stage. I suspect it all depends on clearances in the turbine stage and working temperatures and pressures.
  8. If its going to be in a hidden location there's no real substitute for a soldered end cap.
  9. I suspect some possible mis-translation. See: http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2010/04/16/340727/pictures-finnish-f-18-engine-check-reveals-effects-of-volcanic.html No sign of any sheep, low-flying or otherwise
  10. Lordy lordy, last time was somewhere in the Gulf of Suez and year or two back, but there they are about twenty years behind the times ... fortunately I am now retired ... good luck
  11. Deep sympathy AnOther. Any moment now it'll be over the side in the basket for a jolly supply boat ride back to the beach .... eventually
  12. Just getting back to the original point for a moment: We have a SAAB 95 Estate 2.2TID. It functions pretty well at 70 mph / 40 mpg but push it and the consumption rockets. Back off to 60 mph and we go up to 42-45 mpg, but it's very boring. I spend a lot of time putting the roof rack on and taking it off again (+/- 2 mpg or so), and keeping the aircon off unless really necessary.
  13. I have a theory that David Cameron doesn't actually exist and all we are seeing is a computer graphic person .... he always looks slightly unreal ...
  14. It's old-fashioned but is still OK. I would leave it as it is, because the French cartridge fuses have different physical sizes for different ratings.
  15. AnOther you are probably right, but as far as I am aware, a house is a house and there are no legal, tax or other differences between a holiday home or a principal residence. If there are I have yet to find them.
  16. Agree on the subject of gardens. We have the bruises and the shed of dead mowers to prove the point. And you would never believe how fast the grass can grow in Manche ...
  17. If you are buying as a holiday home consider how far you want to go to get to it. It is not a good idea to assume that low-cost airlines will always run to where you want to go, and even ferries rise and fall according to demand. We have had a res. secondaire in Manche for 15 + years and we went there because we could rely on good transport links, and we go regularly ... nearly every month. But you also have to remember that Manche is not that far South and there are very good reasons why the countryside is lush and green ...
  18. Came back to UK on the overnight sailing on Thursday night (08 April). Very few people on board, good night's kip (slow steaming) and not too much rush for breakfast. Might not be so good if the vessel was crowded.
  19. Cap Finistere now tested. As expected, she's low on sitting space as she's obviously designed for overnight crossings with plenty of cabins. A nice bar area with lots of seats aft, totally ruined by insidious vibration that will knock your teeth out, and the inevitable muzak ...
  20. Some of the passenger numbers in the winter would have fitted onto a Sunseeker, but what would we have done with the car ? Not surprised Sunseekers are not selling well. I would have thought that those plastic gin-palaces were the preserve of (b)ankers and MPs
  21. The problem with BARFLEUR (and the Poole run) was that it was very undersubscribed in the winter. Sometimes there was only a handful of passengers tippy-toeing around so as not to disturb the crew. She hadn't got enough cabin accommodation to put on the Spain run.
  22. I observe that Brittany Ferries have now published details of the Cap Finistere ex Superfast V. The information is a bit hazy as to what seating will be available. It looks a bit as though there will not be too much in the way of reclining seats. Anybody out there know any more ?
