  1. Hi,  thanks for the replies. I am actually in Switzerland, the French speaking area ,but looking for any French computer software ( or written programme games) to help my daughter learn French. I think that the school might be willing to let her use a computer , they are piloting them in the older classes for dyslexics. I had thought of one of those pens and will certainly get her one. Just returned from UK today and come back with the Nessy, Wordshark and Toe to Toe programmes (In English). I feel its important for her to maintain and improve her English but  will this confuse her while she is learning the French?
  2. Hi,  since moving over to French speaking Switzerland last year we have discovered that our daughter is dyslexic. ( we had suspected this for several years back home in Scotland but the school principal  told us she was just a mediocre student and wouldn't be anything else- despite us asking for a proper assessment which never happened). Anyway we have moved out here now and she is in a French speaking school. Does anyone know of any French dyslexic software programme, reading programmes and also any programme games , either English or French to improve her working memory and dyscalcula. We are not sure now if we are here longterm we have decided to give it one more year then we'll see how she is getting on. She is 11 years old. If we had known before coming out here I'm pretty sure we would never have moved, but now we are here I'm just trying my best to support her. She is getting some help from a logopediste at school. Thanks
  3. Hi, my husband studied an MBA at a scottish university and HEC in France (6 months each). Unfortunately it did not improve his job opportunities in france. Not sure if it has really helped since, he is at the same level of management he would have been without it. Was a great experience for him though. Joan
  4. Hi,  I have a friend who is an architect in Toulouse. He is french but speaks english(married to a scottish girl). If interested i can pass on his details. Joan
  5. Hi, I think it may be quite difficult in france , they seem to stick with one job/career for ever.we went to france a few years ago, My husband was studying at a haute ecole (HEC) doing a course to try to change direction in his career. At the end of it he could not find a job-however this may have beeen due to several reasons,- employment market, Jim`s lack of confidence with the language and age. he was 39 at the time. I`m not saying its impossible, just not that easy.- according to our experience. However even though we eventually had to go where the jobs were (Caribbean so it wasn`t too bad!)- I would do it again but be better prepared and try harder. Good luck joan

  7. Hi,  i know this is absolutely nothing at all to do with france, but would appreciate some advice asap. Just found our beloved cat dead, knocked down by a car. Am picking up the kids from school in a wee while(10 and 8 years- am very worried about hw my eldest will react, very sensitive girl who tends to keep things to herself. Am I best just being honest or saying the cat must be lost.  Thanks Joan
  8. Hi, I am a specialist nurse in Scotland who worked for several years in france and switzerland. You really do need to be have a very good level of french to work as a qualified nurse in a hospital environment, especially on the general side which is very technically orientated and short staffed in many places. There are agencies ie appel medical which may be able to help you find a position as a carer or even down the  french equivalent of the jobcentre I think its the APNE.I had worked in a busy french speaking university hospital in switzerland as a charge nurse for several years before moving to france and found it very difficult initially working in a general hospital in France. Finding a job was not really a problem I was offered lots of agency and cabinet work, however I sometimes found myself in situations which I deemed to be quite dangerous and and actually refused to work in the ward after seeing the situation. I ended up working in a private psychiatric clinic(you do not need to be a RMN) mainly because it was less technical, slower pace etc and much less stressful (at times could be a bit scary too!) I think that working in a cabinet is a good option once your french is up to scratch and if I had stayed I would probably have gone for this option. After saying all this however many of the girls I worked with in Switzerland had only O level french and were not at all fluent when they started working there. however they were well supported in the initial  few weeks and the staffing situation allowed one to be mentored very closely by another nurse for a while. For many it was sink or swim ,however this immediate immersion in the language  does greatly increase the speed at which your french will improve! anyway good luck Joan
  9. Hi Coco, where is Oustriham (sorry about the spelling )and where/who sails. Are you near there? Is it a nice part of normandy. I`ve only ever been to Rouen andb Giverny in the north so I am not sure where we want to go. We like nice  unspoilt countryside, quiet campsites, but access to traditional French towns- we must be getting old! We are going camping but usually spend several nights in a hotel especially when we arrive just to get a rest! regards Joan
  10. Hi, we are thinking of going into St Malo. is it nice around there?. As I said we do not want to be driiving very far at all when we get ther as we`ll be pretty exhausted. just want to get to France!!   regards Joan
  11. Hi everyone, have decided on a holiday in North of France this year. Was thinking of Normandy. As we are driving from the west coast of Scotland, once we get to France we really do not want to drive . Can anyone recommend anywhere that isn`t too far from channel ports, good campsites, cheap ferries? Asking too much? Sorry. I would have loved to have gone to Brittany but really feel it is too much driving. regards Joan www.beaulyinternational.com
  12. Hi, I can`t imagine what you must be going through. However personally I don`t think its something I could do. You must be still relatively young and she will not be a child for very much longer. France will always be there, however your daughters childhood won`t. This is just my personal view and please dont take offence, but think carefully. Whatever you decide to do good luck Joan www.beaulyinternational.com
  13. Hi I agree with Evianers and love the Lake Geneva region, it has the skiing, warm summers, golf , sailing etc and stunning scenery, plus a good international community close by if you need that.I had thought about the Perpignan area and having lived in both areas have finally decided to go for the Lake Geneva region. Was there last week, 33 degrees was paradise sitting on a mountain overlooking the lake. Joan
  14. Hi I`ve just come back a couple of weeks ago from the Chamonix area. I crossed over from Switzerland no problem via Forclaz, however there was one pass in the canton of Vaud that we couldn`t use as it was still shut. I would have thought that most would be open by now. We are going out again this week so I`ll let you know if we gave any problems. Joan www.beaulyinternational.com
  15. Hi, I`m trying to do a business plan and letter of introduction to businesses.I`m having a bit of trouble with some of the translation. Have tried babelfish etc and even some very well educated french friends, but still not sure I`ve got it right. Need to translate "niche market" and "niche customer base". Can anyone help please? Thanks Joan
  16. Hi Denjo, we have spent quite a lot of time down in that region ie. Midi Pyrenees, Pyrenees Orientales both in summer and winter although not around the Ceret region. We (hubby and two kids)are coming down for a week at Easter to have a look. Joan
  17. Hi are you a registered nurse ? Qualifications should be recognised. As an RGN my diploma was recognised and all I had to do was register with the DHASS (spelling?). some of the big nursing agencies used to recruit for france but not sure if they still are. I went with medic international the first time, the second time I went over on my own and found a job within a few weeks(this was sometime ago). Paediatric nurses are also employed in the nurseries in france and many of the directors or asssistant directors I met had a paeds qualification. There are alos many french nursing agencies that you could ask about employment prospects eg Appel Medical< I would do a search on google to find them. However as Val says you do need good French. Even when I thought I was fluent, I found it quite hard going at times. good luck Joan
  18. Hello Denjo, sorry I can`t help you, but we are thinking about moving to Ceret, how do you find the area? have you been there long? Joan
  19. think its only the really dark, over 70 per cent stuff that is good for you, tough for those like me addicted to Milky Bars. Joan(the Milky bar kid)
  20. Well weighed in at 72 kg today, haven`t lost an ounce.Having a real problem cutting out the chocolate and red wine. Was determined to lose some for x-mas but finding it very difficult. i did joining slimming world a month ago but only went once, like the diet but hate all this weighing and clapping in front of everyone. are there many of you on the atkins diet?I`d be a wee bit worried about the amount of fat/cholesterol in it myself especially as I have a family history of heart disease. What is the South beach diet like? (although 2 weeks without red wine, I`m not sure) Joan
  21. Smoking costs the NHS between £1.4-£1.7bn a year.I agree that education does not seem to have worked, giving people the information to make healthy choices can only help. They are also beginning to state the number of units on alcoholic drinks another major cause of illness.I hope whatever system is used on food is easy to understand at present its very difficult to read the labels and even if you can how many know the difference between saturates, mono saturates etc Joan
  22. Dear Belinda, well done on your weight loss, however just wondering if your cardiologist is ok with the Atkins diet.? regards Joan
  23. Val, could you possibly share your words of wisdom as we are planning on doing the same. Thanks, Joan
  24. Thanks for your reply Quantum. I have several of these homework / revision books which are very helpful. I usually try to stock up every time we visit France. We are trying to work through them, she is managing with the maths etc, but struggling with the French ones, they are quite dry. I am going over again in a few weeks and hoping to pick up some CD rom`s which might make it a bit more interesting for her.She has actually started taking an interest in learning recently. Up till now she was dead against the idea of going, but seems to be coming round to the idea after seeing friends house with pool(she wants one too). I am reluctant to put her into primary (CM2) as she will be going back two years. Her birthday is in late December ,she will be 12 in the Dec , we will be going over in the summer when she is eleven going on 12. I realise it will be a huge upheaval going straight into college and perhaps will consider CM2.Haven`t decided yet. Joan
  25. I really enjoy this programme, but the again I think I`m just really sad and will watch anything to do with France. Also got the magazine! These plaster blocks were interesting, not sure if you can get them in France but found some info on www.livios.be The Grand Designs website usually tells you who supplies the products although I`m not sure if they are doing it for this series. I love Les Gets and that area, and had originally thought of going over there to live, but property is pretty expensive now. Anyway time to watch No Going Back about life in French Chateau, followed by a programme about a holiday in the French Pyrenees, so I`ll be off to pur the wine now .Try to forget about the rain and floods outside in wet and windy Scotland! Joan
