GOOD NEWS!!!!!I can report that NIKOU was re-homed about 15 days ago by a very nice French couple who live in the country and have plenty of room for such a dog. I hear that so far so good and we are all keeping our fingers crossed that it works out for him. The couple have had an English Setter before, so are used to the breed. They know all about his health problems and he will hopefully be settling in to a nice warm and loving new home!!!Jouals

Yes, NIKOU is still at the refuge waiting for a home. The refuge is currently full to bulging - so if you or anyone you know might be able to give him a home, please get in touch. Fostering is also a possibility. The Refuge in Cahors will soon be looking for temporary foster homes for several dogs as some work is to be carried out to improve the conditions there. The work will be done in 3 stages and anyone who might be able to help by fostering a dog for 3 or 4 weeks, please get in touch. Contact details for the Refuge are further up the posting.Jouals

NIKOU is still waiting for a new home! He would make someone a very loving companion. If you are interested or know anyone who might be, please don't hesitate to get in touch. He can certainly go for walks, I took him out the other day, and he was so pleased to get out for some fresh air - it is heart-breaking to put him back in his cage afterwards. In fact it will be better for his health if he can get out walking more and settle in with a new family to care for him very soon (particularly with winter round the corner - those cages are not heated!).Jouals

Don't forget NIKOU. I met one of the ladies from the refuge yesterday and she told me he loves to come and sit in the office if he can - he is a gentle soul. Of course, he needs special care and attention with his hip problem - so no long distance walking for him. But with the right care, he will make a special friend for someone. Come and see him this Sunday!Jouals

NIKOU is still looking for a home- here is a new photo of him taken today. We (volunteers) took him and another dog to a charity vide grenier where we had a stand for the refuge. He was so happy to get out of the refuge for the day - to be brushed, and made a fuss of for a few hours! He must have known a home once - he knows the command for sit and gives his paw!Jouals

Yes, please do try and re-home an unwanted puppy if you can - there are so many looking for a good home like yours. I am sure it won't take long for you to find the right one. Sadly unwanted puppies are so often just put to sleep, or worse!Good luckJouals

Yes, anyone who knows the breed knows that English Setters are great dogs and once settled into a good home, with firm but kind handling, they make great companions. We had a rescue English Setter from Battersea who was completely untrained and scatty when we first got her at c age 3. But after some training, she turned into the most obedient and delightful dog. We never could understand how anyone could have dumped her (Battersea did not know her history) - she was so gentle and friendly from day 1. She too was very stressed (even with the high quality of care Battersea provide) and had only been there 18 days. We finally said goodbye to her earlier this year after 11 very happy years.Back to Nikou and some further information about him:He is not castrated. He is almost certainly an abandoned hunting dog who will need someone patient who understands this type of dog. BUT with the right handling and lots of TLC, he will make a wonderful dog for someone. He really is very unhappy at the refuge after 5 long months there and is becoming thinner and losing form with the stress of it all.For the right owners I have been told a reduction in the fee of €80 will be made. Plus covoiturage could be arranged for someone further away. He could also be fostered if someone feels they can offer him that. Thanks SueHe is one of those dogs who really cannot support being in a refuge. (Not that any of them can!) His health is definitely deteriorating. I hope we can find him a home or foster home very soon in case they end up having to have him pts!!Dogs at the refuge in Cahors are microchipped or tattooed, vaccinated and wormed. The cost of a dog there is only €80. I am sure he would make someone a very special dog with some patience and TLC.Jouals

Can anyone offer a home to a desperate English Setter? Nikou is aged about 6 years. He has been at the refuge in Cahors for 5 months, another abandoned hunting dog. Life there does not suit him at all and his health is suffering as a consequence. He needs to get out very soon...He is a lovely dog in need of lots of TLC. He will need extra care because he has some problems with hip dysplasia, but would make a lovely companion in the right home. If you might be able to offer this lovely boy a home, please contact:Refuge d'Englendières, Cahors tel: 05 65 22 66 32.Jouals

We have visited the following kennel (highly recommended by a neighbour) in case we need to kennel our dog. I can only say it looks very good, clean and tidy (the kennels even have heating in winter and music on tap if required!). It is about 20 minutes (20 km) south east of Cahors. They also have a large enclosed run in which they exercise dogs 3 x daily. All vaccinations etc need to have been carried out, along with worm (4 days before stay), flea and tick treatment for a dog to be accepted.Les Pat o CouLa Croix46090 EsclauzelsTel: 05 65 24 75 9706 88 29 52 09Owner: M. Dog experts?
in Pets
We have an English Setter, and would definitely recommend splitting her food between 2 if not 3 smaller meals a day rather than one large one. ES tend to have very delicate digestive systems, and it does not take much to upset the balance. Feeding scraps with her meal could also be causing problems, we have found this out the hard way - for instance even a small piece of cooked chicken can upset our ES's stomach, as can cooked potato - things you would think are fine (and which our other 2 setter crosses have no problems with) in fact are not. She is on a dry 20% protein dog food which we have found suits her (again the other 2 are ok on most dry foods - but anything with corn in seems to upset her stomach). She never messes in the house, but if she has an upset stomach, she soon lets us know she wants to go out. If your dog has eaten something in the evening that does not suit, and as she is still quite young, she may well be unable to hold on until morning!
Good luck.
Horris
Good home here for a setter.
