  1. LAST EDITED ON 19-Aug-04 AT 11:38 AM (BST) I haven't had to do it for a couple of years, but I'm pretty sure it hasn't change (I hire frequently and the people I use are pretty chatty about legal changes) and although a tacho was fitted to the 7 1/2 tonner, I didn't have to use it and my standard driving licence was sufficient. I'd go with the hire company advice
  2. I wonder how easy it is to fit a tacho type device to a car. I drive an oil burner and am never in a hurry to get anywhere, so it would be nice to prove my inoccence should the worst occur.
  3. For all of you dreading getting through the junction on the way to/from Portsmouth, you'll be pleased to hear that the northbound carriageway has been open since yesterday and southbound will be open within 48 hours. Oh happy days !!
  4. LAST EDITED ON 12-Aug-04 AT 02:46 PM (BST) Have a word with the person ahead of you at the pumps. I've used my card a couple of times (once for a Brit and once for a young French couple) who didn't have a card and I've fueled them 20 worth in exchange for hard cash. It's probably not worth the hassle of a French account now, unless you're going to make use of it.
  5. Florence, Try "Moreau Jean Quincaillerie" in Magnac Laval, it's right on your doorstep. It's the hardware store of legend, which has absolutely everything hidden away in a rabbit warren of a store and will provide one nail, if that's all you need. They fitted our kitchen superbly and ,although they may not have the style you want, will know someone who has. Don't know much about curtains, but would hope they might surface at the market or try the market at Les Herolles (but wait until the summer rsuh has subsided, I suspect it's a nightmare)
  6. Try any of the brocantes, they're generally bursting at the seams with old cookers. Don't know where you are but Troc De L'ile in Limoges has plenty and they're a chain with locations all over France
  7. This might help http://www.traveler-service.de/english/download.htm
  8. Anything interesting happening this weekend ? I'm spending a couple of days in the pas de Calais and suspect there must be some events on.
  9. Don't do it, is the easy answer. Re-arrange the dates to suit you, so that you can be sure the two dates don't clash and that you have the money where you need it, when you need it. You'll have enough to do as it is, without engineering problems. You can dictate the calendar of events.
  10. I had the same when we were filling in a burglary report. Only they wanted to know about my mother. Died 15 years ago in Ireland. And surprise, surprise it didn't lead to a conviction. Maybe they were looking for help from the other side.
  11. An alternative tried by many is to buy a van in the UK and either keep it for your own use once in France, or sell it on.
  12. LAST EDITED ON 21-Jul-04 AT 07:41 AM (BST) Know the place you mean, but can't help with details. However..... If you're looking for white goods or TVs, there's a place opposite Gamm Vert in the Z.I. Nord in Limoges that does end of line, one off stuff etc. at very, very good prices. worth a look if you need something and it's not sale time.
  13. Check the Avis.fr site. There's a tie-up between SNCF and Avis and you can pick up a car at most stations. Calais-Frethun is listed on the site as a booking point
  14. Isn't it true, you can never find it when you need it. I need the short cuts for accented letters and my brain has died. Searched for 'keys' 'french' and 'character' in this forum and came up with zilch. Anyone got the inbfo readily to hand Thanks in anticipation
  15. Just as importantly, what is it going to cost you when you get to the UK, assuming you want to travel into London. It's much cheaper to travel to central London from Gatwick than from Stanstead. Although Limoge is my doorstep airport in France, I never use it, because of the massive additional cost of getting to stanstead. Maybe when it's rebuilt, other airlines will start using it. (I know AF fly via CDG)
  16. LAST EDITED ON 30-Jun-04 AT 09:12 AM (BST) Have you tried re-booting the box ?. 10 minutes used to be the standard cure on my box, though I've not plugged it in for over a year and software changes may have been made.
  17. We paid local professionals to supply and install our kitchen. TVA was levied at 5.5%, instead of the 19.6% we'd have paid on the components if we'd installed it ourselves. That went a long way to covering the cost of the installation. Plus, they did a far better job than I ever could, they pointed us in the right direction for other artisans we needed, who in turn were top notch and I'm sure we scored brownie points for using a local business.
  18. Keep an eye on www.ferrysale.com for Newhaven to Dieppe. I do Newbury to Newhaven in a touch over 2 hours and at 29 each way for car and passengers and a 2 hour crossing. However, in line with another thread, I try to book at short notice with an eye on the weather. Touch wood, it's been a mild pond crossing each time this year.

I've no personal interest in this, but I saw a van near Heathrow this morning and thought the address on the side might be of use. www.ladyhaye.co.uk
  20. Just checked. It's up and running
  21. Now what will we call this one?? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3790127.stm
  22. Having endured a 220 mile round trip to Stansted last weekend, I thought I'd enquire of Flybe whether they were going to have another bash at this route. The final sentence of the reply seems quite emphatic. "It is not expected that this will be reintroduced" Shame really. I hope somebody is going to make use of the new building at Limoges (though I can't see what was wrong with the old one)
  23. Ditto I'm the driver, wife's the partially sighted non driver. She used Limoges Taxi (05 55 38 38 38) on Sunday, from the airport. About 80 to Rancon area, on the meter. I booked the taxi a couple of days in advance and they were there to meet her. She's off to town this morning on a pre-booked taxi, return trip to Magnac Laval. Just over 20 for a return trip, 10 km each way. Interestingly, has to pay by cheque, won't take cash. So, no problem
