1. Many thanks for the sympathetic responses and the private message. Yes, it seems that every avenue has been thoroughly investigated and the reason why no effective treatment has worked is because the cause cannot be found, ergo no specific method of cure can be embarked upon. The specialist equipment can definitely see that the optic nerve is very inflamed, but why leaves everyone shrugging their shoulders. Oh well, we soldier on - another visit to the opthalmologist on 25/02 but meanwhile "keep taking the prednisone" which I don't really like, and hope that this eventually does some good. However, if anyone has any other suggestions other than those posted, I should be very, very grateful for help. Thank goodness it is apparently not MS - I am too old!!!! 69! Only time recently that I have had THAT good news!
2. Has anyone else suffered from this horrible malady please? Been hospitalised twice, had every conceivable test, four MRIs, lumbar puncture, cortisone drip and prednisone tablets. Thousands of Euros later [we cancelled our Mutuelle to "hospitalisation only" last September grrrrrrrrrr], there is very little improvement. New spectacles, numerous visits to two respected opthalmologists - am at my proverbial wits end to know what to do next. If anyone has any experience and/or suggestions, I should be so grateful for your input, for which many thanks in advance
3. Rather an unfortunate abbreviation, wouldn't yawll agree? Farfouille de l'APE (association des parents d'élèves)
4. thank you very much for the last three answers which are very much appreciated and give food for thought.
5.
when are you thinking of going ? If it's the weekend after next I suggest staying clear of Millau itself as there is a big athletics competition going on and accommodation will be scarce
Thank you for your answer We are thinking of travelling during the 2/3 week of June
6. Errrrrrrrrrr some B+Bs are now cashing in on what has happened in the UK and charging as much as a small hotel.
7. We are tentatively thinking of driving to the Auvergne, Dordogne, to look at the Millau bridge and then to Albi. Or perhaps even in the other direction - we are free. Does anyone have recommendations for REASONABLY priced B+B as obviously it is not possible to take a gite? We have found that some B+Bs are now cashing in on what has happened in the UK and charging as much as a small hotel. Nothing fancy, but must be clean and quiet. Thanks everyone in advance.

Picato

Thanks to you both. The Haemerrhoids joke made me laugh, which was not good, as it hurts when I laugh! Still the most important factor is positive thinking and looking forward to next week - when we have visitors!

Picato

Having lived in the southern Hemisphere for 17 years, it was probably inevitable that some form of skin cancer would affect us in our later years. Visiting the dermatologist last Monday, he verified that there were in fact areas on my face and left ear which need immediate treatment. He prescribed Picato - be warned. It is absolutely ferocious! My skin has been burning for days and is red and inflamed. My OH remarked justifiably that it is of course a form of chemotherapy, albeit external. In a tiny tube with only 47 grams, the contents of each tube to be applied on three consecutive days. I now look like a cross between a Japanese and a Red Indian - no offence intended - and could only sleep with Ibuprofen. Thankfully from today I am permitted to apply healing cream, which hopefully will reduce the swelling, the burning and the redness. You are warned!
10. Now Sotherby's in the UK has an enviable reputation for [mostly] unblemished and first-class dealings. However, we have a branch [probably a franchise] of Sotherby's Real Estate agency here in Evian-les-Bains. The owner, if that is what he is, already has a reputation for being arrogant and aggressive, but upon asking whether a certain apartment in which we might be interested was situated on a main road, his answer was "calme absolut". Now that to us meant no noise. So what do we find? The railway line passes right in front of the property, with the first commuter train to Geneva passing ca. 05.20. That's "Calme absolut"? Wonder what Sotherby's Head Office in UK would think about that? Also wonder what his idea of noisy would be!!
11.
Does anybody know of a catholic mass in english in the Charente-maritime at Easter please?
As we live in the Haute Savoie, we don't know either, but we are encouraged that in this secular day and age, someone asks. As a matter of fact, we are both Catholic but interestingly there is an Anglican [retired] priest [sorry if this is the wrong description] who holds an Anglican service in the side chapel of our Evian-les-Bains parish church. Some of the year it is well attended too, DG
12. Yes, absolutely wonderful afternoon. However, rather shocked that in your district you have to pay €32! We only had to pay €15 for me. Can't wait until I reach the big 7
13.
I think some French people might say the same about the British ...[:D]
Yes, you do have a point there Norman, but we are talking mega-bucks here. In the France Profonde where villages are sometimes dying, Brits have "come to the rescue". Here it is a different kettle of fish : prices are already exceptionally high because of the proximity to Swizzle which tends to put the prices up on a regular basis. But then we have the nouveau riche coming in and paying whatever sum is asked - i.e. up to and beyond 1,000,000.-- for a three bed apartment, never mind a house!
14. Yesterday we attended the first of hopefully many free annual lunches offered by our local Mairie & Equipe. It was absolutely superb. There were 165 seniors there, all of whom were having an excellent time. The food was exceptional - two separate dishes of fish, one cold the other hot : veal cutlets with champignons, selection of three cheeses and large dessert. All washed down with either Cotes du Rhone or white wine. Proceedings started at 12.00 and ended at 16.40 - wonderful. Could just see the London Borough of Harrow doing something similar!!
15.
I have no love for either of them but what a despicable way for him to behave... [:@] He installs his de-facto wife in an official residence, puts her in an unofficial public post, all of which more or less forces her to curtail her professional commitments so they do not clash with his position, making her financially dependent on his whims, all the while carrying on with a two-bit actress, until he is exposed by a gossip rag and forced to choose... and all because he doesn't have the gumption to end one relationship before starting another... Yuk.
Couldn't agree more. BBC website asked for comments. Ours was "both these women must be blind and deaf, as well as being dumb"
16. Sorry, the reply should have been addressed to this posting
17.

Uebrigens - sehr schöne Ferienwohnungen in Oe!!
We think so! However, we only own one large studio and the current published "official" prices have been set collectively - and they are too high.
Absolutely right! Apartments here, especially new builds, are substantially more than the cost of an existing house. We were offered one such last week at the jaw-dropping price of €770,000. The ironic thing is, we were asked by the estate agent "could we perhaps pay in 'liquid' which might reduce the taxes the builder has to pay". {This is probably highly illegal but just goes to show}. Just yesterday I saw a large apartment in a beautiful Art Deco building [used to be a hotel] - asking price €1,000,000! and that's without double vitrage. It was lovely though, with a splendid view of the lake.
18. But does anyone wish to sell their +130m2 apartment within the boundaries Publier-Neuvecelle for a REASONABLE price please? Being priced out of our local market by Russians and Arabs. Nothing against them per se, but we locals can hardly afford anything in our own neighbourhood nowadays. Went to an agent last week : all 8 apartments in a prestigous new block have been bought off plan by Russians. The original patrician house has not even been knocked down yet!
19. See my posting about charges for an apartment. €1,000,000 !!!! Defies belief but they do get this amount if they are patient enough
20. These exchanges make very interesting reading! Thank you Norman. Today I went to see an apartment in a lovely Art Nouveau building in the centre of Evian. When I made the appointment yesterday I asked twice was the person calling an agent? Twice he said emphatically "no". Guess what? He was an agent. He would not give me the price either so it was a wasted journey when he finally disclosed a cool €1,000,000. If we don't buy it, within six months he guaranteed it would be sold to Russians. He's probably right - more's the pity, as their purchasing power is way beyond what we locals can now afford. Boo Hoo!
21. very comprehensive and understandable reply - thank you. Uebrigens - sehr schöne Ferienwohnungen in Oe!!
22. Not entirely sure that this is the correct section, but hopefully yes it is. When a newly constructed building of apartments is erected, who determines the Taxe Fonciere, the Taxe d'habitation and most essentially the charges? Thinking of downsizing to an apartment and need to have all the facts straight before actually embarking upon this rather major undertaking. Thanks to all knowledgeable contributors.
23. Read yesterday in The Local, newspaper for Anglophones living on the Continent, that Hollande's popularity has sunk to below 15%. Pauvre France!
24. Yes, we feel that any further postings ought perhaps to be under a separate thread. This because members of Carol's family overseas might still be reading what is written. It may prove somewhat distressing for them to see how far off topic her demise has become. Just our personal opinion of course.
25. Oh dear. If her car has now been found, but there is still no news from Carol, it does not bode well for a positive outcome, but let's still hope for the best
