1. Thanks for the reply, I have already gone down the dongle route [:(] I'm affaid it was worse than useless! Yes I have a newish laptop with built in modem and a phone socket, but are French phone sockets the same as our in UK? I need to know which connector I need to conect my laptop to the phone socket, I have several here in UK but I'm sure they wouldn't fit. If I choose FT dial-up where do I get the disc or the info from to use it. I shall be going into the nearest Orange shop on Monday and I need to know what I am asking for (in French) [:$] What will the cable/contector be called? Oh what fun! (not)
2. I was going to have the whole package of phone and broadband/ADSL on my residence secondaire line but found out that I can only turn the phone line off and on but not both, so I have decided to try dial-up, but I don't have a clue what I need or how to go about it after I get the line in. I will be taking a UK laptop, what other equipment do I need to buy and who would be the easiest ISP to go with, Orange/FT? if I go with FT will it all go on one bill? which is easier for me. I will print off the advice given in the sticky above before I leave UK so I can refer to it. Is it possible that the engineer will set it up for me as he would have done if I had gone with the ADSL? I leave for France today at midnight, so sorry in advance if I don't reply after that time. Thank You
3.
It all depends exactly what you have signed up for. It would be a lot easier to advise you if you let us know what the details of the order are. If you have ordered a basic ligne résidence secondaire, it should be 16 euros per month and you can suspend it . There are some small fees for suspension and restarting. If you have also ordered the 'découverte' broadband service, it is 21 euros per month. You cannot suspend it but you have to cancel it completely and then restart it again when you want. This seems to be the general current 'policy'. But....the reason there is such a lack of clarity about this is that Orange are not consistent. It seems to depend on which Orange sales person you talk to. They do not want you to cancel (salespeople on commission remember) so there is always the chance that they will tell you fibs if they are less than honest even if something is technically possible. Some Orange staff will say that you can migrate the service to 'accés libre' and then restart it again later. You can use any compatible modem with this service. Orange often offer a cheap ADSL modem (for sale, not rental) which may be the 9 euro bit... This will not be wifi capable. If you want wifi then you will have to get another modem/router to use. All of this should be clear in your order. Did you not receive any confirmation from Orange? Danny
Thank you Danny I have only made the first steps to get the line in: phoned helpline and they have made an appointment for 9th April for the engineer to come out and a promise that the line will be erected and working about 3/4 days later. I also asked about the ADSL and was given the info and prices as I stated above + they gave me my number. I haven't received any email confirmation of a contract (but it's possible a letter might have been sent to the property) so not sure if I'm actually signed up to anything as yet! no bank details or money changed hands yet
4. I already have a 3G 'Lets go' dongle at €8 per month  and I'm about to cancel it, it was not that good, a bit expensive and contectivity was patchy and weak at times. Last trip over couldn't get it conected at all so it has to go.
5.
Yes you can buy your own Livebox, it cost's about €60 IIRC, so roughly a 20 month break even point. Bear in mind though that lightning damage is very common in France and after a storm you'll often see a queue of people outside the Orange shop the next day looking for a free replacement whereas it'll be another €60 if you have to buy it yourself. If you haven't signed up for the VoIP telephone service then you don't actually need a Livebox and can buy just about any other router which takes your fancy.
Thanks, I know only to well about the lightning damage , been there had that [6] I read on another thread that someone ordered a new line (Ligne Résidence Secoundaire) + broadband and they commented that they where under the impression that the broadband could be switched off the same as the line (I was also left with this impression after ordering it) and in reality they were charge for the bb even when the line was suspended. Can anyone tell me which is the case and if it is possible to suspend the bb also? €21 p/m is going to be unviable if I am unable to suspend it, so what is the alternative? Bas débit, Acces libre with booster, be a better option? Slower but better on the pocket? I think I will end up phoning the help line again but I would appreciate as much info before I call them. Thank you.
6.
The normal rental for the Livebox is €3, can't really imagine what €9 might be for. Have you gone for the TV decoder too because there is a one off €49 charge for that so is it possible you misheard ?
Definately understood €9, no just the basic everything, but @ €9 I thought it might just be a nominal price (BT Home Hub is free) Whats the alternative? buy from somewhere else? where? how much? [8-)]
7.   I've ordered a new phone line to be installed via the Orange English speaking helpline and although I have understood how it will go, after ending the conversation I realised I needed a little more info, so maybe someone here can help instead of me phoning them again. They said the modem will be €9, is that a one-off payment or a monthly fee? if a one-off that's OK but if monthly is there an alternative eg. buy one outright? Nothing was said about the actual phone, do I just buy one from say the Orange shop or Leclerc before the engineer comes? In the installation do they expect the house to already have the internal phone wiring or do they drill though a convenient place and put the socket on the wall? Thank you
8.
But for the grace of god and the exercise of good sense that could have been my tryst too.
Was that: being on trail for killing the wife or finding a dead arab in your bed or eloping with the chaufer or fancying the housemaid or.........................? [;-)]
9. Likewise, I pop in for a coffee and a chat once in a while, catch up on things. Merry Christmas everyone [kiss]
10. You must be joking[:-))]miss Downton abbey, I've turn down going out with freinds to watch it, can't wait, I hope she gets her man!
11. Have you seen the latest [:D] http://the-hobbit-movie.com/2011/12/24/the-hobbit-production-video-5/ I'm definately going to do the 'tour' when they open it up after filming. GG when did you do the LoR's tour? was it worth the trip out?
12.
Here's the trailer for The Hobbit if you haven't seen it yet :     http://blog.syracuse.com/entertainment/2011/12/the_hobbit_movie_trailer_unexpected_journey_lord_of_the_rings.html
Love it love it love it, Can't wait, I made your link live [B]
13.
Can anyone tell me please how to get Windows 7/Google Chrome to recognise this Forum properly? I can't find a compatibility button to use as I had with 'normal' Google. Posting comes up with a box to write in and no smileys (!) and when I use the quote button I get all the gobbledegook instead of the proper box.
I am using W7 and Google Chrome, but I have an extention which enables sites like this to be shown as IE does, not sure how I got it now [:$] but this is what I found in the the 'options' when I click on the spanner on the top right os my address bar, then click on 'Extensions' I see this added: IE Tab Classic0.9.8 Internet Explorer inside Chrome OptionsVisit website Maybe you could work it out from that [blink] PS You might find it better here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/miedgcmlgpmdagojnnbemlkgidepfjfi Also you might have to copy /paste onto a new google tab.
14.
What would you do, well you'd get it done anyway. When in France you'd call at your Orange/FT office and keep banging on and never be put off your quest until someone helps you. Sometimes easier than others, but things always get done. It is the same with everything, everything gets done even without the internet.
I like doing things the easy way, and asking people in the know is the easiest way. Over the years I have spent hours helping out on queries if I felt I have something to add or offer my advice, it's so nice that I can also come here when I have a querie and receive the same helpful advice [:)]
15. Well how easy was that! [:D] Well the first part anyway. I used the phone number I got from the sticky post at the start of this section of the forum as directed by Quillan and got everything started and an appointment for the line in April, they offered Residence Secondaire as my best option and without me asking [:D] This forum is a gem and I don't know what I would do without it sometimes Thank you everyone, [kiss]
16. No it's not just you, I tried useing it this evening and got the same results[8-)]
17. Ok, I know this site I have an Orange mobile internet dongle and use that site for my account. Thanks I have just found out a few things but I'm still unsure how to go about it. I now know that linge residence secondaire still exists and how much the tariffs are. I don't know how to actually order it and find out if I'm eligible for it, I really need to talk to someone in English about it, as I found out in my local Orange shop that they don't really do English, I only just managed to convey what I wanted when I got my dongle! Does the English speaking help line still operate? and if so is still this their number: 0800364775 ? if so I could try and call them tomorrow.
18. I know this has probably been done to death on here but I have tried to use the search and searched this catagory and can't find any up to date info on what I need to do to get a new land line/internet in my house, the telegraph pole is on the opposite side of the road aprox, 10-12m away. Can some tell me: Whom do I approach? FT English line (or is that now defunct)? Aprox, cost? Aprox time line for the installation? Is the Residence secondaire still availble for new clients? Or could someone point me in the right direction to find out online. Thank you
19. Thanks for that info. I have just bought a Panasonic with built-in Freesat (I had free view from Sky before that) Will it automatically include them when they go live or will I have to tune them in?

22.
I am sure you will all be pleased but this is my final post. I have noticed that there are quite e few people who have posted a large amount of comments over the last few years. They amount to between 3 to 5 posts per day. I would suggest that instead of wasting their time posting on stupid forums they enjoy their time more productively. My own posting was a wind up, you fell for it.
Yep that's what I thought 'Troll' But if your life is so dull you had to wind up a few people on a internet forum then you must be sadder than I first thought of you.[kiss]
23. I think it is irrelevant where the farmer lives, he is part of the program for several reasons; The family are ex pats, they are making a living in France, they are bringing 'something British' to France and making a success of it, they are providing many other Brits (and French) a 'product' that is unique and obviously a good demand for and many of his customers live in Dordogne. The program has already said where the Hicks family farm is, so nothing is being misrepresented. I am enjoying the program, it's not top of my must see list, but as I love the cinematography and the scenery, it's worth the not so good bits.
