1. Passing the time today in Limoges I realised there were approximately four times as many Lingerie Shops as there were Estate Agents. Ratios in Kingston are the other way round. I think the French have got their priorities right. They also had book and CD shops which were not part of huge chains. Anton Redman ( waiting for the flak)
2. The price you quoted does not look out of line with UK budget prices for a similar specification. I ( Anton not Isabel) am simply 2.0 diopter both lenses with a correction for asymetry so small I prefer to do without it. Isabel's in contrast are expensive even with the cheapest frames. My late mothers were a very expensive prescription to manufacture. My view on insurance is I need it for major costs for instance I cause an accident which destroys two Ferraris or the house burns down. I do not want to pay for administration on policies which simply give me my own money back. Dental costs, extended warrenty on new computer etc. Anton Redman " My glasses are progressif, anti reflet, anti rayure, photochromatic. All theses things these days are simply about my comfort really. Bad enough having to wear specs without them not being comfortable. "
3. Last time I read it up car was limited to the department in which it was registered and the adjacent departments. If registered in 87 for instance you can go to 16. You are also allowed to drive the car to organised rallys in other departments provided the car is pre registered with the car club. I believe this will cease when the new one registration for life rules are introduced. Anton Redman ( too busy to sort out which I cannot register in my own name with new software)
4. If your property is in a village or town there should be an inspection point which is roughly 30 cm in diametre and capped by a cast iron cover. Once you have found that you shopuld be able to work backwards toward the house. Anton Redman
5. The only domestic appliance which we have found significantly cheaper in UK over the last four years are Dyson Washing Machines. You need to check super/hyper markets for best prices. By the time you have changed the plug and risked draging it back to UK if it breaks down even a 10 % saving becomes small beer.
6. Last Friday Night we has a severe thunder storm. Burnt out answer/expensive phone but did no damage no damage to cheap French phone. Booted the PC on Saturday and was told new USB device detected (twice). HP 1315 would neither print or delete. MS Office said it needed a to be reinstalled and neither Word nor Excell would load. Solution was : 1. User RegRecover to rebuild registry to point where you could manually delete HP software and printer drivers. 2. Re install USB printer from scrath. 3. Spend Euros 15 on new modem and install. We have since spent more on parafoudre protection than the device are worth. I have not been so frustrated with a computer since ACT supplied a PC with one double sided and and one single sided floppy drive and did not tell me IBM PC DOS said 111 files constituted a full drive despite the drive being 60% free. PC World sold me an upgrade,in December 2001 for a new PC from MSWorks to MS Windows which required Wordstar, Word Perfect or Supercalc to be present before the upgrade would instal. ( found a 15 year old copy of Wordstar to install fist) CPM and Pascal list destination then source for their copy commands but MS DOS does it the other way round. None of the internal checks on the modem or printer were of any help. We nay buy a cheap and chearful second hand laptop in UK onnnext visit so we can check the line for modem use before buying a new card. Would be interested to hear of other people's experiences following lightenign damage Anton Redman not an anagram of Isabel Maidment
7.
RDKR and Teamup. I think you both are missing my point. I am defending the Motor Trade profession. I could fill a book as thick as "War & Peace" with antidotes from the other side. Also, it neve...
It is not too bad if you know what the rules are. Some years ago my father was trying to buy a Ford Cortina Estate, fully loaded. Salesman tried to switch sell to Ford Corsair Estate (same running gear, heavier body, worse CD and 20% more expensive) . We ended up with a Cortina GT estate (not listed but would run with a 404) . I taught me that you start from what they want to sell not what you want to buy and alsways confince them they have made you spend more moneynthan you wanted to The new Mini is a way for BMW to sell an expensive front wheel drove hatch back without corrupting their brand image.
8. Thanks everybody will follow up on the ideas. House is still damp from paster drying etc so will try a dehumidifier for a few weeks. Compared to anytime during the last 35 years of my life I am totally unstressed so am fairly confident that is not the cause. Will try further South when we take the house compleation holiday regards Anton Redman
9. Any body any advice on where in France the climate is relatively good for rheumatism? Where we are in the Haute Vienne is as you would expect from how green everywhere is very bad news for rheumatism. Much to my amazement Isabel and I improved no end during a week back in London. Regards Anton Redman
10. Link as below. One pair (two wire) is cheapest. If I was threading through walls etc I would use a minimum of two pair. I used full (10 ?) wire for our house to future proof be ready for full broadband roll out in 2005 years. If you are after 30 metres in may be cheaper to buy a 50 metre drum. You can price compare on Castorama site. Anton Redman ( still adjusting to new ID) http://www.castorama.fr/boutique/products/products.jhtml?elementId=CastoEL0114&navAction=push&navCount=0
11. No co co n u t. No stopcock on the Screwfix plumbing forum and try looking for anywhere in Middlesex on one of the US sites censors. Anton Redman - beginning to enjoy new soubrouchet.
12. Radio 4 longwave can work perfectly on a car ariel however you normally need to be on a high ridge to get a good signal. A dish, cheap digital reciever very cheap TV and little hard work will also allow 1,2,3 and 5 plus Classic FM and a lot of other channels. but what do I know about technology with a login like this : Anton Redman
13. 2nd hand car prices seem rational to me in France. They decline in a farly flat line over 12 to 15 years. The UK 2nd had car market is dominated by large manufacturers selling to the company car and leased car market. I have only ever scraped cars because the body work has rusted out or been damaged in an accident. The Peugeot 306 HDI I run has 185,000 kilometres on it and will be 4 years old in November. 25 years ago I ran a Datsun 1600SSS in Kenya and an MG 1300 in the UK both with over 200,000 kilometres on them. The MG needed a new clutch at 180,000 ks. Both would run at 130 kph for hours on end, both would start on the button after two months sat in an airport car park. Anton Redman ( PS Isabel used to run a Holden Toranna with similar mileage )
14. Running ME amd loath to pay for a Microsoft upgrade only problems : Spellchecker will not work Some reluctance to load second/susequnt pages of replies Lost loggin on software change and as I was travelling at the time hade one attempt at recovering before settiling for gender realignment as below. Every time I try and start as "A_Redman" "Anton Redman" etc am told loggin exists but password does not match. Anton Redman (login explanation is getting tedious)
15.
I need to change several thousand pounds into cash euros (ie, not to my bank account). Nothing illegal is proposed , I just want to haggle over some bits and pieces at vide greniers, brocantes, etc ...
Have you tried requesting a meating with your councillor at the bank and explaing just how difficult their rules are making your life. For the last 9 years we have turned up at our branch at the beginning of visits, shown our passports if we don't recognise the bank staff/vice versa asked for a statement of the last 10 days transactions and with drawn say 2,000 euros then and there. The two recent changes are European money laundering regs which require you to provide a motive/reason for remitance of over 10,000 Euros and our bank only has a cashier between 9 am and noon. The debit card/pin rules have very iritating rules which is why we have been Anton Redman (login explanation is getting tedious)
