  1. French "CV" for tax purposes bear no relation to the output of the engine;as you say a car rated at 6CV for fiscal purposes may well be producing 50-60 BHP just as in the UK,the RAC rating was used at one time for road tax purposes(a long time ago) and being based only on the bore of the engine and not the stroke also had nothing to do with power output. It also produced some peculiar engines with tiny bores and very long strokes. The French calculation takes into account the gear ratios and final drive ratio.Modern EU power figures are now officially quoted in Kw.;someone quoted conversions above to change these into BHP and Cv(actual) which are not used for car taxation in Farnce.
  2. It is a "bizarre" formula but I do not know if it is the one you found;the UK used to have the "RAC" horse power rating which only took into account the bore of the engine and not the stroke.
  3. The "PUISSANCE" of a vehicle originally sold in France may not be the same as that of what appears to be an equivalent vehicle sold in other UK countries. To get a particularly good "CV" rate for taxation purposes(original tax not road tax) there were many changes made to the spec. of vehicles sold in France, such as different g/boxes,final drives because of the method of calculation.
  4. Artic trailers(semi-trailers)come under different legislation to stand-alone trailers.
  5. It also depends on the quality of the copper pipe;some is so thin-walled that it is better to use elbows.
  6. Yes;the threads should also be different but there have been problems with some of the less responsible(and cheap) suppliers filling cylinders with the wrong gas.In the past;the regulators were set at different pressures but the latest ones are between the two settings and can be used for either(so it says in my instruction leaflet.)
  7. A butane regulator has a female connector;a propane a male connector.
  8. According to Freeview in the UK,my house cannot receive a good enough signal thro' my aerial but I went ahead and installed a set-top box anyway-pictures are excellent.Where am I-wilds of Scotland?;N0-county town-30 miles from London.
  9. Credit Agricole is not one bank;it is a federation of small banks-some just one branch.I have been with Credit Lyonnaise for 20 yrs. now and have never had any problems(at any of their branches).
  10. Compression fittings are available but only in French sizes.
  11. The hoses used to connect are marked with a date and must be changed regularly and it is worthwhile getting an auto-changeover valve which switches to a fresh cylinder when the first becomes empty.Make sure there is plenty of ventilation-particularly at floor level.
  12. I received a letter, posted in the South of France on the 19th., in Essex on 21st.am.
  13. I  had a friend with a farmhouse;he had a woodburning cooker that supplied his hot water/central heating as well.I can't remember what it was called but "Volcane"rings a bell. However what I can remember was the amount of wood it got thro' but then he did have his own forest.
  14. Modern cars probably only take two turns lock to lock:in the past, some cars used four and a half turns. Also modern PAS is what it says-assistance;I can remember early systems that were so over-servoed that there was no feel at all.
  15. Not just UNESCO,most of the UN and a lot applies to the EU lot in Brussels and don't forget all the other politicians-remember the Uk ones who all get free parking at UK airports(and a lot more).
  16. What you would call in the UK Single Vehicle Type approval but what you would go thro' is a simpler version of that;parts are checked to see that they conform with the legislation that was in force when the vehicle was first registered.
  17. Double pole circuit breakers and remote fuses;in the UK,the fuse is in the plug;there's no safety device in the socket(except for shaver sockets).
