  1. I don't know much about it but there seem to be similar things in UK run by County and District Councils.  Part of the drive to get the young to become involved in the democratic process.
  2. Although not ‘banned’ the HSE would expect occupational users to comply with COSHH (which came in in 1989).  The first requirement for hazardous substances is that employers ‘prevent’ exposure eg use something else. Only where that is not  reasonably practicable should they use it with appropriate control measures.  So I suppose, if alternatives were available, creosote should not have been used.  I guess that could be seen as a ‘ban’.  I think an HSE inspector would only have pushed that if there was extensive use leading to significant exposure.   The more common chemical linked with occupation illness on Welsh farms is organophosphates (in sheep dip).
  3. Creosote is very very carcinogenic and has been banned in the UK for years Actually it was prohibited for 'amateur' use in the UK in 2003 by regulations which implemented the EC Directive.  It can still be used professionally for certain applications.  It is carcinogenic but I'm not sure about the 'very very', but then everything's relative. The HSE said in it's FAQs: The EU Scientific committee considered a study, which showed that there was some evidence of creosote causing skin cancer in animals, and as such concluded that there remained a risk to amateur users of creosote.  This recommendation was based on results from a lifetime’s daily skin contact with creosote, so it is highly unlikely that the occasional contact with creosote that an amateur user might have, will be of any significant concern. This action has been taken as a precaution. The action has been taken because there is a small risk of cancer, identified from repeated daily application of creosote to the skin
  4. In light of uk decision the Agence Française de Sécurité Sanitaire des Produits de Santé is going to review use.
  5. Dave, you seem to have had a fairly negative response, so far! I think a moped would be an option, particularly as you say you'd consider a bicycle if it wasn't so hilly (you could try one with very low gears!).  Of course, Olive would need to be able to carry whatever is going to be carried safely and I'm assuming we're not talking major supermarket excursions here.
  6. However, if I do that, and they unstrap their hats, jump off the horse and hurt themselves, then that is their fault. The courts view of negligence is  just a wee bit different.  Taking reasonable care is more than handing out riding hats!  Do they know how to use them; do they fit; do they understand their importance; did you know they had undone the straps; etc etc. In criminal legislation concerned with occupational health and safety most of the duties include the word 'ensure', which also means doing more than providing safety equipment.
  7. In the uk any enforcement action would be taken by the Health and Safety Executive.  Whilst that could be against an individual, such as a teacher, it would be far more likely to be the employer who was prosecuted. The employer would be expected to assess the risks of this happening and implement controls.  Having to remember to close the window is not a very robust control measure ie it is forseeable that the teacher may forget.  If the risk of someone falling is foreseeable I would expect restrictors on the window to limit how far it can open. If the controls identified by the assessment had been implemented but they had not been followed by the teacher (eg overriding the window restrictor) then action against the teacher may be taken. Does anyone have more details of this case?
  8. As Bob Geldorf said "Butter makes butter milk" when Maggie said what use was butter and refused to send it. Not my normal practice to speak up for  Maggie but - - - on a recent look at the original Band Aid story that little exchange between Bob Geldof and Maggie about the butter fat mountain was shown again.  Geldof said that when they were sitting down to eat afterwoods Thatch tapped him on the shoulder and said she was interested in what he said and perhaps he could contact her office to arrange a meet;  he did and apparently she acted on it (can't remember in what way though).
  9. Bob, I didn't receive my Tax d'habitation for 2003 (the first time mine was due).  I went in to the Tresor last April and let them know.  I received the bill in Dec for 2003 (after I received the 2004 bill). I too paid Fonciere on line.  Was given a code number to confirm.  Received reminder (up 10%) in December!
  10. Not sure how good or what choice but Gitem and Conforama have cookers.
  11. Thank you ads52.  This is exactly the sort of post which makes this forum useful.
  12. Try clearing the browsers Cache. If you don't know how to do this: With Internet Explorer: Go into the Tools, Internet Options ... menu, then on the General tab press the Delete files ... button (in the Temporary Internet files section) and enable the "Delete All Offline content option. Thank you!  It worked and I've had this problem for weeks.
  13. If you use the viamichelin route planner it gives the toll charges.  I think it's about 21 Euro from Calais to Caen.   http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm
  14. Oh   ahh did they used to put it in tea for the army in ww1 think I would sooner my eyes smarted  I think that was bromide!
  15. The 'extra place' is also found in Poland, but it's for the dead.  In fact there are many similarities with Polish Christmas traditions.  Is that an RC influence?
  16. Speak up!  What's Reg done to you?
  17. Jède is a dialect word in Lorraine meaning to harness two bullocks together.  Not sure if it's what you are looking for!
  18. I1, I'm probably being a bit slow but I am not quite sure why your last paragraph 'denigrates the apostrophe', nor why you are concerned it might cause offence. I take your earlier point about commenting on poor grammar but sometimes it can make a post difficult to read.  Surely the purpose of posting is to communicate.  A little bit of puntuation can make it so much easier.
  19. Perhaps do some research before posting misleading replies. Good grief Bob if everyone on here abided by this before expressing their view there wouldn't be many responses.  A bit more tolerance.  It was an opinion.  Comment if you disagree but why all the attitude?
  20. A note of caution but it can interact with warfarin and increase risk of haemorrhages.  Not a problem for many, but often elderly who are prescribed warfarin have problems with cystitis.
  21. O K Dick, so I'm a sad pedant.  But in your calculation I think you assumed time to boil was proportional to current?  Shouldn't it be power? (which is V2) In which case it would take nearly 10 seconds longer to boil!!!
  22. As an aside Jeremy Clarkson penned a new name for a french person in yesterdays Sunday Times to quote "cheese eating surrender monkeys" so next time a nice french person gets up your nose you know what to say.   So Jezzer now gets his copy by plagiarising Homer?
  23. Nah, it must be the low quality nuclear power they have in France.
  24. Some years ago someone posted a really good link to a US site about the Fosse Septique but  I seem to have lost it.  I did find this University of Montana site which is ok but not  a patch on the other. The link is: http://www.montana.edu/wwwpb/pubs/mt9401.html It has this chart on emptying frequency (the figures in the body of the table are years).  Obviously it depends on how much crap goes in so those with a Maison Secondaire need to work out their annual crap equivalent! Tank size*Household Size (number of people)(Gals)1234565005.82.61.31.00.70.47509.14.22.61.81.31.090011.05.23.32.31.71.3100012.45.93.72.62.01.3125015.67.54.83.42.62.0150018.99.15.94.23.32.6175022.110.76.95.03.93.1200025.412.48.05.94.53.7225028.614.09.16.75.24.2250031.915.610.27.55.94.8 The site I can't now find seemed to dispel many myths (if it was true) eg it's not necessary to keep feeding in the activator.
