1. Took me 12 months to get plumbing work done in 27. I will keep in touch as we are hoping to get new windows and shutters next year. Paul
2.
After my first trip with Speedferries I thought some feedback might be useful for those yet to try them. I should say first of all that my normal mode of travel is with Le Shuttle, with which any comp...
You took the words out of my mouth
3. HI There are a lot of chemical companies in and around Le Havre. I do not know the names of them but there must be a local industry guide / refrence book/ web site even. Great for access back to the UK, and very close to some special parts of Normandy. Good luck   Paul
4. I am going to a Eurovision Party. We do not watch the songs just wait for the voting. We run bets on who gives who what votes irrespective of the song. As usual the UK will give Ireland a high mark and recveive nothing or a low one in return. But the best comes from the Eastern Countries where you can put your Maison Secondaire on the outcome.
5. Hang on to your house. even in France the laws of supply and demand will mean a surge in property prices with that sort of growth.
6. WE could make the island big enough to assist the police with operation"Stack". This would obviously be a justified expense as our French cousins go on strike so much it would free up the motorways and Dover/Folkstone.
7.
Can the island be big enough for a nice tree lined picnic area?
I am so glad you are getting into the spirit of this project. Perhaps we should start a campaign to ensure that the bridge gains importance by suggesting the island is also used by the European Parliament as a neutral venue. Lottery funding could be used instead of wasting it on underachieving athletes etc. Also bringing back duty free to assist in subsidising the cost of running the bridge. Last posting from me, I just smelt the coffee.   Paul
8. Yes but, Imagine a half way island built for customs, service area with coffee and croisant. Build it high enough for tankers to pass under, and wide enough for laybys.
9. Just imagine you were travelling to France. You got in your car and drove to the coast somewhere near Dover. No ticket, no booking, no time to be there,(not the at least half an hour but no more than 2 hours before that you get from Eurotunnel). You pull up at the toll box and pay your toll. Then you drive over the bridge and your there. Easy. One day we look back and wonder why it took so long. Paul
10. Are there any experts on gas regulators out there. I have a gas fire which after working for 20 mins with a new gas bottle(elfi) and new regulator, will not now work. I suspect the regulator is not allowing enough gas out. Does this sound possible? The regulator is one of those that fits directly on top of the bottle. Can I use any regulator or must I stick with Elfi? Sorry if this sounds all a bit basic but in my 49 years I have never had bottled gas before Paul
11.
Quite right Mrs O but of course it still has to be paid, and still costs 116E. I believe those who say on the tax forms that they do not have a TV can also expect a visit from somebody who will be ch...
Does this mean that the assumption is now that eveyone has a TV unless you notify the authorities? I assume that in future when you buy a house the Notaire will have to ask the question. This letter we all received must just be a once only. Paul
12. Sorry to read your story. How are you marketing your house? I had a friend who had his house on the market for over a year with a local agent in France with no luck. He then contacted one of the agents in England who specialise in French property and sold it within a month. I think it was La Residence, but anyway I think any spreading of the net may catch more fish. Perhaps another idea might be to try to find a long term tenant, which would enable you to be a tenant in Spain to ensure that is exactly what you want. You say you have a gite that gives you some income, maybe if you could sell that as a holiday home, use the money to improve your own house, i.e. central heating, and make it more desirable to a buyer. I sometimes think advertising property in Paris might be a good idea to attract the 2nd home buyers looking for a weekend bolt hole. I hope things get better soon Paul
13. Anyone know a good plumber in 27 ? Its only a sink swap but its not been easy getting someone to turn up on the agreed day   Paul
14. So how do you move from junior to member etc etc.?
15.
When I was considering what to do with my ill gotten gains (I can't say it was "hard earned money" as most of it was "call out payments" and the amount of work was usually minuscule - dragging myself ...
John Thats twice I agree with your logic in one day!!!   Paul
16.
I think there are two separate issues here. One is tax on any income that a second home might earn, the other is an extra tax on the property itself. I have no issue with tax on the income, but I am n...
John your logic is great , but when did logic play a part in tax and politics? Paul
17. Has anyone heard about a proposal to introduce a tax on 2nd homes in France?
18. Do you know what the combined charges are? Paul
19.
Sorry dont have connection with the commuters group but interesting to see that the new administration have got rid of another travelling scheme. I hope it doesnt inconvenience you too drastically. Ap...
Sounds like they are having problems with industrial relations at Eurotunnel France. My experience is that when things go wrong in that area, our French cousins do find reasons to stick to rules like H&S, to make some sort of point. My favourite irritant is when you arrive at French passport control. There are 95-99% of cars with right hand drive, guess which side of the booth the official sits? OK when you have someone with you, but when your on your own its a pain. Still thats what makes us luv them, we are different, and long may it continue.
20.
"When you say free calls, surely you still pay the modem connection charge for either dial up or broadband? " Yes and that's all you pay if you are phoning someone on their computer. If you phone a...
Thanks It sounds a better idea than having your computer on all the time. I will give it a try Paul
